Yeah it does make sense. The M chips are in reality nothing more than beefed up A chips. Annual releases are the natural cycle. You're just not used to annual Mac updates because Apple was beholden to Intel. Apple have also recently been hamstrung by supply constraints, and also no doubt been overloaded with all the new design work in moving to Apple Silicon. Sooner or later that will iron out, and I presume annual M chip and Mac updates will become as normal as annual A chip and iPhone updates.
I agree with the annual thing.
But this year it looks like that it’s 2 chips within 9 months.
Very strange! Probably M2 wasn’t selling so good…🤔

M2 MBA's where a huge evolution over M1 MBA's, due to the body redesign. And the 15" M2 MBA only just came out. And having a base M3 chip come out that is in some ways faster than the M2 Pro isn't a good look for those who are buying the expensive Pro machines. So it would actually make sense to put out the higher end chips first, especially if there are production bottle necks.
Well said. Also users and even many visitors here didn’t understand Pro chip are better than basic ones, example M1 Pro is superior to M2. But as you can read in comments when Apple release new base chip, there is a lot of confusion. Releasing Pro chip before makes things clear.

I think it's also that M2 Pro/Max was supposed to be released last fall, but "supply chain issues" delayed the release until January. The plan was a yearly release. Sure, they don't "need" a MacBook Pro update every year, but doing so boosts sales, so there's no reason for them not to do it.

Valid point.

Nevertheless - New stuff is always good - hopefully this is a bigger leap ahead and sets up for some monsters being released in the next iterations.
Looking forward to it.

So, much like the meteorologists or stock pickers, good performance is trying to be right enough times to seem to have some kind of special ability.
Here I will point out that short-term models (less than 72 hours) has gotten pretty good for weather forecasting. This is due in no small part because satellites track parameters of the lower and upper atmosphere quite well.

Much better than Kuo or Gurman does with Apple. Although they do ok within .... 24 hours .... or so of an event.

Can I have mine in the colour lavender?

I meant those that didn't buy it because its slow. Here is what I meant:

With Apple Silicon you have GPU and CPU in one package and can't really do anything about it.
3D artists or people who need raytracing etc. for complex scenes or development don't get the same results as they do from Nvidia etc. so they don't buy AS because for them its still slow.

My hopes are that the M3 will solve 'most' of the issues and 3D artist (and others) who rely on this stuff will be able to jump on the AS train.

Thats what I meant. For some tasks M1 and M2 is just not there yet but M3 should hopefully solve it. We shall see on monday what they bring to the table and what the roadmap will look like.

I'm not sure if I'd even say "a lot of people" own an M2 Ultra device so I feel confident saying that "a lot of people" haven't said they find it slow. What's your source?

The newer Intel and specially AMD chips became close or even outperformed the M2 chips (even if the x86 ones are energy-killers).

Makes sense that Apple would refresh their lineup with newer chips, even if it's the only change.

Remember that this is the 'More Poweful Chip & Benchmark Score' game. And Christmas is the finish grilled flag for the year.
I was for long time thinking why Apple is putting its high tech in low cost products first. It can make sense from production point of view but from marketing or financial. It seems that production and design of M chips has matured enough that they can go Pro first. Intel/NVidian performance is good so Apple needs to move forward faster.

IMO Apple has no need to chase Snapdragon performance because most Apple buyers could care less. Long term of course, how well Apple competes in the chip wars matters. But Qualcomm's PR announcements do not make Apple need to chase Snapdragon.
For now that’s true, but people said that about PowerPC’s performance slipping against Intel’s too

Does this exist?

1) a site I could glance at as a "second screen" during the keynote where I can see various smart people's immediate reactions to what's being presented.

2) NOT a site that only repeats what I just saw on my big screen (via Apple TV).

3) NOT the Apple keynote channel on Discord. I've tried that on the past 2 keynotes. There was just too much raunch and swearing mixed in with some truly interesting insights and comments. I stopped watching it both times.

compared to the Macbook Pro 13 with a longer battery life and Touchbar which shortens common workflows w/BTT . And *subjectively* more comfortable carrying shape vs the 'slab' MBA M2 For my uses MBP 13 wins and MBA was not 'superior' enough to buy and definitely not superior enough to switch to! Weight difference unnoticeable, never use Facetime, BT still connects to everything I own. Coupla extra hours battery life...noice.
Well, Apple finally got rid of it today. I think that was a very good decision.

Long live the new Pro (and Air).

I just got my MacBook Pro 14" 2 weeks ago. Did I just buy at the worst possible time?

I remember you writing this and wanted to tell you that if you live near an Apple store they will more than likely let you return it even if you are past your return date. Generally, they are pretty kind about purchasing something as expensive as their laptops and allowing them to be returned even if they are past the two week return point as long as its not a crazy long time.

The problem with this is "smart people" is subjective. To a lot of people, that'd mean someone who thinks like them.

At what price (would you pay for it)? See Pro Monitor for some of those specs and then add whatever you think Apple would charge to build in a whole Mac and give you a keyboard and mouse. Add what you think they'd want to get that refresh rate up to 120hz. And don't forget the $1,000 monitor stand for that one.

I do think an iMac "bigger" will come soon- maybe not next week but somewhere in the next 500 days. I suspect it will be branded PRO, offering PRO & MAX chips, 30-32" screen and probably priced like the former iMac Pro was priced... which is a LOT more than the 27" iMac many of us fondly recall. If that's a dream, stand by and you'll probably get much of your wish... if you want to cough up the bigger bucks for it.
I would pay 3-4k grands easily, they don't need to add the add the XDR pro display technology, a cheaper 218 dpi display is enough 😅

Yeah, I called Apple and they accepted to do a return.
