Keep in mind though, this years M2 Pro and Max MacBook Pro's were originally intended to be launched in September or October of 2022, but due to the issues that were happening in China at the time, they had actually cut it out of the launch event. Which ultimately pushed it to January. The M3 launches is Apple is just recalibrating the launch schedules. Which also means, things are back on track. M4 is coming fall of 2024.

Another possibility is that Apple originally planned to hold off the introduction until January, but that sales in the last month are unexpectedly down so much that they've moved the date up at the last minute.

Remember, the M2 MBPs were supposed to release near the end of 2022, but were delayed a few months. This may be Apple just deciding to stick with the original timeframe for the M3s regardless of the M2's dropping the same year.

Hoping they discontinue the 13" Pro with Touch Bar. That Mac shouldn't exist anymore. The 13/15" Air and the 14/16" Pro address all the possible use cases.
As much we all dislike this "fake" MacBook Pro, it has its place. If Apple removes the Touch Bar while adding MagSafe and M2/M3 Pro option (for multiple external displays), it could be compelling for many.

Damn, I just bought an M2 Max a couple weeks ago because I didn’t expect they’d be updating it in less than a year. What’s the best options here? I also already traded in my original laptop, so I can’t even go back to that temporarily.
Well, they say the best MacBook to buy is the one that’s currently available.

Apple's upcoming "Scary Fast" event will focus on the M3 series MacBook Pro models, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Kuo's wording suggests that he is expecting multiple M3 chips rather than just a single M3 chip, hinting at the possibility of M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips.

If Apple does release M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips at once, we can expect to see the new chips introduced in 13-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

Kuo says that he previously predicted that Apple would not likely introduce new MacBook Pro models in 2023 because of "limited 4Q 23 shipments," and if new MacBook Pros do come out in November or December, the tight supply will last until the first quarter of 2024.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also says that Apple has been testing M3 Max and M3 Pro MacBook Pro models, suggesting that these machines are going to be refreshed. Gurman just last week claimed that Apple would not update the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips until early 2024, so it seems that his predictions have since changed.

That Kuo and Gurman are both now suggesting that we'll see 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models at Apple's October event comes as a surprise because much of their prior information pointed toward a 2024 refresh for these devices.

Gurman maintains that Apple will not refresh the MacBook Air models, Mac mini, Mac Studio, or Mac Pro at this time, which leaves the iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro, and 16-inch MacBook Pro for the October event. As Gurman has previously pointed out, these are the machines that are facing extended shipping times in Apple's online store.

Hopefully he is right this time 🤔😁

I buy a base Mini M2 around 5 months ago as test to know how I can do with (my first silicon) and it's amazing! now I want the Studio, so I'll wait for the Studio M3 to long term.

Interesting. It almost seems like Apple is desperate to move on from M2. And yet they're releasing the Vision Pro with M2. I guess because M2 didn't sell well, so they have a bunch of leftover chips. One leaker predicted they might come out with an Apple TV with M2. If they do update MBPs at this event, that means there will be two different "2023 MacBook Pro" releases, which is confusing.

I think MaxTech might be correct that the iMac gets M2/M2 Pro and not M3. Regular M3 will be released after M3 Pro/Max next year with new MacBook Air models.

Not a chance - They will release the M3 but not the M3 Max which the MBP needs - they just updated the MBP in February - there's no way they make it obsolete that fast - Spring 2024 at the earliest for that

M3 release might have been pushed hard by Apple due to surprisingly low Mac sales this year (ie. changes from M1 not enough to push people still on Intel to switch)
timing is important - the holiday season is the highest selling one, and if iPhone 15 sales were also not that great then they might want to try to salvage the fiscal quarter by going guns blazing with Macs.

this could be true. Explains why all of this is super last minute (new Mac announcements weren't even predicted until yesterday).

They could update the production model to M3. In fact that would seem likely. The developer version only used M2 because that was the only available option.
