Agree with everyone. Not enough differentiation between Air and Pro even before this last update to be hoenest. A14 is plenty for what is done on an IPad.

Quad speakers/Pro motion /LiDAR is not enough.

They’ll likely add M2 and upgrade the cameras lol

So the screen doesn't completely cover the cable hole on the stand? What is the purpose of that?
That photo is taken from about 6 inches above the desk. You are not going to see the screen unless you kneel to use your computer. The stand is almost the same as the iMac 27" stand. The hole is there to reduce the amount of aluminum used and to reduce weight. it is also a passthrough area for the cables.

This is very disappointing. I’m waiting for the new 11’ iPad Pro, and I was hoping it would get the new display ?
I'm hoping for OLED.

Hate the MiniLED one. It's overhyped but really not that good. My 12.9" sips battery like no tomorrow. The display is expensive, the blooming in perfect black scenes (which is the whole point of the screen) is out of this world obvious and quite awful. Only nice thing is the higher contrast ratio.
My friend's Samsung Tab makes me drool everytime I see the display (the software of course is a whole different story)

So if the rumored wireless charging and reverse charging iPad Pros come out, would that update just be for 12.9"? Or would 11" still get those upgrades but no Mini-LED?

I stands by my prediction that the 11” iPad Pro will disappear in the next round of updates. Expect ~12” and 14”-14.8” iPad Pros with M2 in Q1/23 and the iPad Air 5 to fill the 11” slot for the foreseeable future.

dropping the 11in in favor of the pro line only being 12.9in+ is a terrible idea. The large iPad Pro has never appealed to me due to its size. It’s quite unwieldy.
They should keep the 11in. Just because you want Pro features does not mean you want a gigantic tablet

I really hope they do as they will have a lot more common sense built in to them.

Just wish LG had a lot more quality in their construction. Hard to focus on the image quality when your monitor dances on it's stand like a dashboard hula girl. :p

Want to believe Young, but Kuo is likely accurate.

There are cost pressures all over the place, with M2 being delayed and now partial implementation of A16 in iPhone 14. Mini LED wafers aren’t immune to this.

I wonder if the Apple Studio Display was originally planned to be Mini-LED and ProMotion, but supply constraints and cost pressures pushed it too far upmarket for Apple's comfort. Before the event, we were hearing rumors of the new display being upwards of $2500 (with the optional $400 stand) and while that was still less than half the price of a Pro Display XDR, it makes the actual price of the Apple Studio Display look "thrifty" in comparison. And the current Apple Studio Display is a much better monitor overall than the slightly less expensive LG UltraFine so Apple could make a legitimate case on purchasing it over the UltraFine.

Mini-LED anything unlikely this year. There is a shortage - maybe next year.

I certainly didn't.

I mean it's possible it is LG that will release a MiniLED Ultrafine 5K with 120Hz refresh and not Apple since there was the rumor that LG are working on a new 24", 27" and 32" display and at the time it was presumed they would be for Apple.
Its very reasonable to assume that the Studio Display is only the first release, and other LG displays will be announced later this year or next IMHO.

Apple has rarely done the “new product quickly revised” deal but I doubt they do it with the Studio Display for some reason…didn’t need Kuo to explain it to me.

damn. ipad pro 11 mini led is the only item on my shopping list for 2022 ?

I certainly didn't.

If I recall correctly Young's report on the LG displays didn't include resolution just screen size. LG working on a 4K 27" mini-LED for the larger , general monitor market would make sense. Same with the 32" version.

If it was a quirky. 4.5 , 5K , 6K then that would be more indicative of an Apple only solution.

"... Kuo was referring to a tweet he posted last week when he said that “Apple may not launch new miniLED products this year due to cost concerns.” Although it makes sense that Apple could keep the miniLED technology for bigger displays, it’s weird considering that 9to5Mac and analyst Ross Young believe Apple will launch a new monitor with a miniLED display in the coming months. ..."

LG developed some screens and they don't meet Apple's unit cost criteria then Apple won't use them. Apple probably isn't going to sacrifice margin to win some "tech specs" war broiling in the monitor marketplace. If the unit cost won't show up for 12-20 months then Apple can kick those products to a later release date. Those monitors are strategically or tactically critical for Apple.

24" -- if iMacs don't consume panels of that size it is a bigger deal. And if get a Studio 24 out of Apple it likely won't be mini-LED to hit lower costs ( just like the 27" version ). If Apple cranks up the 24" panel to 600nits that would be a 'new' 24" panel. ( I'd be surprised if Apple doesn't cover the Studio Display upgrade there with the iMac's screen to better protect iMac sales. It isn't a mega upgrade. )

27" -- if unit costs way too high at the moment won't fit iMac role either. The Studio and another 27 mini-LED don't make much sense at all even with an extended release separation. If eventually unit costs on mini-LED panel come down low enough they could replace the initial Studio model with a mini-LED version several years out.

If Apple paused due to high costs, it seems doubtful that LG would press ahead and release an even higher end screen. Even if they did it wouldn't be in a super Mac-only chassis.

32" -- 5K for the mainstream market would likely work.

With Covid , supply chain hiccups ( just had factory shutdowns in China last couple of days) , etc there is pretty good chance that mini-LED doesn't starts to drop along the economies of scale and maturity factors to drop low enough for Apple to buy high volumes of large screens at the prices they want to pay ( probably not much more than what they have been paying for "plain" , high DPI LED. )

Young's sources got 'iMac' confused with 'Studio Display' ( because A13 and camera , mics ). Both Kuo and Young are seeing mostly 'parts' that go into Apple products ( talking to component makers). That Apple wanted some parts but they cost too much right now wouldn't be all that surprising. Additionally, not expanding mini-LED usage in the product line likely makes those screens more readily available to the subset of products that already have them. ( If Apple is looking to cause another spike in demand for a M2 iPad Pro and the MBP 14/16" are still running 'hot' against the demand forecast, then Apple will be selling a boatload of mini-LED screens. )

Yep, it hasn't even reached consumers yet, and, a monitor being refresh yearly it's not something Apple does, I wouldn't expect an updated model in at least 2-3 years time...

The expected Studio Display Pro is not a refresh, it's an additional product to be sold alongside the Studio Display at a different price point.

Ross Young was pretty clear about this in his tweet when he called it a "Pro" version, not an update of the Studio Display, so I don't get why so many here confuse this with a refresh.

It’s becoming harder for Apple to differentiate the different SKUs. I think they should drop the 11 inch iPad Pro, bump the Air to 11 inch and keep it on LCD to truly differentiate the line up.

Not it isn't is put the Air on a 'trailing edge' SoC. 11" iPad Pro goes to M2 along with the 12.9" version and Apple holds the Air on the M1 for an extended amount of time after. (e.g., so only go to M2 about 6 months (or less) before iPad Pro goes to M3).

That makes the iPad Air a "hand me down" SoC product to consume older , already paid for SoCs that Apple can crank out at low cost on a super mature process. Very similar to how the 'plain' iPad gets 2-3 year old SoCs to hit lower price points. And iPhone SE has some overlap with iPhones but only for a relatively short while.

Throw in LIDAR/cameras , more capacity , etc. and there is plenty still for differentiation. The big missing part is getting more elements of iPadOS to take advantage of the general SoC uplift across a broader subset of the iPad line up.
