Interesting - so Kuo and Young, two highly reputable and accurate analysts, are in complete and direct opposition to one another. It’ll be interesting to see who’s right. Kuo’s claims make more sense, but Young is almost never wrong and seems very sure that he’s confirmed there’s a 27” 5K mini-LED panel in production for Apple. Hmmmmmm…

They likely both have sources who are reporting that a 27" 5K MiniLED ProMotion panel exists and they are both presuming it will go into an Apple-branded product, but they don't know what product so they've been guessing between an iMac Pro and a standalone display as those were the two most obvious options.

iMac Pro was the front-runner until Apple unveiled the Mac Studio, which arguably sits right where an iMac Pro would have gone into the lineup. So now they're hedging their bets and saying it might still be for an iMac Pro, but it also might be for a standalone display. And the latter option is likely being boosted in some part as other sources (dylandkt) said LG is/was working on a prototype display that was 27" 5K with MiniLED and ProMotion and LG is the supplier of 5K panels to Apple.

I think Kuo is more likely. Launching in June doesn't sound right (Apple almost never launches anything in June because that month is all about developers) and why would they launch a second companion monitor product to the Mac Studio a few months after the first. They are probably conflating products again.

They used to announce hardware at WWDC pretty regularly. Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR were just released back at WWDC of 2019. Nowadays I think there are just too many OSes for them to get through and also have time for hardware introductions.

I think the expectation was a ‘Pro’ version of the Studio Display that would be priced higher but be mini-LED?
Still doesn't make much sense, since they have the XDR that would benefit more from going miniLED and ProMotion first.

"Hey you were so excited we made a cheaper monitor, but here's another one four months later with way better specs" is not a great strategy for making customers happy, and from Apple's perspective by starting with the low end you've left money on the table.

I doubt we'll see a miniLED studio display until 2023 or later.

Apple often launches it's higher end hardware at or just before WWDC. The idea is that this is the professional forum instead of the consumer focus of most of the other announcements. Apple is widely expected to announce a new Mac Pro at WWDC this year. It would make a lot of sense if they were to announce a Pro monitor to go with it.

Also, this is not a normal year. I don't know what Apple will or won't announce, but don't depend too much on a precedent that Apple themselves don't really follow

Agree. If Apple releases another display this year, it'll be a replacement for the XDR and priced accordingly. Anyone who bought the studio display will not be upset as the price tag on whatever is released will be in the $5-$6k range.

Apple would do that cause it’s a great way to get all the fanboys to sell their recent purchase and upgrade again.

Apple needs to give something to the 11 inch iPad Pro to distinguish further from the recent M1 iPad Air. If it’s not the mini-LED display, what could it be? M2 will be a nice upgrade for sure, but the SoC is already way overkill for what you can do with iPadOS…
For an extra $200, you get:

ProMotion
Quad Speakers
FaceID
Double the storage
More cameras and Lidar
Thunderbolt 4

The Air is terrible value imo next to the Pro regardless of mini-LED.

And 64GB more storage.

Once you upgrade the storage on the iPad Air, it is only $50 cheaper than the 11" iPad Pro.

Wouldn’t we have to wait for TB5 to cover the bandwidth for a 120hz display at 5k resolution? I thought 5k at 120hz would be well above the 40Gbps bandwidth of what TB4 could handle?

Apples alleged super product year gets less interesting by the week and please I say that as a pure consumer. The Mac Studio is not a consumer product. To make matters worse they announced to no longer produce the 27-inch iMac, which was clearly the best consumer product.

I'm hoping for OLED.

Hate the MiniLED one. It's overhyped but really not that good. My 12.9" sips battery like no tomorrow. The display is expensive, the blooming in perfect black scenes (which is the whole point of the screen) is out of this world obvious and quite awful. Only nice thing is the higher contrast ratio.
My friend's Samsung Tab makes me drool everytime I see the display (the software of course is a whole different story)
The mini LED panel on the MacBook Pro is much better. Blooming is very very slight and it’s much better than that of the iPad Pro.
An OLED panel cannot reach the peak brightness level of mini LED panel and it is also not good for displaying static element for a long time like a computer OS interface (burn in). A phone screen doesn’t turn on for a very long time with static screen elements in comparison.

Ross is almost right. There will never be another iMac Pro, don’t even bother arguing this. DCS to hit 120Hz over TB is not a very Apple solution. 2 x display options for 27”, niche within niche, yeah right. There is only one possibility …….

iMac Studio

Most of their consumer sales are in the laptop line. I know that many people were dissapointed that Apple did not bring out a replacement for the 27" iMac (so far), but the Studio Monitor is in a range that overlaps with consumer and professional. No, if you are looking for cheap setup you probably will want a third-party monitor, but plenty of consumers (who can afford MBPs) can also afford a nice monitor, like the Studio.

Brighter screen too.

Yeah. Having customers buy the Studio Display for up to $2,400 I think it is and then 3 months later come out with an upgraded version seems like an odd move. They could have at least announced both and said the 'Pro' version or whatever it's called is coming out in June.

I just ordered the regular Studio Display. So wondering if I should hold off and see what they announce. But then I'd have a Mac Studio with no monitor for a few months.
