How do people assume a 3lbs 15-inch notebook would be branded MacBook Air?
If Apple can brand a 13" notebook with 8GB memory and a regular, not Pro, M2 chip a MacBook Pro, then a 15" notebook can be braned a MacBook Air.

Same thing with the 12" MacBook. It was called a MacBook and not a MacBook Air even though it (0.92 kg) was lighter than the 11" MacBook Air (1.08 kg).

Personally, I think Apple needs to do away with the "Air" moniker and just simply call the 13"/15" laptops "MacBook" and the 14"/16" laptops "MacBook Pro".

The "Air" moniker made sense when the laptops were tapered. Nowadays, it's harder to tell the difference between an MBA and MBP. I think Apple should keep it simple and distinguish between MB/MBP like they did in the late 2000s.
That would make more sense. MBAs have lost their identifying feature.

Pro in this case refers to performance.
Then in the case of a 15" MBA, Air will refer to it being lighter and thinner than a 15" or 16" MBP just like how a 13" MBA is thinner and lighter than a 13" or 14" MBP

I don't see there being an M2 Pro chip at all. M1 Pro/Max are still very new, and not in any need of an update. I see them waiting until late 2023 for an M3 chip with 3nm process for a big performance gain.
I don't disagree—though I'm still waiting to see what kind of refresh cycle Apple goes to once things are settled. In the past it has done minor refreshes when new chips become available, so it could do that here.

If they release the MacPro this fall, it will probably get an M2—unless they have enough of the small amount of M3 production that will be available at that time to outfit the MacPro with those.

As for the M3 Pro/Max models, I was hoping we might see them in spring 2023 rather than fall 2023.

I would say, just a 14" and a 16" MBP. And a 14" MBA. Each with a few configs.

Hopefully if something like this comes true they trim the lineup a bit, otherwise I'm afraid we'll be headed towards 90's Apple with a bunch of random models.

I could see this lineup...

12" MacBook [M2] ($999)
13"/15" MacBook Air [M2] ($1199/$1699)
14"/16" MacBook Pro [M2 Pro] ($1999/$2499)

That would hit all the price points and specifications. All in all, more signs pointing to the M1 MacBook Air and 13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar needing to be killed off. They don't fit and just muddle the lineup.

If the 13" Air doesn't need a fan for its M2, then the 15" Air probably doesn't need one for the same M2.

Even M1 MBA needs a fan. Apple took it out from the chassis just for product positioning purposes. It throttles 10-15% vs. MBP 13.

M2 is even hotter according to Apple.

Another rumor that doesn’t make any sense, like the M2 Max 12 inch MacBook and the 14 inch iPad without miniLed and Promotion.

Then in the case of a 15" MBA, Air will refer to it being lighter and thinner than a 15" or 16" MBP just like how a 13" MBA is thinner and lighter than a 13" or 14" MBP

With the M1 MBA, Apple made it clear it’s about performance. They deliberately took out the fan even though the chassis remained exactly the same from 2018-2020. With M2 MBA/MBP they reconfirmed that decision.

Now they need to cancel the 16" MacBook Pro and bump it up to a 17". 16 is such an odd size anyway. no one uses it except APPLE.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, we still have an Intel Mac mini begging for the M2 chip. Then we would have that one plus the double mini height Mac Studio.

Fully loaded hardware on the 14" MBPro is $5,899 and on the 16" MBPro is $6,099. Fully loaded Mac Studio is $7,999.
Fully loaded M2 MBAir is $2,499. There is a $$$ hole between the M2 MBAir and 14" MBPro that a 15" MBAir could fall into. Could see a $2,999 to $3,500 for the possible 15" MBAir.

Fully loaded 11" iPad Pro is $2,099 and 12.9" iPad Pro is $2,399. If there is a MacPro based upon the "M" cpu family, perhaps it might drop back from the over $50,000 range to the mid $20,000 range.

Good stair steps in the pricing/performance areas.

If this means there is a chance for the 15” MBA to have dual display support (with M2 Pro) that would be amazing.

Yes slightly confusing with the 14” MBP but I still want it to happen.

I just want a 15”+ thin and light computer with multiple display support. I don’t need fancy screens or more ports. 3 thunderbolt ports on the 15” plus MagSafe gets me back to what my 2017 15” MBP should have been!
