I wonder if by lower cost screen they mean "lower pixel density" ?

The iPad mini 4 has 326pi but the iPad Pros are both at 264. I'm not sure if that's because iPad mini users put the screen closer to their faces - but is a screen still retinal at 264ppi? And can one see the difference?

I know the XS to XR ppi change goes from 458 to 326 ppi - but am not sure what they look like.

My gut says it's one thing to charge a premium price for Apple design and ecosystem - it's another thing for them to charge the highest prices and then short-change the guts on their devices.
The iPad mini has a higher density because Apple wanted to maintain the same resolution. When it went retina there was much less fragmentation in iOS. It may or may not keep that same PPI. My guess is that it will. It isn’t really noticeable. The X/Xs have higher PPI screens because they are OLED with pentile subpixels. They need a higher PPI to match traditional LCDs which have an RGB subpixel for each actual pixel. Apple has said that phones need higher density because users hold them closer to their face. Probably true for most.

If no new low cost MacBook is announced or any Mac then most will call it a day and switch to other PCs and just run macOS on that.

I really hope lower cost screen doesn’t mean non laminated!
There’s really three ways Apple could go with the iPad mini: 1) go down market with the non-laminated screen like the 9.7” and 32GB, sell for $249-279; 2) keep the laminated screen/128GB storage and the $399 price; or 3) go upmarket with a mini Pro at maybe a $499-549 price. Listed in the order of likelihood, imo.

In all cases, I expect Pencil support and I’d guess CPU/RAM for the above options at A10/2GB, A11/3GB, A12X/4GB, respectively.

I’ll probably lean towards upgrading my iPad Pro 12.9” (1st gen) to the smaller 10.something” variant if it gets an update. I used to want a mini, but (ignoring size) if the display is inferior to the Pro model, then I’ll probably pass.

iPad mini
Mac mini

sounds to good to be true

Mini-Chi Kuo

Well, if Apple’s tag line for the announcement has anything to do with “good things come in small packages” or something along those lines, then that would be a given that those two products are having updates announced for them.

“Good things come in small packages, but the best come in mini.” ... I can totally see Apple saying something like that.

My guess is that the main purpose of this event is to showcase the new iPad Pros and new Apple Pencil. I think the Mac portion of this event is going to be relatively short and simple:

  • Mac Mini refresh/spec update and new pricing options
  • 12 in Macbook refresh/spec update, possible Touch ID, and new pricing options
  • MBA will be discontinued, and a low cost 12 in Macbook (one of the above pricing options) will take its place at $1,000. This will be a stripped down MacBook with 128GB storage and last year’s specs.
  • iMac refresh/spec updates and new pricing options. They might discoutinue the older non-retina iMac.
So, basically, it might just be a routine refresh/spec update for most of the Macs, with some new pricing options to try to stay somewhat viable at the entry level. We just haven’t seen any leaked new Mac products, and we are only one week away.......so, I am getting doubtful of something new. Kind of a bummer. I own an MBA, and it is such a terrific computer. I was hoping they would create something specifically for the entry level everyday market.
I have a 2012 64gb 11.6 mba which is becoming too slow for imovie and too little space. I'm planning to make a trip down Apple store Singapore this nov.5 and hopefully get a Mac mini with 1tb fusion drive, latest specs and then add a 1080P monitor...

No MBP, I hate having to get a dongle and the keyboard is absymal.

Or would the iPads be a good alternative? Maybe the iMac?

You are all wrong...

Ipad mini will feature A12X, 16MP camera, 12MP Selfie, all screen ipad, apple pencil option

249$

Then the tech sites will give it a score of 10/10, people will fight for it like how they did for ps3s and air Jordans, Google and Amazon suddenly withdraw from the tablet space and hell freezes over.

Apple will not price the iPad mini with such specs at a low price. You should ask Xiaomi forbsuch value.
[doublepost=1540344684][/doublepost]
I would rather have a new iPod Touch.
Ideally at least a a10 fusion, 64gb min, otherwise outwardly the same looks as the 6th gen, or maybe even a plus size option around 4.7 inch

And maybe stereo speakers and ip rating too

I have a mini 3 for work and I absolutely love it. It’s getting a little long in the tooth with it running an A7 but it is my favorite tool to do field IT. I can check email, I can look at tickets and can remote into anything to troubleshoot, all in a very portable package. As far as I’m concerned, the mini has the best form factor for a tablet for non creative purposes. A new model with better internals would be amazing.

Are you running iOS 12? Runs very well on a mini 4, albeit a A8/2GB platform. But a new mini would be very well received. I see them constantly in point-of-sale usage, and I know pilots and doctors find them indispensable. I figured Apple might wait until spring 2019 since iOS 12 breathed new life into the mini 4, but the sooner the better :)

What’s the point of the iPad mini now that iPhones reach the 6.5” territory?
[doublepost=1540352565][/doublepost]Not everyone wants to carry a huge slab around in their pocket. Ipad mini is still the best way to read ebooks - especially good at night when you don't want the light on. A very useful extra device.

I really don't see new AirPods coming out at this event. If they were gonna launch them this year it would've been at the iPhone event in September. This event will be all iPad Pro + Mac.

This is somewhat suspicious... Amazon removed the Airpods from their offerings and snuck in a ship date of November 2nd.

Discuss.

Yeah, I doubt the mini will upstage the iPad. 2GB RAM, Non-laminated panel. A10. 32GB. Pencil support (maybe). Anything else just muddies the product matrix. Unless the iPad gets a A11 bump, I think that's what we can logically expect.

It definitely won’t if they don’t announce it at the same time. The iPad mini would make a very nice counterpart to a Spring announcement of the iPhone XE, just like when the original SE was introduced alongside the smaller iPad Pro. The mini Pro would be an even better companion.

If they just disappeared I’d just chalk it up to a glitch. But Friday Nov. 2 is just the sort of availability date you might expect from an announcement three days earlier.

Completely agreed, the timing is just too perfect for right after the event.

I wish I purchased it when it was in my cart as it would've been cheaper than release date pricing. I just checked and Amazon removed it from my cart (meaning they don't plan on re-stocking).

airpods 2 will be next year thing. This year maybe just airpods with Siri support in a Qi case

Possibly, but we're just wondering whether or not Airpods will be upgraded in any way at the end of the month.

Some early signs by Amazon seem to indicate yes.

If it’s ready now they’ll announce it. There’s probably going to be a new 9.7” announced in March anyway, so if it’s not ready now, that’s a likely release date (assuming it’s going to be refreshed, which I think it will be).

There is no SE follow on though. Discontinuing the SE was the dead giveaway. If they were planning on keeping a smaller iPhone in the lineup, they would have kept the SE around right up until the day it’s replacement was announced. But they didn’t; it’s done. (imo of course.)

Nothing on Macbook Air? That Lenovo X1 is calling my name...

This is EXACTLY what I will do.

Why are people in this thread stuck with the logic "small iPad => small price". That makes absolutely no sense.

If they'll really launch a new iPad Mini this year, I'll be launch customer. The Mini 4 is still running well, especially since iOS 12, but an A11 or A12 with 3GB RAM would certainly boost its performance. Also, I need the cellular version instead of my current WiFi only.

Curious what they might do with airpods to differentiate them from gen 1. I'd really like some sort of sport tips so these don't fall out as easy with a good sweat or when lifting weights (yes I tried, no they didn't work; I do not want to be worrying about earbuds when working out, at all). I could buy some third party stuff but then the cases don't work, and the charging case is half the product. With the direction they've taken Apple Watch, I am hopeful.

Face ID would be an issue for the Aviation Industry IMO. The Mini’s currently in use (huge amount) are shared by many different crew at times. :apple:
Just require a password and disable faceID. I imagine they aren't all using the fingerprint reader right now anyway and are utlising a password. Apologies if I am misunderstanding you. :)

It does not really make sense to annouce a new iPad mini alongside the new Pros. The mini isn't a "pro" device (let's ignore whether the iPad Pro is either). New minis make more sense alongside the spring budget iPad refresh.
I just don't understand why people, including Apple, have such a hard time understanding that "pro" has nothing to do with form factor.

If pro means speed, why wouldn't I want a fast mini?

If pro means display quality, why wouldn't I want a bright, crisp mini?

If pro means small bezels, if anything, the mini would benefit from small bezels much more than larger models, so why would people not want that in their mini?

If pro means pencil support, why wouldn't I want the ability to use a pencil, the mini form factor plus small bezels would provide plenty of screen space.

If pro actually means professional, then I have to say that in my job I have much more use for something I can easily carry around everywhere than for bulkier models. They should get rid of the rear camera though, that thing is of no use and is nothing but unprofessional.

Finally, if pro means expensive, why wouldn't I be prepared to pay for the mini if it is just as powerful as the bigger ones but much more useful?

Now don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with having a low-cost non-pro mini as well for those who are on a tighter budget. But equating smaller with low-cost and low-quality as you do is just completely idiotic.
