I really really really hope this isn't true and that they go LCD. They are aware that flicker sensitivite people have major issues with their OLED phones and if they go all OLED they cut off those of us who can't use OLED. It's sad for a company that take pride in their accessibility.

Wait... Won't this crash the trade-in value of iPhone 14 faster than any other previous generation iPhone?

The SE was worth it because:-

  • no notch
  • screen size operable with one hand
  • home button
  • touch ID

Without these features the SE is just the cheap iPhone, which is ok if you do not want all the bells and whistles.

I am already thinking of moving to a Pixel with GrapheneOS
well funny thing is most of the people using iphone se are teenagers as its a cheap iPhone with latest processor, im sure that teenagers will probably appreciate this change as basically a rebranded iphone 14 for $400 is a steal that im sure teenagers would enjoy

That would be a significant improvement over the current SE. I wonder how it will be priced given that the iPhone 14 currently sells for $799.

I wonder if Apple's plan with the SE 4 is to streamline its low-cost strategy. Apple currently sells the iPhone 12, 13/13 mini and 14/14 Plus in various colors, capacities, and price points. Perhaps Apple plans to scrap all of the old models and simply sell the SE 4 as its entry level device with the 15/15 Plus at the mid-range and the 15 Pro/Max at the high end.

uhhh
did apple forget that se stands for special edition and not exactly the same as other iphones
like the main thing was it was the phone for today in the body of yesterdays phone?
does apple have long-term memory loss?
(im kinda mad mainly bc NO HOME BUTTON WHO DID APPLE LET APROVE THIS JSHHHJKJLSHLKJSHKJLHAHGJAKG)

uh im a teenager who likes my home button, face id looks like a nightmare to use bc my mom has a iphone 11 and struggles to use it
also my brother has a black iphone 14+, and lets just say it might be the ugliest iphone on the planet so no, i wouldn't want that, and i hate apples full screen design with the notch
i love my se just the way it is ^_^
edit: my friend with a 2022 SE also thinks the home buttonless se is pointless

It makes me wonder why would people buy the iPhone 15 over this rumoured SE4.

(I'm assuming that we'll see a March/April 2024 launch for the SE4)

The 15 will have:
  • A new design of course
  • incremental better processor (the A14 mostly likely) and better cameras.
  • Dynamic island
  • Crash detection
  • Satellite SOS
I mean these are nice to haves but I'd bet that they're not worth another $200 / $250/ $300 to get the regular 15.

Perhaps the battery life is going be very good? 🤷‍♂️

I suspect that we'll see the SE4, to keep the costs down:
  • Keep the chassis design of the 14
  • A13 processor and front and back camera from the 13
  • And minus crash detection & satellite SOS from the 14,
But again, I'd be wondering what the regular 15 will have over the SE to justify the cost of it, as if I'm right, the SE4 still sounds a very good 'regular' iPhone.

The Dynamic Island. The SE could come with the A16 and outspec the iPhone 13/14. The same way the current SE does with the 12 while being on par with the 13 and 14.
Sure the processor in the current SE outspecs the 12 and matches the 13, but uses an old design and screen - the current SE is basically an 8 with an A15 chip. What they are talking about here is using the design and screen from the 14, which doesn't seem like an Apple thing to do as it doesn't give enough differentiation between the lower end and the upper end. I don't think people will spend $100s more for just the dynamic island either, and how does Apple keep selling the 13 & 14 as mid range devices when the SE will have the same design and features, with a newer processor and lower price?

It‘ll be a repackaged iPhone 12, reused parts as usual for Tim the tight man.

The only reason it’s getting OLED and not a Repackaged XR which it originally was, is because Google and Samsung have SMASHED the mid range market now.

Pixel 6a comes with FHD+ OLED and 2 camera lens for just £299 in the UK, the SE is £430 with a gross 720p LCD from 2014 and a single lens.

Apple got a wake up call at last.

i get headaches from looking at screens for awhile, and I've learned that OLED screens give me headaches faster than LCD screens, thats also why my little sibling now has a OLED switch now lol
so yeah, it would be a big let down if it is OLED

iPhone 12 with an A15/16/17? At that point why bother over just keeping the iPhone 12 in the lineup an extra year and dropping the price another $100. The A14 is still more than fast enough for an entry level phone. I guess they could drop the ultra wide angle camera to shave a tiny bit more off the price. Even more confusing if the 13 stays on sale alongside it.

Would make more sense to base it on the 13 mini with an updated chipset to keep that size in the lineup and differentiate it from the 4 6.1" options there already are!

I think you’re a bit confused with the SoC numbers. The iPhone 15 will have an A16 (5nm++) and the 15 Pro an A17 (3nm), while the next iPhone SE could come with either an A15 or an A16. Too many numbers, confusing, I know.

I wholeheartedly agree with all of your listed assessments on the SE line!

There are so many folks for whom a tactile home button makes usage of their phone so much easier...case in point, my cousin who has suffered a stroke and is in need of an easy-to-manage phone.

And then there are those who, like myself, much prefer the home button to a plain glass screen (when it comes time to upgrade from my 8 Plus I'll likely go with the current SE model unless v.4 also has the home button!).

It would be nice if Cupertino gave the SE line a dual camera! :)

uhhhh
the phone is meant to have a "gross" 720p LCD and single lens because
1 SE stands for special edition, its meant for people who like smaller/more basic phones
2 people praised it for being todays phone in yesterdays body
3 maybe i want a phone that will fit in my pocket that uses IOS and isn't completely overkill?
4 not everyone can use OLED (like me) without having issues or discomfort (i can use OLED for about 30 mins, then its time to lie in a dark room and take ibuprofen!)
5 Touch ID and home button, the home buttonless designs w/ face id are horrible, i opened a friends phone using a photo of them, (it was a iPhone XR btw) and the design just looks like a run of the mill android with a notch on it.

This smells like a quick transition from their iPhone 14 with lightning port, to a 14-like iPhone with USB-C.

I will probably get the 14 tho, because of the trusted Qualcomm modem and the cameras, that could be downgraded in this next SE 2024.
