Am I the only one wondering if MagSafe on the new laptops uses the same “puck” as iPhone but attaches magneticly over the Apple logo on the back of the screen?

Yes, you are the only one.
No - I immediately thought that the new MagSafe could be a puck magnetically attached to the laptop somewhere.

Or is the rumour confused and it actually means resting your phone on the palm rest (perhaps) and charging that way? Although then your phone would get in the way of typing.

Interesting, I wonder if the fact that they’re abandoning the four USB-C ports is a form of recognition that the USB-C experiment has mostly been a failure?
When it was first introduced, along with thunderbolt three, it was touted as the port to kill all ports. You would be able to plug anything in, and no matter what it was, it would just do what it was supposed to do.
Need to transfer data? That would do that.
Need to transport video? It would do that.
Need to use it for anything else? It would do that.
And on top of that, it was the charging port.
It was a brilliant idea, one port for everything. No need to go searching around for different cables for different things, because one cable would do it all.
In execution, it has gone horribly. Some products have slower ports than others, some don’t have thunderbolt while others do, some peripherals don’t work with certain ports, and it’s just been an absolute mess.
Honestly, it was easier when everything was just separate ports. At least then there was a little bit less confusion on what cables would work with what standards.
So instead of simplifying things, all removing the ports did was make us have to buy more adapters. And when we originally thought those adapters would eventually become useless, the exact opposite has happened. Five years later, and we’re still relying on damn dongles.
So them introducing a new model with all of the old ports back is a step in the right direction, and an admission of failure.

This does not make any sense:

The new MacBook Pro machines will feature a flat-edged design, which Kuo describes as "similar to the iPhone 12" with no curves like current models.

The iPhone 12 uses a flat edge curved design. Unless he means they are going back to the 2006 MacBook Pro straight edge design, just with the current thinness of course.

I would find it strange for them to go back to adding more ports like USB A. I assume SD card reader maybe? But since upgrading to the 2020 M1 from my 2015 MacBook Pro, I haven't missed a single port. In fact, SD Card, HDMI port, older Thunderbolts were rarely, if ever used.

As for the Touch bar, I actually like it and it does not bother me one bit. Its usage I will admit is sparse, but so were the existing function keys on older generations, outside of volume up and down.

Considering I just bought my M1, I won't be an early adopter and will likely wait this one out for a few years. I am more likely to upgrade again next year Christmas, but go for an iMac instead. Hope they introduce a 32 inch screen.

One note I forgot to add, I will welcome the return of Magsafe. Although with 20 hour battery life on the M1, I rarely plugged in, but the charger for my 2015 is close to me and wound up in my feet the other day when I was stepping away from my desk and I pulled effortlessly. I don't think that would be same effect if it was the M1 with USB C.

This is so exciting! A redesign is very welcomed! I recently picked an M1 MBP to test and it’s just incredible. If anyone from Apple who worked on this machine reads this, CONGRATS! Nailed it!

However, I love the Touchbar, so I’m sad to see it go. I guess I got used to it, but I like changing the brightness/sound and the word function. I wonder if they’ll add it like a ‘customize your Mac’ option. It’d be nice for people like me & others who don’t like it could save a few bucks too.

“The MagSafe .. design is restored” would not be a sentence that makes any sense in either of these interpretations.

Sigh...... The Touch Bar was a really good concept but the ultimate execution and utilization is awful......

I mean come on, who in the hell will scroll the timeline in Final Cut Pro with the Touch Bar in the first place? It should've been much more useful features such as volume adjustments for individual selected clips instead in the very first place.

But then hey, this also reflects that those who designed the implementation of the features DOESN'T REALLY USES THE SOFTWARE

Sorry for the banter but, seriously, the Touch Bar is just one great feature that was wasted.

There's no harm in having more ports on a Pro/power user laptop and the Touch Bar. The majority don't like it.

But honestly, that is the point of having those ports on a computer. If you need them, they are just there. Someone with an old camera gives you an SD-card to copy pictures. It might only happen 1-2 times a year, but if you don't have it its annoying. and the SD slot is so slim, I don't think that space constraints it. Same with 1-2 USB A ports. Rarely use it, but there are situations when you just get someone's USB drive to copy a couple of files.
Same with HDMI, if you need to give a talk somewhere and prefer to bring your computer, in 99% of the cases they at least have an HDMI cable.

I also very rarely use these ports. But it's a professional machine and I expect things to just work, so honestly at least an SD slot, single USB-A and HDMI port would be quite helpful. On the contrary, I think old Thunderbolt cables are quite rare and used in special circumstances, probably mostly at your desk, so a dongle is alright.
