Am I the only one wondering if MagSafe on the new laptops uses the same “puck” as iPhone but attaches magneticly over the Apple logo on the back of the screen?

No, that would be silly.

USB-C already carries both data and power using one cable. MagSafe in that fashion would be a step backwards.

I hope they announce the redesigned Mac mini this year with more ports, 3 monitor support and 32gb of ram capability

i guess Jony Ive didn’t design these Macs, so we are seeing function over form

This is too good to be true...

If true, they'll sell a billion of these.

I'm not sure MagSafe is a good thing though. Power over USB-C/Thunderbolt has been fantastic. It's really convenient. I wonder if it would use both. Maybe it comes with the USB-C bring in the box with a USB-C to USB-C cable, just as they do today. That's the normal charger. But, just like the iPhone, you could buy a USB-C to MagSafe cable to use with that brick and charge it that way? Buying a MagSafe cable sounds very Apple-like... but having a MagSafe port that is unused out of the box does not. I can't really predict how MagSafe will go on the new models, but I hope we don't lose the ability to charge with Thunderbolt.

Just one refinement with the keyboard, and everything is good to go! Time to save money for the yesr-end. Can’t wait!!!

I still prefer the Intel-based MBP as I prefer not to rely on Apple designed CPU / GPU until newer revisions are released in the future which have no drawbacks. We have always been told to never get the first of a new revision of hardware as better versions come out down the track. My next MBP will be the i9 fully specced with 2TB SSD / ATI GPU with HMB memory and 64GB RAM. I will avoid M1 etc until its been fine-tuned and truly outperforms all aspects of the Intel equivalent with no drawbacks either in software or hardware or incompatibility issues.

As for the touch bar I believe for this price range this should be included, whereas the cheaper models should have it removed. MagSafe should have never been dumped as its a great system which has been reliable for years. It's not the fastest charging system on the planet however Apple could use USB-C charging with the MagSafe reliability combined as one - best of both worlds. I'm still baffled why Apple removed the light up logo on the screens as well as the backlight still exists, but the cut out of the aluminium doesn't - free advertising feature removed which is odd for Apple.

It appears the complaints of using dongles for virtually everything has finally been heard by owners / purchasers / consumers and it appears Apple is listening finally. Apple is well known for choosing aesthetics over functionality and many people have not been impressed with this thinking as is causes more expense and more inconvenience. Apple should also bring back the matte screen option as well. I'm surprised they don't use OLED for the screen as this requires no backlight and therefore reduces power consumption, or MiniLED however this is only in its first generation so would avoid it till the future revisions come out.

MagSafe on MacBook will be a traditional form of MagSafe, not using a puck.

MacBook Pro 13 M1 pulls nearly 50W. The 16-inch model will probably hit 65W. MagSafe is currently limited to 15W.

I seriously doubt Apple includes anything but USB-C. When have they backtracked on anything in recent years?
Yeah and while they’re at it they’ll kick sand in our faces and tell us we’re weak and stupid and to just stay in line and be quiet.
Who are we to dream? Free thinkers casting our lures into an ocean of possibilities? P’sha and away with us back to our dreary dungeons of existential dread.

Will it be giving up a usb-c port that can do everything for a MagSafe port that can only charge? Or will it be adding an extra MagSafe port? I suppose the latter is better but probably comes with some trade offs of its own.

edit- I wonder how well usbc MagSafe adapters work.

It never really made sense. If it was tactile, it might have worked. But having to look down at your keyboard to find where controls are is bad.
I’m not sure what percentage of the population uses function keys by feel. That seems like mainly a coder skill. I’d think most need to look at the keys anyway, so for them having an adaptive Touch Bar would be more useful than static function keys—assuming developers utilize it. But yes, adaptive and tactile would be most ideal.

I think there's room for improvement.

I always thought that taper design was dishonest, trying to make the laptop look thinner than it was. Haha

Is this a bad time to request a not as long trackpad. They all constantly misread my palms all of the time. The hight is fine and they would still be longer than the original trackpad (though that size was just fine..)

This is like a macrumors forum wish list.

Personally, not thrilled by MagSafe, unless you can still charge by usb-c. I have 90’ish watt USB-C chargers everywhere I need them, and it’s nice to be able to plug in any of the family’s macs, ipads, etc. when necessary.
Would predict you can still charge via USB-C as-well. And that the MagSafe will be a USB-C to MagSafe cable.

I am not a huge fan of boxy/flat edge designs, and it’s hard to imagine how they can “improve” on the current design of the MBP because the current design feels so perfect for me. 😒

I feel the same way about Force/3D Touch on Apple Watch and iPhones. I'm personally not a fan of the touch bar, but give me my Force/3D Touch back!
OH YES AND THAT TOO.

I can understand the manufacturing costs and durability side of the removal of Force/3D Touch, but the reasoning of "nobody uses it"? That's BS. Total BS.

I still frequently try and Force Touch and attempt to clear my notifications on my watch up to this day. It was just a shame to see a unique, advance and great feature to be removed

I actually really like the implementation of the Touch Bar, but I understand why it may not be favored for many reasons, and particularly for consumers really have no use for it, and of course it ‘up’s’ the price of the MacBook. So the fact that it might be eliminated , might be for the better, even though I do think it really is a tech piece of ingenuity.
