It would be nice if the SD card was flush with the outside when it was inserted and it could be ejected with a software command, similar to how Mac floppies worked. Then it could be safely used as additional portable storage.
You can get flush Micro SD card adapters for like 2 dollars, but of course without all of that other cool stuff.

I’ve traditionally done this in the past to add another 128-256GB for moving around large files and to store awkwardly large stuff from my faster system drive. It was a great way to supplement my SSD without adding bulk. “Sadly” I now have an M1 MacBook Air that has 30GB free.

I wonder how easy/difficult it would be to load my entire iTunes library onto a permanently-inserted SD card. That would sure free up a ton of space on my internal drive.

I can do without USB A as long as it supports multiple external displays like Intel models. Still holding onto my 2015 MBP with ports galore.

On the other hand, why not USB A? - Why can't I plug in a current iPhone or iPad into a current laptop?

I attempted this with a 2012 MBP. The bus speed was hella slow, and not usable. Granted things have improved since then, but I think read/write speeds will still be greatly slower than on native ssd.

Apple plans to release two new MacBook Pro models equipped with an HDMI port and SD card reader in the second half of 2021, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who outlined his expectations in a research note obtained by MacRumors. The return of an SD card reader was first reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman last month.

"We predict that Apple's two new MacBook Pro models in 2H21 will have several significant design and specification changes," wrote Kuo. "Some of the practical changes for users are equipping with the SD card reader and HDMI port."

Last month, Kuo said Apple is planning all-new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with several changes, including the return of the classic MagSafe charging connector with a breakaway power cable, the removal of the Touch Bar, a new flat-edged design, and the return of more ports built into the notebooks for expanded connectivity. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman echoed many of these details in his reporting.

Kuo said Taiwan's Genesys Logic will be the exclusive supplier of the SD card reader in the 2021 MacBook Pro models.

I'll believe it when I see it.

That would be Apple admitting they were wrong when they claimed USB-C would be enough for professional users.

Your anecdote of knowing "every single pro" isn't a strong argument as I have no clue how many that is, who that is, or how well connected you are with the overall DSLR/mirrorless pro industry
To me the stronger argument is that the amateur market is far larger than pros, and pretty much every one of their Sony/Nikon/Canon DSLR and mirrorless cameras certainly use an SD card.

I have a maxed out 16" that I bought late last year and I do miss the SD card slot. The avionics system in my small airplane uses them and when on the road it would be much nicer to not carry a dongle. I am surprised that they got rid of it in the first place.

If this was true, talk about huge backtracking. I mean Apple already when through many years without HDMI and SD card slot. Tit’s is not like Apple just removed them yesterday. I can understand SD card slot, but HDMI? Seems like a waste of space. Better put more USB-C ports imo.

Or is this showing the limitations if the current M1/X I/O?

Just a basic HDMI out so that presentations in higher education are possible without a stupid dongle.

Not to mention I have never been more infuriated with a design update that turned changing my volume into a 2 step process I know need to pay close attention to. Function key; press. Done. Ugh.
Idk if you realize you can press and hold then slide the sound but you can. A lot smoother than tapping and then adjusting. Still not same as a tactile button but in some ways I like it a bit better

bringing back the sd slot is such a stupid idea. for professional cameras, plenty of them use CFAST cards and a lot of them are moving over to USB-C SSDs. have you seen the cost and max size of high performing SD cards to record 4k/6k/8k ProRes RAW/Blackmagic RAW footage?
Lol. SD cards are still the go-to for every major camera manufacturer. If you need raw video, you’re probably in need of a cinema grade camera. (The kind that never used SD cards anyway.)

SD cards work well for most video, and unless you need to shoot 15+ frames per second, pretty much all still photography.

What’s next, an optical drive
Putting a Blu-Ray drive in a Mac finally would be fantastic. Those who didn’t want it could replace it with a SATA SSD which would be a great option for storing files not needed on the boot drive. Not holding my breath though.

I'm definitely buying the second gen version of this next year. My 2019 16" MBP isn't old enough and I'm going to wait for them to iron out any issues and allow for more apps to make the native transition. Sounds really great! Hopefully the SD card reader is UHS-III for the higher speed cards that will become more common among professionals in the next couple years. If not, hopefully at least by the time I get the next version in 2022.

If Apple comes out with a more prosumer friendly 5K or 6K display, I might just sell my 2019 iMac as well and go back to running everything off a MBP with external display. That is assuming I'll be able to get this thing with 64GB of RAM. I'm starting to get tired of switching back and forth between a desktop and a laptop. This is the first time I've ever done that and it gets annoying when I'm in the middle of a complicated task with multiple windows open across several apps and want to move outside to enjoy the weather or if I'm enjoying the weather and decide I need to take this downstairs to work across two 27" displays with better specs. The nice thing about the new Apple Silicon Macs is that I won't really have to make a tradeoff for performance as the MBP will be way faster than my current, not even that old iMac.

is very strange from the company that is moving forwards the industry....to be the company thats starting to makes some steps back...
We understand the semi step back with the keyboard because a design failure from reliability stand point ...but this..is strange
No need for flash...no need for optical drive no need for usbC, no magsage the mass market adapted and embraced the future...
Again, if this came after 1-2 years after 2016 MBP...maybe then was some kind of a reason, but after 5 years...
From Apple thats telling you what you will need, what the future looks like....now Apple is driven by the users and fans, where they decide the product ...like its happening in every other tech companies

I’ve had no issues with multi port adapters, and it’s not a two step process to change volume. Perhaps learn how to use your device before criticising it.

let's move on from SD. Apple was right to remove them. rather have an extra USB4/Thunderbolt 4 port.

this is one of those situations where Apple should tell everyone to shut up and be glad they're removing the Touch Bar at least.
Who do you think you are? Do you really think the leaders at the company have their heads in the sand or what? Market research was conducted. Analysis were completed. If they’ll do it, it’ll be because they’ve done the homework.
