Who do you think you are? Do you really think the leaders at the company have their heads in the sand or what? Market research was conducted. Analysis were completed. If they’ll do it, it’ll be because they’ve done the homework.

Oh, so removing the SD card was done without market research and now they're doing market research?

Really?

DSLR has been in decline since 2013. It's obvious use cases for SD is on its way out in the future.

No, they don’t. I’ve been a professional photographer for 16 years. The vast majority of cameras on the market still use SD cards. Probably 90%, even most the high end ones recently released.

The group of people on MR who believe Butterfly keyboard has no reliability problem and SD Card are no longer used by photographers.

Not only that. The trend is even wrong. SD Card isn't going anywhere in the near future.

SD card slot and HDMI port are nice.

But I still hear people complain about missing the USB-A port... particularly when someone hands them a flash drive...

I wonder... between SD card slot and USB-A port... which is missed more?

USB4 will be USB-C *only*. USB-C may not be the best port for Power and everything. But it definitely should be the default port for USB going forward.

So - serious question - Does anybody still use ethernet?
Using it right now. I have all of my Macs plugged in using ethernet. Ethernet is still way more reliable than Wi-Fi. What's more if you have very old Macs they may have gigabit ethernet but only support an older wi-fi standard e.g. 802.11n. Not only is ethernet more reliable it's also a lot faster. Wi-Fi performance on my 2009-2011 Macs isn't going to be great, but they all have gigabit ethernet.

I only use Wi-Fi on my laptop when I am away from my desk.

I am really happy to see both SD and HDMI making a return.
Now please apple upgrade the webcam.
You make amazing cameras in the iPhone and the webcams you use are so bad.
With these ports and a amazing webcam the mbp will be the number one choice for people WFH and people in education.

So - serious question - Does anybody still use ethernet?. And could I have an old USB for dongles? Please.
Ethernet? Yes all the time. The data rates on Wifi in some environments are pitiful, sometimes through bad fortune, often because the wifi point planning was done before room reuse.

For me
Four USB/TB ports
HDMI
Ethernet

would be ideal.

The dongles for ethernet on the M1 machines have been a bit pants for many people, so having an in machine implementation would be great.

Of course. USB-C is great... having one port that can handle USB, Thunderbolt, displays, and power!

However... this "going forward" started 5 years ago... and people still have devices and cables with USB-A plugs today. And they're frustrated about having to "carry a dongle" just to use a simple flash drive or whatever.

That's all I was saying.

Oh I'm sure there will never be a USB-A port on a Mac laptop ever again. I was just wondering where the USB-A port would rank among the desire to bring back other ports like HDMI and the SD card slot.

:)

bringing back the sd slot is such a stupid idea. for professional cameras, plenty of them use CFAST cards and a lot of them are moving over to USB-C SSDs. have you seen the cost and max size of high performing SD cards to record 4k/6k/8k ProRes RAW/Blackmagic RAW footage?

let's move on from SD. Apple was right to remove them. rather have an extra USB4/Thunderbolt 4 port.

this is one of those situations where Apple should tell everyone to shut up and be glad they're removing the Touch Bar at least.

CFAST is mostly for video/movie cameras, but it's so expensive that most filmmakers rather connect an SSD via USB-C.

Yes, all the people doing still photography will now be happy and hopefully shut up whining about having to log around a 100g SD card adapter. I'm just wondering, if it really is worth making yourself look really stupid first abandoning the slot, now back-pedaling, just to shut up the whining of a few still photographers…

I'd love to see Apple use the slot that the newest Sony cameras are using... combo SD/CFexpress Type A

It's a little thicker than a plain SD card slot so I might not actually fit.

But it would be a good way to use two types of cards in a single slot. A little bit of the old with a little bit of the new. And it might push manufacturers to start adopting CFexpress Type A.

“We will see how quickly they really move to CFx across all of their cameras,” Lewis continued. “Also, even though it is a shrinking market, lower-end cameras will still have SD for a while since they won’t need the power of a CFx card.”

Shrinking market - self explanatory
Lower-end cameras - dying. being replaced by phones. https://petapixel.com/2017/03/03/latest-camera-sales-chart-reveals-death-compact-camera/

2.
“I think that there will be a decent size market for SD for several years,”

Ambigious. Apple designs for the majority. Not for a "decent size" market.

3.
"To say that support for SD should today be discarded is shortsighted, as the format still has several years left in widespread usage."

DVD drives had more than several years left when MacBook Air was introduced. And it was the right choice.
Flash was at its peak before Apple decided to not include support for the iPhone and iPad. Again, right choice.

Since when did Apple wait for a third party hardware standard to die before removing it from a major product line?

I can't wait to see Apple's Spin Department get a hold of this if this pans out. Chances of Cook saying this a "natural progession for the Mac" rather than manning up and admitting his gross mistakes over the last few years is high.

I would like to see Apple partner with DSLR companies to provide a compelling alternative to SD cards. Make USB-C connectivity mainstream. Fix the awful wireless experience with DSLRs. Wouldn’t it be sweet if you could just “connect” your camera to your Mac and it instantly transferred all your shots there?

Thats Pro.

To me the stronger argument is that the amateur market is far larger than pros, and pretty much every one of their Sony/Nikon/Canon DSLR and mirrorless cameras certainly use an SD card.
DSLR market is shrinking fast. Mirrorless cameras are on a downward trajectory. It's not about the current adoption. Apple has almost always looked at future adoption (Flash, DVD drives, headphone jack, USB-A, Floppy, etc...)

My sense is that Apple saw Mac sales aren't where they expected to be today and they're mistakingly attributing it to SD slots (when it could entirely be because of touchbar and/or butterfly switch keys).

Yes I did and while I have to admit that Apple’s late to the party, the SD standard has evolved to the point it is still the main solution and will still be for years. Granted that Pro users will likely own Pro cameras but as of now they are still using SD cards. Also the spec sheet of the MBP has been set a year before it’s manufacturing. The chosen few that will use CFx will get an usb-c adapter. The vast majority that won’t have 2021+ top of the line will be pleased to have a native sd(hc/xc/uc) card reader.

USBc x 4
USB a x 1 for dongles
Ethernet
HDMI
SD slot
Headphone / Mic 3.5mm
No touchbar
Must have ability to drive 2 x 4k external screens reliably.
PLEASE

Then put it all in a Macpro mini - with a handle.
