Is this Apple-approved as in sold in their stores? I generally go with Belkin or Anker if I can't find something in Apple Stores. Ideally I'd like something made by Apple.

Apple also has their own usb-c ethernet adapter, but as I was reading peoples comments in this thread they were saying that Apples adapters are not reliable.

Yes, the pro bodies start about $3000 and the pro sport/wildlife bodies start at $6000. A full frame sensor is expensive, but putting up a A7iii, you might as well put up the $999 Canon RP and call that a pro body. While a professional can get excellent images out of it, it doesn't change what it is.
So, all professional photographers buy camera bodies that start at $3000? Is that really the hill you wish to die on?

I wonder if Apple has put as much effort designing their next laptops as we have in the 20 pages in this thread. :)

Card slot? Yes/No

If Yes... which one? SD, CF, CFe, CFast, XQD ?

My perspective is that if you don't make what I want, then I won't buy your product.

You know, capitalism.

Apparently Apple has figured that out and will be adding HDMI ports to their MacBook Pros.

So that they can catch up with the Mac Mini.
They didn’t figure anything out. They aren’t able to do 4 TB ports for whatever reason. Didn’t on the mini, and now the next MBP. So the new/old ports are just filling in the gap.

Apple can do whatever they want to as it's their Silicon. They just chose the best business decision which is the low-end.

That is a TB1/2 fitting not a USB-C/TB3 one which they don't make.

You're not paying attention.
The M1 Mac mini dropped from a 4port/2controller configuration to a 2port/2controller configuration. The next 4-port device to be replaced are the next MacBook Pros and sure enough, rumor has it adopting this same config. But since that's all the device has, Apple is adding other ports such as HDMI to fill in the gap.

Clearly there is some limitation forcing Apple to go down to 2 TB ports on Apple Silicon Macs. You and I don't know what it is, but can clearly see it happening. You can't make the excuse that Apple just wants to add back HDMI and others to the MacBook Pro, because the M1 mini already had those ports and it lost 2 TB ports anyway.

Nor me - my comments and the linked thread were about USB-3 connection type. No-where has anyone said that Apple connectors are unreliable. The trouble is we are now on page 21 and people do not read all of the threads before posting!

I can make any argument I want to and Apple can put in anything that they want to if they want to.

We are talking about professional photographers and you are linking consumers cameras. Yes a camera you take on your vacation with you might have a SD card but like that Rebel you can also plug it directly into your computer to export the JPG's you shot with it.

Again I have no issue with SD slots on the MBA. But it has no place on Apple's pro line.
No, you moved the goalpost to pro cameras only. I said 90% of the cameras on the market use SD (more like 95% actually) and that SD was the industry standard. Both my statements are factual. Im a pro who uses SD only and there are tons of others who do as well. I encourage you to go to a forum like DP Review and post a poll. You'll find the vast majority of photographers, pro or otherwise, are using SD.

Apple apparently thinks SD has a place on their Pro computers and there must have been strong demand to bring it back, that's why they did. Im sure they have done far more R&D on the subject than you or I have too. There is no such thing as a "pro" camera by the way. Some reading for you. Done with this conversation, thanks.

"The MacBook Pro lineup hasn’t offered an SD card slot since Apple removed the feature in its 2016 redesign, which excised all the ports from the laptops in favor of four universal USB-C ports. This forced many professional users — who rely on the popular memory card format to import photos and videos to their computers for editing — to turn to much-reviled dongles to get the same functionality."

The goalpost was never moved, I have said consistently that the MBA can have a SD slot to support consumers and consumer cameras. SD never made sense in the pro line up, when they did have SD slot it was crippled in read speed at at a time when CF cards dominated every pro camera and even many of the higher end crop cameras had CF.

You're assuming that Pro users only deal with cameras.

I'll believe it when I see it.

That would be Apple admitting they were wrong when they claimed USB-C would be enough for professional users.
USB-C is merely a connection; USB4 + accounting for HDMI 2.1 having more bandwidth necessitates from a design standpoint that they need to add more ports that aren't USB-C to accommodate professionals.

If they *want* to have only ports w/ USB-C, they need to add Displayport 2.0 & USB4 to their Macbooks.

SD/CFAST is their biggest dilemma deciding on including to their pro machines; the ladder isn't cheap & it may be a stretch financially to see them add that to all SKUs.

No assumptions was made, from the very start I made clear I am speaking specifically about pro photographers as often we are highlighted as the ones that suffered most from a slot that we never used. My CF cards didn't fit in the slot and my XQD and CF Express cards would need a TB3 reader which would take up PCIe lanes that could be used to just put in another TB3/4 port.

I just want 1 USB A port. I know it's not techy or trendy to want it, but all my places of work still use it. It's purely a convenience thing and my own use case, but dammit Apple, think of me! I'll get by with a dongle, but I'm 99.9999999% close to not buying a windows machine. BUT I've got me dongle and that'll have to do pig, that'll hafta do.
The dongle for USB-A are literally a quarter of a finger & cost less than 2 dollars + tax in Silicon Valley. There's no need to lose an existing Thunderbolt 3 port for that. USB4, AFAIK, is transitioning to USB-C only.

There's not much need to include USB-A.

Or with manufacturers incapable of getting USB-C to work with their designs 😬
USB-C is easier, slimmer, & far more user friendly (reversible) than USB-A. If they can't get it to work with their design, they are incompetent product designers or dealing with questionable constraints outside of their control.

I see. Then you have no problems with other Pros that appreciate the SD card slot.

Stay at home Moms in their 30s with 3 kids who have Canon Rebels NEED an SD Slot! How will they ever do their "mini photo shoots"?

Of course not, I hear they are popular for sound engineers. But am more than fed up of pro laptops being marked down because they lack a SD slot for pro photographers, when again the most popular cameras for pros are the Canon 5D line and Nikon 8xx bodies, which all have old IDE based CF cards or newer bodies all have CF Express/XQD.

I don't care how big they are or how much they cost or where I can buy them (not sure what Silicon Valley has to do with it). It's still a PITA.

I said it was for personal reasons, but I'll bet that more people still use USB A on a regular basis than HDMI or SD card slot.

Nobody likes a dongle!

So really, if they are including those two ports, why not go the full monty!

if it doesn't have a USB A port, I'm fine. I'll live with the minor inconvenience. But one can dare to wish for the perfect computer!!!
