Would be truly Pro if the HDMI port was an INPUT...
YEP!! hdmi in -- you can get hdmi -> USB Adaptors for $10 , if apple had something at least as good as that built in it would pretty incredible. It's would be like 1996 again. They could call it MacBook Pro AV . seriously though this would be a realy great addition, baked in hi quality video input.

What I like to ask the people on here complaining that they don’t ‘want’ an SD card slot or HDMI port is; what do you have to lose?

If you don’t need or want to use those ports, then don’t use them. It really is as straightforward as that. Additional I/O isn’t suddenly going to make your experience worse.

HDMI should not return, seriously, how many people really need that?
In terms of numbers, you are right… only people who present at customers, in group meetings or in the public – in a way, a pre-COVID scenario – really need that.

The issue is:

These people are multiplicators, which is a huge issue in a mixed environment:

It is quite detrimental for the brand, if the Mac guys at the table always have to attach a dongle to attach the HDMI projector or meeting room monitor while the rest of the world just plugs the HDMI in.

It's just silly and it makes your new shiny MacBook Pro look like an overdesigned toy, instead of a working machine.

Then why did they remove SD Cards in the first place?
Seriously, they made a mistake. No need to fanboy and claim everything they do is so smart and intentional.
I am not sure about a mistake, more a design philosophy - Jonny Ives wanted thin and smooth – I think that this often went beyond function. When computers become things of beauty before things of use we are in trouble!

No, they don’t. I’ve been a professional photographer for 16 years. The vast majority of cameras on the market still use SD cards. Probably 90%, even most the high end ones recently released.
Totally agree. My wife is a professional photographer for the last 10 years and both of her cameras are SD. I showed her this story and she immediately said “yay, that’s a lot more convenient.”

True but a lot of us just use the SD as a 2nd jpeg back up and not the primary card so re including an SD reader seams pretty antiquated to me. SD cards can't keep up with fast shooting in raw, 4k video, or fast frame rates and they are more prone to fail on you at some point. I think most of us have already invested in a good USB-C type card reader that also reads our C-fast or CFexpress cards. I've been a commercial photographer for about 10 years and have never missed the SD reader in my 2019 MacBook Pro.

Apple have a pro and non-pro line, let pros have our CF Express slot and non-pro's have SD slots.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough: A lot of people are indeed Pros in other professions (i.e. programmers), while still using SD cards. Therefore your suggested way of slicing the market would fail anyway.

You won't get your CF Express slot for a number of reasons. Pro Photographers are a dying species, they lack mass market relevance.

I wonder how easy/difficult it would be to load my entire iTunes library onto a permanently-inserted SD card. That would sure free up a ton of space on my internal drive.
That’s exactly how I’ve been doing it fit years in my old MacBook Air.
The easiest way is to just copy the library folder to the SD, then make an alias to it and move and rename that alias to where the original library was.

Occasionally the SD will eject itself but also reconnect for no reason. But for everything where performance doesn’t matter, I keep it on the SD and include it in the backups.
Oh yea, be sure to set it up as an encrypted drive, just in case someone just pulls it out and you notice it only days later.

I’m thinking they may have been unable to figure out how to add more ports to the m1 chip

I could care less about SD coming back. I’ve always used external readers, versus a usb-a thumb drive is so freakin common. As for HDMI I;d love that to come back. I have the Apple dongle (actually 2, only one of which supports 4K 🤬). The other big USB-a thing I use is a keyboard. I have a usb-c mouse, but haven’t seen a high quality usb-c keyboard. The last gen intel Mac mini did it right with USB-a, C and HDMI. No dongle snarl h-behind there. External dongles for card reading is so common it didn’t bother me when it went away. Every built in slot has always sucked compared to the external ones in my experience.

So they convince (forced) us all in move to usb-c and now that the industry has finally adapted to it, they'd bring back the old tech? I spent a lot on a usb-c card compatible 4k monitor, and card reader. I also feel bad for the companies that made all these products to support apple and their all in move to usb-c. If those 3rd party companies didn't hop on board, apple would been in a bad spot and now they are changing their minds?

Not to mention I have never been more infuriated with a design update that turned changing my volume into a 2 step process I know need to pay close attention to. Function key; press. Done. Ugh.
I don't understand this complaint at all. I *guess* you can call tapping on the volume icon and sliding left or right "a 2 step process" (although it feels more like one fluid motion to me), but I really prefer it to the old function-key approach. It allows you to quickly change the volume to a greater degree without repeated taps and makes smaller volume intervals possible without the use of an additional modifier key.

It would be nice if the SD card was flush with the outside when it was inserted and it could be ejected with a software command, similar to how Mac floppies worked. Then it could be safely used as additional portable storage.
Then how would they sell a larger SSD!?

I am pro Touch Bar.
Same. There is so much Touch Bar hate here, but I just don't get it. Personally, I like having things like the predictive text or emojis available in most apps, and apps like Word that include the functions like being able to quickly change the text color or apply formatting with a single tap actually improve my workflows.

I have done something similar. Since my M1 MBP is not my main computer, I bought the 8/256 configuration.

I copied my iTunes / Music library (about 55 GB) to an external SSD and I use a USB-A to USB-C connector. I didn't notice any performance hit when playing music form that external drive.

One thing to be aware of, regardless of what "external" solution you try - by default (well, at least on my M1 MBP Music app), when you add music it gets copied to the default folder on your internal drive. You have to go into Music preferences and change it not to copy.

I did find out the first time, when I imported the music and it got copied to the internal SSD that the transfer was very fast, even though the external drive enclosure uses USB A. I thought I hadn't selected all of the music, but when I scrolled down through the Album list to see what did get imported I realized "Holy ****, everything got copied so fast I didn't even see a popup status bar!"

I can’t be the only one here but… I never owned a MacBook Pro until recently and I though the touch bar was a totally ridiculous, gimmick of an idea. I then bought my M1 Pro despite my reservations around the Touch Bar and, well, it’s pretty cool actually…
Sane here. I do have to remember to use it since my M1 MBP is the first MBP I have had with a Touch Bar.

But I do like it. However, I have to admit I wouldn't miss it if it goes away. Well, unless I get used to it and like using it - but even then, I have been regularly using laptop computers since the early 1990s, so I can easily get used to not having a Touch Bar again.

bringing back the sd slot is such a stupid idea. for professional cameras, plenty of them use CFAST cards and a lot of them are moving over to USB-C SSDs. have you seen the cost and max size of high performing SD cards to record 4k/6k/8k ProRes RAW/Blackmagic RAW footage?

let's move on from SD. Apple was right to remove them. rather have an extra USB4/Thunderbolt 4 port.

this is one of those situations where Apple should tell everyone to shut up and be glad they're removing the Touch Bar at least.
Nah, SD is always coming back. Even recently released cameras like the a7s III or the blackmagic pocket 6k pro have sd-slots. To get the fastest possible write speed, you'll need faster cards like Xd, Cfast,... but over the last decades, SD has always cought up after a while.

Tit’s is not like Apple just removed them yesterday. I can understand SD card slot, but HDMI?
I know this is an inadvertent typo, but I just have to say:

"OMG, the next Apple Silicone models will have tits? Awesome! All of the lonely people in their parent's basement will love this feature." :D

The heck with improved performance and more ports, this is what will drive increased adoption of Apple Silicon Macs!

Apple really has its copy machines on. Folding phones, AR glasses, cars, copying PC laptops...play it safe Apple.

SD card slot and HDMI port are nice.

But I still hear people complain about missing the USB-A port... particularly when someone hands them a flash drive...

I wonder... between SD card slot and USB-A port... which is missed more?
My PC laptops have all the ports. It's quite nice. Nothing wrong with that. USB A port is handy for all the peripherals out there that still are USB A.

When is the last time Apple brought back ports it took away? And if the Touch Bar goes away does Apple say nothing about it? Just pretend like it was never there?

I actually think there is an issue with the Apple chips and Thunderbolt. This is going to end up like the mini I think where you NEED to use HDMI for one external screen.

I think so too. They only have two thunderbolt so they bring back magsafe, hdmi and sd-slot to cover at least something. I don't see any other reason to go back to these ports.
