It'll help music people. Photography world moved on from SD if we ever used it. CFExpress is the current format and before that we had XQD, CFast, CF.
Not everyone is a professional or semi professional photographer or videographer that uses the latest technology. I still use canon and nikon dslr cameras that take normal SD cards. I also use Go Pro type video cameras that use standard SD cards and therefore I am of the opinion there are millions more like me across the globe who would ditch their windows SD card supported laptop for an upto date SD card supported macbook.

I really hope this news is true. Anyone who has to give presentations outside of their homes will appreciate the return of the HDMI slot. It will also be convenient to be able to use the SD card slot sometimes for a backup of my DSLR. But even better, it allows for a cheap additional storage for movies etc. while on the go. This is a big thing considering how much Apple charges for SSD space.

If you are not a professional or semi-professional and you are using SD cards then just wirelessly transfer or plug the camera directly into the laptop. SD cards are so slow that there is no benefit of plugging them in directly, even when there was a build in reader in the old MacBooks it was faster using an external reader.

CF Express A are 3x faster than the fastest SD card and type B cards are 5x faster. They also hook directly into PCIe lanes so it is a nice direct interface and these cards are only getting faster.

I have no issue with putting SD slots on the MBA. But the MBP if it has such as slot it should be CF Express B.

Disagreed. The MacBook Air design was iconic and became very popular. The only way for PC laptop manufacturers to copy the design was to also remove the DVD drive from their product too. That accelerated the death of drives.

I'm sure internet and storage had something to do with it, but you can't say Apple didn't play a role in ACCELERATING the death of the DVD drive.
Your account does not correlate with reality, it is just fanboyism.

I can credit Apple for many great things, but not this one. Their market share was just too small in too many countries.

I don't get the hate on the touch bar. It does add functionality over the f keys, especially after they added the esc key. Sure, no feedback, but you can add stuff you use frequently. I miss it when I go back to my older MacBook Pro and the sound and screen brightness controls are smoother with the TB. I get the price argument, but it does add functionality.

I guess any port some people use is a good addition for them, but my PC workstation has 2 dongles for my 2 displays and it's a big, heavy tower - a lot of PCs use dongles actually. Most photographers carry card readers around, it's not a mac thing. What if your laptop breaks or something? why would you rely on a built in card reader in a laptop? and why would you not have a sturdier one at home for all types of cards?

I don't think people that need a laptop would avoid buying one just because it doesn't have a certain port if they can just use an adapter. Or even the TB, yes a lot of us just look down at the keyboard from time to time, it's fine. Over the years I needed ethernet, VGA and CF, no laptop had all of them and no desktop for that matter.

SD slot in a pro laptop instead of CF Express?? So it is the MacBook Consumer now?
In a way, yes…

Even most professional users are not professional photographers, and even the latter are not all on CF Express yet.

So let's assume that 2/3 of the MacBook Pro sales are professionals, and that of those 10% are photographers, and half of them are already on CF Express… all rather lofty assumptions, and you end up with roughly 3% of users needing CF Express.

Compared to the amount of people who have drones, GoPros etc. and other SD-Card devices it's clear that this is a minority for years to come.

Please make one last Intel MBP like this, Apple! I dont want my next laptop to be Windows, but it is looking more and more like it will be. I just can't move to M1 yet. Still so much that won't run on that processor. 😥

People with drones and GoPro's can plug their devices right into the USB-C port or again, put SD on the MBA and let consumers buy that. Apple have a pro and non-pro line, let pros have our CF Express slot and non-pro's have SD slots.

I've usually had MacBook Pros...Right now running a 2020 intel MacBook Air... I am debating whether to wait for this 14" model (which I would spec with the base stats, but with whatever it takes upgrade RAM to 32G) or just go ahead and get the current MacBook Air M1. The M1 would probably more than serve my needs; just wondering if the MacBook Pro would be more future proof...

2 steps forward 1 back. They are going to label the HDMI port and SD card as the best thing since sliced bread. They should keep the Touch Bar and find new and useful ways to use it, MS apps use it better than any apple app.

Future proof? You’re looking to upgrade a computer that’s less than a year old.

SD card should never have been removed, and I don't even use them.

HDMI should not return, seriously, how many people really need that? Just because 50 people here might, doesn't mean that 1% of MacBook buyers do.

they aren’t just bringing it back on a whim. Apple is a smart company and everything they do is intentional. There must be big demand to have SD card slots back. Every, single pro photographer/videographer I know uses SD cards, although many use card readers too.
It's not that I even disagree with what you're saying, but if Apple's a smart company and everything they do is intentional then why did they remove them in the first place, and why did they design the touchbar?
