I still say that there is a good chance the iPhone 12 mini evolves into the iPhone SE (3rd generation).

If the iPhone 11 doesn't evolve into the next SE instead then that's a possibility.

However, rumors at this point point to the 11 form factor as the next one tapped for SE duty. Just as there were folks saying the 8 was too big to become an SE, there will be similar claims about 11. But the SE was never created to satisfy a market for a small iPhone, it was created to be a cheap iPhone. And, in fact, a larger screen might very well make it even more popular than it has been in its first two generations.

It seems to me that Apple made a decision to include a hardware feature for 2022 (maybe the under-screen Face ID) that would be difficult or impossible to fit into the mini size, and of course the comparatively low sales of the mini so far would have made that an easy decision. But it leaves the possibility open that Apple will return to a smaller form factor in a later generation, when they are able to shrink the respective components, or when they switch to a different technology once again.

As for SE = small, I think that’s a misconception. The SE models were always “former mainstream form factor with updated internals”, and only incidentally “small phone”. It’s obvious to me that a future SE won’t be a mini (unfortunately).

I have my doubts, because given the physical size of the iPhone 11, it's too close to that of the current iPhone 12/12 Pro models. The next iPhone SE should be smaller than the regular iPhone models, and the iPhone 12 mini size is perfect.

Dang. Got my wife on the iPhone Upgrade Program with the Mini this year. Was just going to keep her phone upgraded moving forward since the SE is no longer small. It was really neat to have a flagship iPhone with great cameras, OLED and 5G at such a small size for her. Guess she’ll just have to hold onto the iPhone 13 Mini as long as it’s supported. Maybe by then her hands will grow larger or women’s fashion will change the pocket sizes to finally be larger. It hasn’t happened so far but you never know.

Yes, but macrumors must have a personal vendetta against the mini.
Sure, everything is a conspiracy. You keep thinking that. MacRumors will keep writing the news.

Sure, I'll just tell my hands to get with the times too.

Are you aware that some people use their phones as actual mobile devices, not movie theaters for their sofas?
Movie theatre for my sofa? WTF?!?! 6.7” is t a movie theatre sized screen unless you hail from Lilliput.

I use my XR as an actual mobile device. All day long. The size is not an issue.

Have you noticed the tone of some of the people posting comments here? You might not be saying that the minority isn't important, which is a good thing, but some people here sure are implying that. I don't get why some people are so ecstatic about the mini being scrapped when its continued existence doesn't affect them whatsoever.
Because for the past 3 years (since at least the iPhone X) the small phone crowd has been crying, whining, threatening and condescending about the need for a replacement for the 5/5s/SE size as even a 5.8” screen was simply too large for their precious sensibilities. Several attempts at reasoning were made along with explanations of market realities to no avail. The rest of us were informed of our foolishness and that if Apple built it, it would sell in droves and we should all take that as the gospel.

Fast forward to now and Apple apparently heard the wailing and gnashing of teeth and disgorged the iPhone 12 mini. It has sold, but no here near what the small phone zealots insisted it would. And so various excuses were made about too much money (the Go To), not small enough (the Deflection), the pandemic (the Apocalypse) and the lack of a Pro model (the Upsell). No acknowledgement of what the rest of us already knew. Just denial of the harsh reality.

While I take no glee in the mini being cancelled/discontinued, the inability of certain people to accept reality and say they were wrong being validated by the aforementioned harsh reality has been like a hammer upside their head, which has a certain satisfying charm to it as it then validated the rest of us who tried to be reasonable in our opines and demeanor.

I think a lot of people who say they want small iPhones just look at the screen size and don't consider that devices have less bezels these days (SE is the exception here, sadly.) The iPhone 12 isn't really that big for most people.

Have you met one person outside of an Apple fan website that asked for a smaller iPhone ?

Smaller than iPhone X? No one
Didn’t realize there were tens of millions of people on an “Apple fan website” ordering the mini. Or maybe you’re implying all the people on the Apple fan website ordered multiple each to boost the numbers? I don’t know, could you clarify your fantasy for us?

This anti-small phone mindset. What does it matter if Apple produce a small phone? Does it offend you? Were you once mugged by a small phone whilst walking down a dark alley? You’re not being forced to buy it!
It‘s not just an anti-small phone mindset. It’s anti- “anything that’s not my preference.” That’s why any time there’s an article that talks about Android or Windows here, so many people are nothing but negative. People can’t just be happy with their own choices. They need everything else to fail to feel validated in their decisions.

I can‘t imagine being such an unhappy person that I get joy from another phone not selling well.

All I know is that a iPad mini sized 8-9” iPhone pro maxxx would get my money! I held a mini and it is way to tiny!

Who are these people claiming the mini isn’t selling as expected? It’s 6% of all iPhone sales. Apple only knows what percentage they expected. And apple knows how many sales they expected to have list if the mini wasn’t there. Lots of those 6% wouldn’t have bought anything if the mini wasn’t for sale. And we don’t know how many went to a store to buy a mini - and bought a bigger phone instead, also people who wouldn’t have come to the store if the mini wasn’t there.

So I doubt very much that there will be no small iPhone 13.

Yeah, 6% is still a good amount of people. I believe the rumor is that there will be an iPhone 13 Mini, but no iPhone 14 Mini, or whatever it would be called.

It’s probably more that Apple simply didn't have enough time to change this year's flagship lineup to reflect poor/weak iPhone Mini sales.

It’s just the reality when you are dealing with the scale that Apple operates at and everything has to be planned to far in advance to avoid bottlenecks.

I wouldn’t read too much into it.

Good. No point putting out a model that sells poorly. The mini is a failure! If people want a small phone they can just get an SE.
Imagine being happy about something that people like going away just because you don’t need it. It’s the 8th best selling smartphone model. Only two Android models sell better. Millions of people have bought them. That’s not a failure.

Personally, I think Apple is misinterpreting the poor sales as a lack of interest in a smaller phone. Sure, it didn't sell well. But... they released the 2nd gen SE months beforehand (I imagine a lot of folks who prefer smaller phones pounced on this, thereby cannibalizing some sales. Anecdotally, I know that's what my dad did.). They launched it AFTER the "regular sized" models (folks who just want to be ahead of the tech curve and get the latest and greatest might have chosen those because they could get them sooner). Also, I frequent tech forums, and I have seen a ton of folks say things like, "I'd get it, but I want better battery life." Or, "I'd get it, but I want the best camera." Or both. For me, it's absolutely that combo. I got a 12 Pro, but I'm a camera junky. I want that third lens. Point being, I do think there's a market for it; they just need to make it comparable to other models and sell it on different sales cycles than the SE brand. Now, it seems like they're thinking there isn't a market for both to coexist, and I'm bummed. I'd commit to a mini-Pro for life if they'd sell one. I'm so done with giant toasters in my pockets.
Great post! Sounds like something I could have written, on all points.
