The fundamental problem with the iPad is lack of real competition. Apple could probably take…3 years off from updating and still lead the industry? Maybe more? They are certainly not being pushed to innovate, other than against themselves and their other products.
It still strikes me somewhat of a chicken and egg issue.

I suspect Apple is still working through a pandemic-driven boom. Many people bought iPads during covid-19 period (partly for work, but mostly for their children as schools moved online). My 2018 iPad Pro is still receiving software updates. It's not surprising that as more people hold on to their iPads, fewer are currently in the market for a new one.

This may also explain why there aren't any new iPads this year. It could be Apple setting the stage for a more significant iPad refresh next year (or it may not). Maybe they are trying to time it with an anticipated wave of new iPad upgraders?

Should I just get a mac studio/mac mini or wait for the mythical iMac Pro? I have an ageing 2015 iMac 27 inch. I don't want a 24 inch iMac and I don't really want a mac studio or mini either but how long must I wait for the 27 inch iMac/iMac Pro?
I just got a MacBook Pro 14inch M2 Pro and I am coming from almost 8-year old iMac 27 inch (late 2015 model). I work in video production. It takes a couple of days getting used to, but the machine is amazing and the screen is more than enough, considering its thin bezels and the portability - it’s a win.

I am thinking of it too. Maybe pair it with a monitor for desktop experience.

A potential negative effect of Apple sitting on its M3 chip generation and releasing products in 2024 is they will have yielded the leading edge. Intel has announced Thunderbolt 5 and PC products with the Barlow Ridge TB5 bridge will be in the marketplace in early 2024, but Apple's M3 is unlikely to include this important technology.

There is definitely some marketing (planned obsolescence) in Apple's decision to keep base products low on storage and memory.
And SSD speeds. I compared the SSD speeds on M2 line MacBook Pros (512 vs 1TB) and the 1TB speeds are double of those of the base model. Apparently it’s even worse with the Airs. Obviously I wasn’t even planning to get the 512 as I need more storage, but it’s exceptionally annoying how they do this even with the Pro line.

The Macbook Pros are too expensive for the customers to receive newer versions in every year. It could be causes huge depreciation for us.
Most of us MBP users won’t even think of upgrading every other year 😂 these machines work for a while and are very good for a long time.

Why on earth do you need 3??
I know, but now I need 3 lately.
Two MacBooks are sleeping now but last night I had the baseball game on one, sound off.
the other one was being used for tv while the third was backing up an older iPad after reinstating music.

Another reason is I dont need to move my main one downstairs or on the porch
for silly things like listen to music or answer phone calls that never arrive.

hopefully today will be a one MacBook day because this gets tiring!

Apple moved to their own silicon and we still have an iMac that looks like it’s going to go over 1,000 days without an update

Unless a component dies, of course. My RAM died in my MacBook Air and that was the machine in the trash

And if they had updated it, people here would complain that the M2 wasn't a substantial enough upgrade and demand the M3 now!
People would surely be less annoyed with some kind of stop-gap? Personally I don't need a gigantic iPad, so won't be buying an unupgradable iMac anyway.

They don’t have to release half backed products. Simply making storage and memory prices less ludicrous would help them correct the stale in sales
Sure. The configurations are already behind the curve - its 2023 and nothing (apart from maybe the cheapest MBA) should be shipping with 8GB RAM/256 GB SSD, and nothing with "pro" in the name should be shipplng with less than 32GB/1TB. RAM and SSD just isn't that expensive...

...but that just involves bumping the default configurations and issuing a press release, not trying to come out with some stop-gap and present it as a major new model.

iMac is not even a gigantic iPad, the iPad has a built-in battery (and touch screen). The iMac (and the Mini) need to stay plugged in all the time, or they crash. Some customers apparently think a thick power cord gives better performance, but that hasn’t been true since the M1.

Please when will we get a modern system with a battery and a separate (upgradable) CPU and (upgradable) screen.

You could probably do all that with one MBP and an external monitor. Obviously you couldn't back stuff up while being on the go, but if you time it right, you can schedule those tasks in when you're at your desk. It still useful to have 1 backup computer, but three might be excessive. ;)

To be fair, I am a hard core minimalist when it comes to things. That being said I was going to ditch my gaming PC and just casually game on my MBP, but I kind of like having two separate machines for that. While playing it's nice to be able to use the MBP to look up stuff on a separate machine and not having to alt(comand)+tab out.

I digress, but I too like to watch multiple things at once. I wish there was a way you could pan the audio of one video to the left, and the other to the right airpod so you can use the "cocktail effect" to pay attention to whichever video you want.

Apple is unlikely to release any new Macs or iPads for the remainder of 2023, according to a series of predictions shared in recent weeks by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Macs

Last month, Kuo said Apple was unlikely to release any new MacBooks with the M3 chip this year. All existing MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are equipped with M2 series chips, so any new models would presumably be equipped with M3 chips, which effectively means that Kuo does not expect any new MacBooks at all for the rest of 2023.

Earlier this week, Kuo added that the 24-inch iMac would be updated next in 2024, ruling out an update to the all-in-one desktop computer this year. All other desktop Macs, including the Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro, were already updated in 2023 and are highly unlikely to be updated again until 2024 or later.

iPads

Last month, Kuo said Apple was unlikely to release any new iPad models before the end of 2023.

Apple has yet to release any new iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, or entry-level iPad models this year. If that trend continues for the remainder of 2023 as expected, it would be the first calendar year with no new iPads released in the device's 13-year history.

This didnt age well

Lol. Kuo is good at supply chain analysis but it is easy for him to miss (his accuracy is less than 80%). Gurman uses inside sources and other signals and is accurate a lot more of the time. Big Kuo miss and big Gurman hit here.

Can't wait to see you on monday :)

Still don't think there will be an M3. If there is then Apple were very silly to release a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M2 a mere months ago. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 13" MacBook Pro get it first, the base processor, then the Airs to follow, but still the M3 Pro and Max won't be until next year. I'll delete my account if there is any sign of a M3 Pro/Max MacBook Pro on Monday.

Gurman knows what he gets told 2 days before the entire world finds out. Anything else is absolute nonsense from him.
