The original iPad Pro had lightning connector.

Yep, but with the 2018 Pro when they introduced USB-C they specifically limited it to "Pro" and talked about it being a conscious decision to leave it out of non-Pro devices such as the new Air and mini5

If the rumoured lack of USB-C is true and there's an iPhone with a "Pro" name then it's a massive failure by Apple.

When they launched the iPad Pro they made it very clear "Pro" was associated with USB-C. If you were deep into lightning then it wasn't a problem as there were non-Pro iPads too.

So if they've abandoned that idea then they've basically wasted an entire year of transition. iPhone Pro with USB-C and non-Pro iPhone with lightning would have covered all the bases.

Then again, this is already a wasted year because of the pointless argument Apple got into with Qualcomm over "excessive" $7 fees per $1000+ device before grovelling for forgiveness. 2019 will still use the crippled Intel modems because Tim's supply chain is too inflexible to switch to Qualcomm already.

So maybe Apple really have just written off 2019 entirely so they can double down on 2020; Qualcomm modems, reverse wireless charging, USB-C, new design, etc.

Well the original iPad Pros didn't have USB-C. Tags like "pro" is just another name and is essentially meaningless.

"Apple haters" = people comparing Apple to the rest of the industry rather than fawning over the Apple Inc. product just because of the logo?
Oh vay. I guess an Apple fan is one that objectively compares Apple to the rest of the industry and sees the work and innovation that go into the company’s products.
Reality is pretty much everyone who signed up for an account on here loved Apple at some point, but Apple's own greed and lack of innovation while raising prices has driven those customers away.
Similar to Samsung pricing or the pricing of the iPhone 1 by jobs?

Qualcomm was losing billions. They needed to settle. So not sure who groveled.

USB C for me us not the answer to iPhone success although others think differently.

Well Apple is giving Qualcomm over $4.5 billion as part of the settlement so that's a clue to the direction of grovelling

I think that "20 improvements" is a huge hyperbole of the reality, it really was underwhelming - first time in almost a decade I didn't upgrade my phone annually.

B*llsh*t. X to XS (not speaking about Max) was the most minimal upgrade in the history of iPhone. Even the side by side comparison between the technical specifications speaks for itself.

Well here’s my list, I see @0989382 already made a pretty good dent in it. Maybe I’ve forgotten something, not sure:

4GB RAM (increased from 3GB), better camera with a new sensor, new image signal processor, various improved picture and video modes, better display, improved sound, IP68 water resistance (vs. IP67), dual SIM capability, faster FaceID, faster wireless charging, up to 15% faster CPU, up to 50% faster GPU and the machine learning neural engine co-processor goes from 2-core/600 billion operations per second to an amazing 8-core/5 trillion ops/sec—over 7x faster.

Also: stronger glass, better battery life, stereo video recording via four microphones, more frequency bands, including T-Mobile's 600 MHz LTE Band 71, and a faster “gigabit class” cellular radio. (In tests on US cellular carriers, the average download speeds more than doubled and upload speeds increased by 50%.)

Some will upgrade just for the gold color lol, and a 512GB SKU is now available as well, for those who need half a terabyte of storage on their phone. For those who miss the Plus size, for only an extra $100(!) they can get the XS Max.

Almost no aspect of the X feature set was left untouched; it’s really quite amazing. It was the best iPhone Apple ever built, until the iPhone 11 is introduced tomorrow.

Actually, somewhere earlier in the thread there was a picture of details of the new iPhones in Chinese. If that's anything to go by, some of the new phones may have Two-way wireless charging.

Absolutely agree. It also highlights the lack of any consistency or continuity within their marketing division. Skipping the 7S, skipping the 8S, skipping the 9, going with XS, replacing Plus with Max, going from C to R (could have easily been called the XC) -- I hope you can appreciate the hilarity of the situation.

It seems as if those "analysts" just take guesses all the time. So many features mentioned before now not happening?

Powershare needs a second coil. Perhaps Tim is pulling it from the hardware design at the last minute (meaning some time ago, not tonight) as a cost-saving measure, possibly to help absorb the cost of Trump's tariffs without a price hike and then they'll add it to the next iPhone (by which time the tariffs are hopefully ended)

MY PREDICTION:
  • No USB-C: Because Apple has to ride that accessory gravy train as long as possible.
  • No fast charging included: See above
  • No 2-way wireless charging: Apple was last to wireless, and last they will remain.
  • Price hike: Because of the "trade war". Nothing to do with Apple penny pinching, trust us.
  • A better camera: Development has to go somewhere.
  • Video Bokeh: Or some more computerised photography feature that can ONLY be done on their new flagship.
  • A new chip: That is so fast that it's criminal its in a phone. Everyday use effects? Very little. But Marketing $$$.
  • Notch: Is as Apple as the home button. So it's here to stay.
  • Nothing else because its Tim Cooks Apple

I was checking out my friends Huawei 3e Nova the other day. Damn cool. It was like actually wow, cool camera. Zippy etc. And its like, I dunno, 1/6th the price of an iPhone? Don't get me wrong I'm an Apple fanboy, but the iPhone is, to be honest, unexciting, expensive, and it seems to trail other phones ideas now, not introduce them. Other manufacturers have been doing triple cameras already - this camera is old news before it even gets released. They'll be going on about how good it is for AR, when honestly, no one cares. I don't get Apples plan for the iPhone anymore, they don't seem to have one. After playing with that 3e, I'm wondering why i don't just grab one of those.

This might help shed some light on the whole naming trend with the iPhones. It's nowhere near as random or as haphazard as you make it out to be, though I admit there is probably no right approach to this.

Absolutely nailed it. I was thinking that some of the points I made were actually 'groupings' of genuinely useful and new features within them. The processor alone, the camera spec etc.. Well done.

Looks like @Khedron had already accepted the silly exaggeration he / the others were making about the XS being a 'poor upgrade' as he stopped replying. These guys will complain regardless of what Apple does. Still, the sales and performance figures of Apple are much more valuable than their opinions! lol

Can't wait to see what's announced tonight. I find myself thinking every year 'how can Apple improve on that?!'... But they always do.

I didn't stop relaying, I just accept there is an irreconcilable difference of opinions when one side defines "new gold colour" as an "upgrade" for a $1000+ phone
