This is too funny. The literally just released the updated version and will smack you with the updated updated version.

Yeah, the only issue could be comfort after wearing them for a while - the current design are great in that they don’t place any pressure on the inside of your ear, so they can be worn just about all day.
Unless Apple invents some as yet unheard of tech, the current design won't work. Noise cancellation can't work without a sound seal. The microphones that enable noise cancellation can't account for sound bleed inherent in AirPods. If you're wearing Bose QC35's and enable noise cancelling, you're going to have a quiet experience. If you slightly lift the one of the earcups and break the sound seal, outside noise will enter.

Comfort is going to be an issue with any noise cancelling headphones. Some are better than others at mitigating discomfort. QC35's are known for their wear-time comfort. Sony's XM3's, a little less comfortable according to some reviews.

Even though MCK has a good track record for new Apple products, this one feels a lot like an easy guesstimate anyone could make. It’s widely known that the AirPods have been a challenge to manufacture, so you know Apple has been doing what they can to re-design for efficiency sake, just to increase yield and allow for wider penetration into the market. Also, knowing that they’ve been able to achieve long battery life in their soon to be released Beats buds, you have to think they’re working on reducing the electronics in order to minimize battery drain and increase battery size to up the listening time. Whether it will be in a new form factor or not is the only thing that is an unknown.

Just this past weekend, I remember thinking of how popular the AirPods are, after seeing a lot of people wearing them in a very short period of time as I was walking the dogs around a park in Chicago. I get the attraction - they’re so easy to use, don’t require you to plug your ear canals with in-ear, pressure altering, rubber tipped ear buds.

in the 00's/jobs era.. new design = same price
in the 10's.. new design = higher price, same design slightly higher price.

Announced in October, coming "this spring", shipping 6/20. I know, I know, there will be 79 more of this post. Never claimed to be original;)

New design based on Apple's In-Ear Headphones would make sense for a noise cancellation version. That would not be a bad thing at all.

It's the main thing that made me return them. I literally couldn't hear the music over the subway noise. So, I bought some $23 Taotronics until such time that Apple deigns to catch up to everyone else. Pretty design, poor function.

This strategy of releasing dozens of more expensive variants of a product after it becomes successful is plain annoying. It just shows how poor sighted they’ve become. Their product lineup is such a mess.
Dozens of more expensive variants? Don’t you think that’s just a slight exaggeration for one or two models every year or two?

One already at the same price this year, one at the same price later this year or maybe early next year. That next model may be functionally identical to the current AirPods 2, just with an updated internal assembly. Separately, there will be a new model, maybe with noise cancelling which is something a lot of people have been wanting, but a new design and new features (besides just Hey Siri). Yes, it’ll be more expensive, but you don’t have to buy it if it doesn’t fit in your budget.

The lineup is fine, you’re just being ridiculous.

How about creating an air pod that fits people’s ears? That would be a step in the right direction.
"He estimates AirPods shipments will reach 52 million units in 2019"

You don't hit these numbers if an ear-based product doesn't fit in customers' ears. You should get your ears checked ;-)

Wait, what? Reduced cost but will cost us more? I think it will come out early next year unless it comes out for the holiday.

Hopefully the newer design has in-ear tips because I have to reapply dermal adhesive strips every 1-2 weeks to keep them in my ears and that can get a little bit gross after a while. That would also provide better noise isolation and use lower volume. Some refinements to sound quality would also be welcome. It's not bad, but could be better, though I'm no audiophile. Perhaps they could also update the current design to make the stems extend less and maybe make them slightly thicker to keep the same battery life. I also think that space gray or black colorways would be welcome.
