Not a chance in hell Apple replaces Lightning on the iPad. It doesn't make sense: if I were traveling with all updated Apple products I would need a Lightning cable for my iPhone and a USB-C cable for my iPad. Why?!
[doublepost=1536590037][/doublepost]

Don't forget all the Apple accessories have Lightning ports: Magic Mouse/Keyboard, AirPods, Beats, etc. It makes no sense to switch the iPad to USB-C.

They also all charge wirelessly, which we're about to see. Mac and iPad Pro would share the same power connector, and we don't know for sure what the new wireless AirPod charger will use. Beats uses microusb on all but one or two models. It's already a mixed mess and iPad would fit right in. This isn't to say I think it's going to happen but I wouldn't completely count it out because it does make sense. Especially if all new accessories are announced.

Also do not discount the iPad Pro potentially having two ports.

With the rumored naming conventions, I wouldnt be shocked with all these crazy changes. They probably have a 5 year plan.

What are the chances that the small hole on the side scan the finger for glucose measurement?

Right, because Apple has never, ever, forced people to buy a $20 dongle or new cable to use their old accessories. /s

Anyway, the way the current Pencil charges is ludicrous - sticking out from the iPad and just asking to be snapped off (mechanics 101 - the lever). Wasn't there a rumour that they're re-designing the "smart connector"? A Pencil that snaps magnetically on to the smart connector for charging and storage would make more sense.
You run the chance of Ive getting overworked by your suggestions.

"In addition to Face ID support, we expect the new iPad Pro models' main upgrade to include replacing Lightning with a USB-C interface"
nice to know but why 2 days before the event, we still don't know if face id will work in landscape mode with these new Ipads o_O

I understand your frustration but I think this is unavoidable. Sooner or later lightning cables are going to have to be phased out and replaced with something that can provide faster transfer speeds and/or recharge times. Whether Apple does it now or 2 years from now, there will be a transition period where users with multiple Apple products will need to carry multiple chargers.

I think the recharge speeds are enough to justify beginning that transition phase now. The bright side is the sooner it starts the sooner we can get back to carrying a single charger when we travel. My biggest question when the iPhones eventually go to USB-C is if there will be a cable to allow me to keep using Apple CarPlay on my Elantra.

All true, DoctorTech.

But you miss an important difference [to Apple].

Whereas Lightning cables are all active and include chips at both ends (negotiation, auto-configuration, transcoding, ...), the USB cable, does not, whereby some USB cables function either as pass-thru (passive), or reshapers (active).

To Apple, this distinction on iPhones allows them to relocate technology outside the casing, where it has the most impact on internal component counts.

That may explain the difference.

So, if I understand this....not sure that I do, the new low cost MacBook will not be a 13in refreshed MacBook Air. Instead, as some have suspected all along, the "new" low priced MacBook will simply be a lower price lower spec 12in rMB with 128GB storage sold at $1,000. Perhaps, it won't have touch ID, and the more expensive rMB will be an up-sell product with up to date specs, 256GB storage and touch ID. In other words, Apple will basically give the current rMB a spec bump plus touch ID and continue to sell it for $1299. The line-up would then be consistent with the iPad:

iPad and iPad Pro
MacBook and MacBook Pro

The consumer for an entry level everyday laptop (~$1,000 or less) would then face an interesting choice: They could buy the lower spec rMB without touch ID, or they could buy an iPad Pro with (reportedly) Face ID, New "bezeless" design, latest updated mobile processor, USB-C, etc.. This will probably continue to push more people toward Tablets, which seems to be Apples strategy. Let's face it, iPad and iOS is getting a lot more development and attention from Apple than their traditional computing platform. Some may disagree with this strategy, but Apple must see a trend here that they want to follow.

Landscape sure, but will FaceID work in portrait?

Do you think Apple makes any sense at all recently? Look at this travel package:

  • MacBook: USB-C to USB-C
  • Previous gen iPhone as work phone: USB-A to Lightning
  • iPhone XS: USB-C to Lightning
  • iPad: USB-A to Lightning
  • Apple Watch: USB-A to wireless charging puck
  • AirPods: USB-A to Lightning
  • Apple pencil: Lightning port

Think about charging all these devices at night in a hotel room and what kind of mess that would be cable and adapter wise! At least moving one more device to USB-C is slowly getting to a standard. The MacBook and iPad are on a similar path, so for them to share the same I/O would make sense.
That’s what AirPower was about - if it existed

I agree. Apple's product line seems to be getting messy. Steve simplified it. And it feels like it's getting complex again with so many different products, etc. each a little different from the other. Visiting Apple's web site now reminds me of visiting Dell's with so many similar products to chose from.
I prefer the Xs over the X like I preferred the Performa 475 over the 450 though

After reading this, my guess is that little "speaker" dot in between the crown and the button on the S4 leaked image might actually be a sensor (with one on the other side as well) you will have to touch with your non-watch hand to complete the circuit for EKG monitoring.

It looks recessed, though. Since the new side button is now static, I’m guessing they’d just use that.

USB-C ipad pros. Cool.

If this comes to be, hopefully the USB-C connectors are more durable than lightning. Am I the only one for whom lightning connectors wear away, where black stripes appear at the copper contacts, either from dirt in the iPhone/iPad jack and/or from general wear & tear, rendering lightning cables to be unusable after just 4-5 months of regular use?

So now my Apple Pencil is going to need a usb-c converter so it will then have 3 tiny plastic things that are easy to lose?

You forgot a few bullets for dongles!

Not sure why Apple needs to move on to "standardized" ports. Their Lightning ports are more than capable, and if you're in the Apple ecosystem, that is your standard anyways. So I'm hoping that rumor is really just giving use USB C power bricks instead of changing the ports. It really is nice traveling with only a Lightning cable. But here's the kicker. Apple will get around that fragmentation problem by... wait for it... dongles... you know that is what they'll do if they switch out the iPad Pro ports and anything else Lightning to USB-C. I really feel that Lightning cables just are built better, you don't worry much about bending pins inside like you would on USB-C. I can see the cost thing being an issue, but just look at how many times Best Buy puts their Insignia cables for 2$. You can get some decent Lightning cables for cheap, if not cheaper than USB-C cables from reputable vendors (unlike gambling on Amazon with a knock off). Really hope they keep lightning, but I see a dongle-full future.

Totally agree about Lightning vs USB-C. It's annoying how Apple charges for MFi, but sooooo helpful when looking for a reliable cable. You know what you're getting when buying Lightning, vs the crapshoot of USB-C and the various standards/capabilities. I also like the appearance and stability of the Lightning connector way more than USB-C.

Lightning is capable of faster charging but Apple doesn't want to support it, probably because of heat issues and battery life. There is currently no advantage that USB-C has over Lightning.

I don't understand why people are so gung-ho about USB-C.
USB-C is good Android devices compared to microUSB, but it's still annoying. It's quite big for a "new" port (actually bigger than micro USB), and its "female" end on the device still have a flat piece inside the jack. Like a "hermaphrodite" port. This is really annoying, especially on waterproof phones like Samsung. Trying to dry out the port becomes a chore.

As a connector, lightning is still superior. Not only it has smaller footprint than USB-C, there's no extra pieces inside the port on the device. Purely male to female connection.

The only problem people have is that Apple bundles lightning to USB-A cable for their iDevices, while most of their laptops have gone USB-C only. Apple just need to switch the USB-A adaptor and cable to USB-C adaptor and lightning to USB-C cable. That would solve the problem for many people.

ECG makes the Series 4 an instant buy for me. Time to prepare to sell my Series 2.
I was going to say.. I would love to keep my series 1 on my bedside charger during the day and switch it out at night to get night time sleep monitoring... but if the Series 4 has sleep tracking and two day battery life, well, no need to have two watches!
