4.7 Would be Perfect , I made the switch from iPhone 5 to Nexus yes few compromises ( nothing I can't live without), decided to give 5S a shot yes I missed the build quality and the sharp apps/camera, but at the end of the day the screen felt too small and Retina is not a strong selling point to me anymore so the 5S went on Sale on macrumors marketplace, 4.7 and I won't hesitate to switch back :D

Stick with the Nexus 5 unless they massively improve iOS. Android is so much more efficient to use now with a much more advanced and simple notification pulldown is vs. apple's. iOS might be a bit easier and intuitive to pick up and use but that's even slipped a bit with a slightly more confusing UI design.

I was a die hard iphone user for 4+ years and own a mac so I hope ios returns to glory but it's going to take a while to fix what Ive did to iOS. Bring back Jobs Jr. aka Forstall.

Bigger is better I guess.

I will go with the smaller of the two myself.

If it's a bigger (no bezel) screen on the same sized case, I'd be all for it.

Case makers would hate it. So Apple should also build a phone that doesn't need a case.

...perfect time for UI makeover

Summary: I hope a larger iPhone will ship with an iOS that is refreshed with better navigation and access to real time updates.

Seeing the larger form factor just reminds me of how much of the Apple mobile experience is synonymous with the UI ... an ironic consequence for having a minimalist, near perfect, hardware design aesthetic ... if the next iPhone gets more real estate it would be "kicking" if they would also give us a better UI experience.

However, I'm fully preparing myself for a complete let down here since Apple seems stubbornly committed to the current, highly rigid "page after page of square tiles" navigational flow. I would like to see them keep it but tweak it to reduce the "travel time" necessary to arrive at your favorite apps / info. ...to support the ability to have your real time info front and center....or at least closer-by.

A bigger screen, IMO, would be a great canvas to introduce these kind of tweaks.

I'd like a larger screen, but only of it's supported by some great software that can make use of it. Like a great drawing / diagraming tool. Galaxy Note has come close to that with it's Note app but still falls short of being perfect.

For certain demographics, bigger IS better

For those with youth on their side, a smaller phone may be perfect because your eyes can see small things clearly BUT for those in the worldwide population over the age of say, 45 or 50, a larger screen would be great. As one with poor eyesight, I am seriously considering dropping my iP5 and go to the new Samsung. If Apple FINALLY does come out with a 5.5 screen, well they won't loose a customer.
And one of my pet peeves in web site design is the inability to make text larger and more readable. So many sites now force you to deal with a small default text size and you are cannot enlarge the text nor screen size with a 2 finger expand
gesture.

I'm still rockin a 4S. This is my upgrade year, just to keep up with the features. Screen size only concerns me by way of the physical dimensions of the device. I really like the smallness of the 4S. I can go larger, but I'd prefer not dramatically larger. I can't hold the silly Samsung slabs. But I guess I will get whatever smallest iteration Apple releases. All the apps are so integrated into my life that it'd be hard to jump ship, not that I want to. Just keep it ultra-portable, Apple.

I'm more excited about the fitness options that will most likely be coming. I already miss out on some functionality by not having the motion co-processor.

This is a very subjective article. So many people are wanting to believe:
1. Apple will make a phablet
2. People will actually buy Apple phablets en mass.

Point 2 is probably true as people buy anything Apple. But Point 1 is questionable. I hope Apple don't make phablets in the future. I'll be sad if they do. That means they will have to keep a 2nd proper sized phone always or I'd have issues. I want an iOS phone. But I don't buy a phablet. And if Apple make the mistake of not releasing new iPhones and only releasing new iPhablets, I probably try to make my current iPhone last till it dies.

I (and many others) want an iPhone. We do not want an iPhablet.

If you get the rumored 4.7" phone you will not have a phablet. 5.5"... debatable. Just as you will be sad, many others will be happy. Obviously there's a market for it, hence the Note. My contract is up later this year. 4.7" will put Apple in the mix for my phone (for the first time ever).

If they keep the 4" phone, good for those who like them. Adding a larger phone will just open up a possible additional revenue stream from those like me who view the iPhone size as a deficiency.

I agree....Apple, I hate to tell you this, but if the next iPhone is that big?

I'm out.

Not trying to be rude, but have you looked at what's happening in the Android/WP world? If you want a small screen, you're pretty much SOL.

I, for one, welcome our giant phone overlords.

What you view as a deficiency is just a bad product idea. There is a reason Apple have not made phablets until now. It's the same reason why Apple have never made a netbook. They are just bad at everything. Phablets are too small for a tablet and too large for a phone. Just because all the competition does something, does not automatically make it right.

Apple filled the "no Apple netbook" issue by making a product even better than a netbook everyone would want, the iPad. And I'm sure Apple will deal with the phablet issue the same way. Make a product or improve existing products so people want them even more than phablets.

Just pair it with a next-gen apple bluetooth earbud
Exactly. You could even keep the phone part on your belt or in your pocket and just use voice to answer and finish calls. People who work on phones all day would love this.

To what, really? Apple is one of the last few standing in the sub-4.5" screen category.

What you'll probably end up seeing is them getting rid of the 3.5" screen devices and having the 4" model and the 4.7" (or whatever in that range) sized model.

I don't know. Maybe somebody will buy Blackberry and the Q10 is still around then. I'd take that. Maybe there is something else. Maybe I'd just stockpile a few 5Ss.

I will not start walking around with anything bigger than the silly old 5 that I currently have. If I can't reach the corners with my thumb and if it doesn't fit into a shirt pocket it's useless.

I don't get what the benefits are supposed to be? Apple will not start adding more content. Look at the iPad. Content is the same in the two sizes available. There is no benefit in the larger iPad unless you have vision issues. Same real estate. And with that in mind smaller is better.

Cell phones used to shrink while battery life went up. Now we're doing the opposite.

You're missing the market that wants a bigger screen for more real-estate for the games.

Why?
there is absolutely tangible evidence that the market place loves larger screen phones.

If Apple were to add a 2nd phone to the lineup that is 4.7", as well as keep the 4" lineup for those who like the smaller, what harm does that do to you...

what it does, is give a viable larger screen option to those (like myself) who would love an iPhone, but cannot stand the 4" form factor.

this is a good thing for everyone.

However, I do agree, killing the 4" would be bad for Apple

It's mostly sales people, I have asked a few people I know that have big phones, why. They say I have hard time seeing, so the sales person told me to get this phone. I pull out my iPhone and show them that font is smaller on the bigger screen phones...

You can bet that Apple have already doing their market research on what size screen the phone buying public would like. If they release a phone with a bigger screen it will fly off the shelves and be in short supply for months

Older ppl

Yes, I would like a 4.5-4.5" screen but may I offer another reason? Older people. I know of quite a few that switched to a larger Android because its easier on their eyes - literally.
A larger iPhone would bring them back because they other thing they do with their phones is throw them against the wall due to the OS. :D

load of codswallop.

There is absolutely tangible benefits to larger screen real estate.

I have used devices ranging from 3.5 to 6" and there are absolutely benefits, other than just "eyesight" to the larger ones.

you got told a line by someone and bought it hook, line and sinker.

The biggest benefit to larger dimensions is the ability to use more space. you can fit more items on the display, that remain usable. Going to these super high pixel density screens is good and all, but your overall UI still is limited by the user input. Namely size of screen elements.

No matter what size screen you have, There is a certain minimum size element a button or item has to be for it to be usable. For example, If you have to have a button a minimum of 1" square to be usable, (these are all numbers made up for example purposes), and your screen width is only 3", you can put a maximum of 3 buttons. However, if your screen width is 4", you can now put 4 buttons.

This is the primary biggest benefit to the increase in screen real estate.

the eyesight thing is just a helpful sideaffect for us who need to squint at tiny text.
