This is stupid... I DONT WANT TO CARRY AN IPAD MINI IN MY POCKET!

One of the reasons I like iPhones is because they are sleek for a smart phone and fit nicely into my pocket. 5inch Samsung phones are bulky (no matter how thin they are) in pockets.

Hence - I guess my iPhone usage will end with 5s. At least I will be saving a ton of monthly costs of having an iPhone.

Come on Apple.... for phones - bigger is not always better.... leave the iPhone the size of a phone and the iPad mini the size of an iPad mini.

One day, people are going to making parodies of iPhone commercials like they did to Microsoft...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZrr7AZ9nCY

I can sort of agree with you. I always wanted the iPhone to be a 4.3" - 4.5" screen but that was when the pre-5/5S aspect ratios were being made.
I think that growing the iPhone to 5" w/ the current 16:9 ratio will make the iPhone look awkwardly and unnecessarily tall and perhaps too big. Unless they cut down on the unused space on top and bottom (which for the bottom would mean a thinner button).
Just a thought...

Bigger screen means my next phone will be an iPhone. My Galaxy S4 is the perfect size for me.

All these die-hard Apple fanboys and screen-size bigots are too funny.....

Just because you like your tiny little iPhone screen size, does not mean that everyone else must be stuck with it too like you.

What makes you think you have the right to decide and dictate what OTHERS' choice of THEIR screen size should be?

This is non-news. Of course Apple is testing larger screen and probably have been doing so since the inception of the original iPhone. Do we really think Apple came up with the 4 inch screen without testing different sizes. Tastes change, technologies evolve. Apple's probably continually testing different size screens, especially with the advent of curved screens.
There just needs to be a 4" and 4.5 or 4.7". Then they don't ever have to test screen sizes for the phones ever again. You don't go beyond that. You have 2 screen sizes with the exact same technology otherwise. Just like the iPad mini with retina and the iPad air, the only difference should be screen size and I'm like 99% sure that's what they will do with the phones too. iPhone 6 with 4.5-4.9" screen and iphone. 6 with 4" screen with exact same internals. No clue what they'll do as far as the colored ones are concerned.

I am of the same opinion. I did the math in an earlier post. I feel that anything beyond 4" in the current 16:9 is too clumsy. I advocate a return to 3:2 at approx the current screen height. To get in your screen size sweet spot at that ratio, it would mean a move to 1200x800, which yields a screen 0.2" taller ~0.5" wider.

I think everyone is focusing on hand sizes when the real reason, I think, is poor eyesight. My parents love the iPhone but their aging eyes can't see from a small screen. They went over to the Note, and although it's confusing and busy, at least they can see better.

I think Apple is trying to win back rich, older buyers with a bigger iPhone and to keep that market share as high as possible.

I really hope they will stop at 4.7" ....

Let those insanely large display in the android league. I want a phone I can really take with me and use one-handed.

I think the evolution of apps and mobile content have something to do with it too. Once full screen smartphones became the norm, apps and websites started to take advantage of it, which then made it more appealing to have a bigger screen.

Five years ago, if you proposed a jumbo sized BlackBerry you would have been rightfully laughed out of the building. A big screen on an old BlackBerry could have been nice, but there really wasn't anything available to really take advantage of it.

Jon Ive himself said that the iPad mini could be used with one hand.

I've found it to be the other way 'round.

The iPhone is chunky and thick in comparison to Samsung phones which are curved and thin.

The latter fit into my pockets better. YMMV

Sometimes, when I'm grumpy, I think that people who say they don't want things to change, should be placed on a special list.

Then, when the new bigger model comes out, they should be made to wait an extra few weeks before being allowed to buy it.

After a few times like that, perhaps they'll be more open to change :)

That would be a fair comparison if Samsung would sell more Galaxy S4's than they sell 4" Galaxy S4 Minis (or Galaxy S3 Minis).

That's more like it.

I get your point. What bothers me about Apple is that it (probably no coincidence in the end) reminds me of the current administration and the authoritarian way of thinking that can be found with liberals and many conservatives alike: Mama knows best and you are too stupid to make your own decision. Here is the new iWhatever and no shut up and pay. Choice? Oh no, not really - or only as a pretty meaningless political slogan when convenient.

"If you like your iPhone you can keep your iPhone. Period." (unless we change our mind that is). And this is the same for the operating system and hard ware. Everything is riddled with limitations and lack of choices. Which is frankly why I'm still very hesitant to dive any deeper into the Apple "eco system". Which is a shame because there are a lot of aspects that I really like about the stuff. Others not so much.

I think they were humbled by the 5C/5S sales numbers. They were banking on lots of people snapping up the 5C, but what they really wanted was the 5S. Lots of shortages and finally ramping up production on the S and ramping down on the C to rectify the situation.

I for one would welcome a larger screen. Have both side-by-side to let the customer make their decision. The sales numbers will show which is preferred. But Apple will never know if they just keep one screen size.

Ahh, the difference between sleek and OMG WHAT WERE THEY THINKING THAT THING IS MASSIVE I CAN'T CARRY THAT AROUND WITH ME EVERYWHERE I GO DO I LOOK LIKE SUPERMAN WITH UNLIMITED STRENGTH WHAT THE HELL SAMSUNG THAT THING IS HHUUUGGGEEE NO ONE WANTS THAT WHO WANTS THAT?

Never has an extra 3 quarters of an inch in width and height made such a huge difference.

Nobody wants a bigger iPhone. iPhone 5s is already the perfect size. These rumors are stupid.

Actually the rumors are a precursor to Apples sudden awareness that they cannot ignore consumer preferences forever. Lest they lose their position as a leading edge company. Huge current sales volume can begin to decline just when Apple least expects it. Never take the consumer for granted.

Apple had never chased market share or responded to other market conditions.

I blame market data for this crap. Everyone is asked "do you want a bigger screen" and they always say yes immediately without thinking exactly what that means.

I for one wouldn't welcome a larger iPhone.

I'm glad there is people that doesn't want a ridiculous 5.5" display...

I completely agree!

Apple really missed the boat with the larger display sizes. They don't need to make phablets, but they should at least make a 5" screen to be competitive.

Not only only that, but they have sacrificed battery life for thickness and weight.
I would give up a mm or two if I could get another hour or two of battery life.

For my 5" is almost a phablet ...

5" to be competitive with who ?!? It the "rest of the world" that went bigger and bigger to be competitive with Apple.

I tried to point out that A) the Galaxy S4 is not Samsung's best selling phone and B) if you want to assess how great the iPhone 5(/5c/5s) from a technological standpoint is, then you have to compare it to a Galaxy S4 Mini instead.

With a 4.9/5.5" iPhone, it'd be not enough anymore for Samsung to just whip it out and go "Well, baby, it's bigger than a YuoFone.", which is probably the worst metric for a smartphone anyways.

Unless they make 7" phones. And I think they started doing that already.

Is there something wrong with your computer that it forces you to read rumors about iPhone screen sizes?

My computer is functioning properly. There is something wrong, however, with people who repeatedly visit a website to read "bigger iPhone rumored", "analyst predicts bigger iPhone", "is this the year we get a bigger iPhone?" again and again and again YEAR after YEAR. Is there any kind of garbage you won't consume?
