It had better not be the next iPhone.

IT LOOKS THE SAME AS THE LAST THREE.

Yawn.

Seriously, hopefully this isn't the "A+ Update" that Jobs mentioned in the Town Hall meeting ... I wouldn't mind a new formfactor, but I'd take a front facing camera for 2-way video chats (so far been doing a lot of one-way video, two-way audio with Knocking while on a call).

Regardless of the picture I am 90% certain that the next iPhone will have the iPads A4 chip inside of it. To me this just makes sense when Jobs said this will be a A+ update that no one else will have (I am paraphrasing).

Just think a minute on the iPads reported battery life because of the A4 chip and think this hit the next iPhone. I would love the talk time on that. :D

While I am confident it will have some sort of A4-like chip, I wouldn't bet on it being identical. The larger form factor and higher resolution likely demands a more powerful CPU than what a comparable phone CPU would need. Since Apple went and listed the ipad battery in Wh rather than mAh, we can't do an apples-to-apples comparisons of battery life between the ipad and iphone. We can't just assume they'll have all that power in there for the sake of power.

Relax, it's just a prototype. The case is designed to get easy access to the innards.

I expect the new iPhone will look similar to the iPad.

If the next iPhone had a more powerful processor than their more "pc like" product, the iPad, wouldn't that kind of not make sense? Put the better processor in the device that was depicted as inferior for computing?

Well at least this photo makes it clear that the new iPhone will do multitasking.

Now we can put that to rest.

Yup. Multitasking - It supports your decision to use an app, walk, chew gum, talk to the person next to you, breathe, and many other tasks!
:D

Brick looking

Just saw this actual story in my email and was coming to post it but darn you iphone users are quick on the draw, but i wish this was a way better picture i cant really make out if this is a good thing this device being a prototype it looks like a brick.

A+ update huh?

I was hoping for better hardware design, Larger screen ~4", Totally redesigned OS.

I am ready for a totally new looking phone, I am tired of the rounded rectangle.

The A4 chip is a plus, but without multitasking it is for null. I really like the Pre interface, but I cant deal with the small screen.

Maybe I should be on PalmRumors looking for a larger Pre+++

I'm pretty positive that we will see a brand new iPhone this summer. Don't expect a complete overhaul though. The upgrade will be just enough to get iPhone subscribers to sign on to another 2 year deal with AT&T which means "KACHING" for Apple.

-As someone said before, I expect the next gen iPhone to look like the iPad with the aluminum back and hopefully an ichat app for video chat. Id even settle and have the video chat limited to wifi only.

- The alleged "prototype" iPhone is in a hard shell casing.
- The open slot at the top of the iPad is some type of sensor, not a camera.

Clearly if you look at the top of the phone you can see it has a heightened edge so its wearing a case.

Three reasons i know this is BS:

1. Apple would not give the iphone a front facing camera without the iPad having one

2. Apple would not put an unreleased product on display

3. Out of all the people there no one else noticed the supposed camera hole? Even the photographer obviously didnt until later or else he would have taken a close look.

Should be on page 2

get rid of the plastic case!

i want the aluminum case brought back. i don't want to upgrade to the new iphone because of that very reason (oh, and we don't have 3g where i live... rural, i know).

this is exciting news but article looks very sure that it is the next generation iphone. how can they beo 100% sure it is? by the way testing prototypes are often the basic skeleton, i saw BMW new 5 series protoype on youtube looking like a black hyundai, prototypes can be different.

I dont know much, but I do know this; if the iPhone is rumored to go to Verizon by this summer(strong speculation to that) then I promise you the iPhone wont have a front facing camera; their network cant support it. I'm surprised that of all the images and rumors on here I've seen "more interesting" pics when I Google 4g iPhone!
I'm not really sure how much I believe there will ever be a front facing camera, because of all the network jamming it would do, AT&T can barely handle the out put they have right now, and Verizon will be in a coma when it hits them, why would they just give us a way to video chat unless they could charge extra for it or restrict it to only wifi connections.

In other news: Apple is rumored to be working on updates to several of its computer lines. Rumors are unclear, but seem to indicate release sometime in the next 11 months.

Funny but if we're talking about the Mac Mini, 11 months might be overly optimistic. :D

Looks like a 3G with a case on it. I really hope that isn't the next generation iPhone. Jobs promised something aggressive. :p

Has anyone considered that Steve jobs saying the next iphone will be an A+ update is a reference to the a new processor ie. A4 etc ?

Relax people, that's just the forthcoming iPad nano.....

That's ok. They can watch Android continue to gain market share while Apple loses. It'll be reminiscient of the Mac vs PC battles in the 90s.

BTW, I can't wait to hear Apple's excuses this year as to why there is no multitasking on the iPhone.

Everyone asking how we missed this. Well considering it offers nothing dramatically different in terms of physical appearance, it's not that hard.

While the photo is too blury to make out significant details, one deduction that can be safely made is that the device does not feature an OLED display.

A key characteristic of OLED screens is their basically infinite contrast ratio. Black pixels are pitch dark. This is clearly not the case in the photo.
