Do you guys think you'll be able to use this tablet as a phone?

As much as you can use an iPod touch as a phone. Yeah Skype, maybe video conferencing if they have a camera, but if you catch yourself thinking about it as a phone, just picture holding a 10" tablet up to your face. :) This wouldn't have got past any stage of concept design.

AT&T to provide a data-only SIM for this baby (cue anger and complaints about AT&T lock-in), I'm guessing followed by additional carriers "later".

(Edit: clarified data-only and lack of plausibility)

If you can, it will be the biggest butt of phone jokes since the "Sidetalkin'" on the N-Gage.

Haha. But seriously, I think there's a good chance that you might be able to. More than a good a chance. Where it says "No Service", normally that would say AT&T, which equals "phone" ability. Right?? I'd love to have everyone's take on this please :)

It can have speakerphone as well as ability to use your headphones. Right??

well in these picture's there's an ear piece right up top. So we may be back to the side-talking days..if these are real...

i might be seeing things, but it looks like there is some kind of writing either reflected off the screen or superimposed over the image later in the upper right quadrant of the screen. if you look at the word "Islands" and then go about halfway up to the bezel, hopefully you should see it. i'm not sure what it says, its clearer in black and white or with a sepia effect, but i still cant make out what it says. anyone else see this?

Yes, I also figured it out, I see something but probably is just a reflexion of the ceiling

Why are you asking these questions? This is a photo of something that may or may not be an Apple product. That's it. That's all anyone knows.

Wait for the morning to find out.

What does that tell you? The screen resolution of this prototype is approximately 1024x768. If you zoom in one step farther, it far exceeds 1280x1024 and if you zoom out, it's way too small, so 1024x768 is the most logical conclusion.

Not bad. I would have preferred 1280x1024, but this *is* Apple we're talking about.

Good detective work, but that'll be a bummer if it turns out to be correct. Way lower dot pitch than an iPhone, which is already way lower than other recent devices like Nexus One, Droid, etc. I was hoping for at least 1280 on the long axis as well. If people are really going to be doing heavy reading on this thing, and utilizing these complex layouts from newspaper and magazine publishers, a great screen with a high dot pitch for good antialiasing is essential. I don't think that alone will make the device worthless, but it's an important consideration.

PVR and HDTV tuner... LOL!

Calacanis may be just spewing this stuff to throw people off... for all we know it's just some inside joke and he's laughing himself to sleep.

I don't think Apple would go *anywhere near* this concept. This will be pitched far, far away from being a phone.

- Existing iPhone customers would be livid about "needing" two phones, rightly so. You don't want two contracts for voice, two phone numbers, etc.

- It doesn't have any of the physical characteristics of a phone, and Apple doesn't let things go in 'half hearted'. If it can't be a good phone, it won't be a phone. Period. This has been Jobs' design route since... forever. :) (Cited example: cut and paste in the iPhone)

- Phone capability would confuse the message. This is a tablet, for eBooks, for social gaming, for education, for medicine... this is a tablet. It is a completely new type of product, and will be pitched this way.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

look down the right-hand column, there is very obviously a story attached to a photo of an apple tablet, but when you click on it it doesn't take you to a story.

I'm going to grab a screenshot before this gets taken down.

EDIT:: And that looks like a detachable/bluetooth keyboard next to it, no?

Not necessarily. If one is subscribing to a 3G data plan, then it would also show the same thing.

I'm asking these questions to get other people's opinion, photo or no photo. Tomorrow they are introducing a tablet with one or more cellular networks attached 100%. So I think it's a great question to ask if people think that this thing will also work as a phone (headphones/speakerphone). That's what people do in these forums Matthew. Ask questions and give answers.

Wrong. It's running Windows (red button in top right) and the keyboard counter part has 2 mouse buttons.

It would show 3G where you can see the Airport Signal, not where you see the "No Service" text. Assuming we are comparing this to iPhone.
