Drop the last T from Tablet.....

OMG, (i haven't read all 288 previous posts but) I think we have all been barking down the wrong rabbit hole. What if the rumoured TABLET computer is actually the TABLE (top) computer? That photo looks to me like revenge of the table top games like pacman etc. At least if the iTabletop is a flop at least we will all remember the absolute HYPE surrounding it.

You guys need to stop with calling everything a controlled leak thing.

Or in other words, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

arn

Oh my gosh! Arn just made a Princess Bride reference!

...
There are two benefits: (1) the screen doesn't get dirty, and (2) it's an easier/lighter maneuver for the hand.
...

I don't think dirt/smearing will be a big problem. My small prediction (albeit probably an obvious one) is the screen will have the same oleophobic surface as the 3GS. I'd be very disappointed if it didn't - I can't imagine going back to the 1G screen after using the GS.

i so hope it's fake...
why? i can hardly imagine a tablet running on an "enhanced" version of iPhone OS...

and if it's not running iPhone OS, why would it need the iPhone-like button at the bottom? to get back to home screen? well, for resetting the device in case it freezes, there must be a separate power-switch/button anyway.

so, please, please, get rid of that "home"-button and run a proper or light-weight Mac OS X.
doesnt seem like it's gonna have any wired connectivity either? no USB? no gigabit-LAN? no FireWire? nuthin?
well, being a super-sized iPhone, it's gotta have some plug for our earphones :p

after seeing this supposed leak.. i am more looking forward iPhone OS 4 :D

Ok, here's a piece of clairvoyance for you ...

The big surprise (and game changer) with the tablet will be how you interact with it. We're not talking about multi-touch anymore, but rather hand motion.

So, for example, to turn the page of a book (or newspaper), you simply move your hand *over* the display, not unlike when turning a physical page.

There are two benefits: (1) the screen doesn't get dirty, and (2) it's an easier/lighter maneuver for the hand.

The droplets of paint on the invitation graphic refer to this new mode of control. They will probably a demonstrate a paint app with support for this.

Obviously the high gloss screen allows reflective capture sensors to read your reflected facial expressions for tablet navigation.

duh.

I think MS already has the market cornered on Big A$$ Table computers...

Moving your hand over the display won't be easier than just flicking your thumb since you will already be holding the tablet. Besides, how would a gross motion by the hand be useful when you need to interact with a limited selection on the display?

This will be a massive disappointment if its real.

As people have said the tablet should be something completely new and unique. What is the point of an oversized iPhone???

Come on I cant believe Apple would be so un-orignal that they would just enlarge the iPhone and call it a day.

And if they market this as a kindle killer....well im going to laugh my ass off if they truly think people will read books/newspapers/magazines on a glossy screen.

I at this point im just figuring this will be a major let down, in the hopes that I get suprised...

Is there still any hope that the Tablet will use a Pixel QI hybrid display? What do you think?

I don't think it is an "oversized iPhone." To me, this could just be the device's Maps application maximized. I'm positive the operating system will be nothing short of breathtaking, trust me...

First off, I think it's in a case (as I think most people agree). No reason it would have 3 bezels...

Second, why are people so disappointed because it "looks like an oversized iPhone"? Who gives a crap what it looks like, as long as it looks nice (which the iPhone does). What matters is the OS, just like everything.

Just because it LOOKS like an iPhone doesn't mean it functions like one.

I hope that there's more to this than just a larger iphone with a color e-reader. HP has created a tablet, many other companies are jumping on. If that is the case then this is absolutely stupid. Just get a laptop, download books and use skype instead of an iphone. It's so big and expensive anyway.

I hope Steve presents the tablet as the future to computing. I would love to use a portable clipboard computer, use photoshop and final cut pro and edit. No one wants to own a iphone, ipod and MACPRO tower. We want one ultimate inexpensive device. It's 2010 and computers should be more advanced and smaller

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrtANPtnhygFast Forward it to 5 minutes and 44 seconds This guy is the future and he actually listens to what we want.

It must be time for bed, people are just saying the same thing 30 times. :)

iPhone physical design similarity ≠ iPhone.

"omgwtfbbq this artist used canvas?????? i saw a canvas painting last week, lol ownd its been dun b4 dude"

(Wow, I *do* need to go to sleep.)

My guess on the Apple tablet:

Price for WiFi-only model: $599 to $699 (start with the 32GB iPod touch for $299, add the larger display for $200, add $100 to $200 for high capacity battery, more DRAM, and a slightly faster CPU/GPU and that's the likely retail price).

Price for WiFi/3G model: $399 to $499 but requires a new 2-year commitment to a cellular data plan (AT&T or Verizon).
i get the logic behind these numbers, but i don't think they would separate WiFi and 3G at the hardware level. the only difference between current-gen iPhones is storage and white casing. i believe the tablet will ship with both 3G+WiFi with a more expensive unlocked option.

my reason is that PDA's (including the newton) died quickly because most models didn't have internet access. the tablet needs to be connected everywhere.

I may have been slightly unclear in my earlier post. The device's ability to detect and interpret hand motions over the display will not replace but add to the existing methods of interaction, i.e. multi-touch.

Obviously for many applications gesturing with your fingers touching the screen is still preferable. But adding support for sensing at an altitude, and sensing for altitude, opens up new possibilities. Think of it as multi-touch going 3D.

And besides, it looks magical. :)

I will reserve judgement until I see the OS in action tomorrow. Remember that its the OS and the service that will set this apart from the pathetic attempts by Microsoft to create a tablet.

three other products that look like "oversized iPhones"
1 - iMac
2 - Apple LED Cinema Display
3 - Uni-body MacBook Pro (top part)

apparently when someone sees a black bezel they think of iPhone. i'm going to start spamming messages that say "looks like an oversized iMac" etc.

This side view, a little chunkier than expected.
