Hope it looks better in ones hand than this image:

The best part of this photo is that the "sandwich" is actually an oven mitt. google "sub sandwich"

I may have been slightly unclear in my earlier post. The device's ability to detect and interpret hand motions over the display will not replace but add to the existing methods of interaction, i.e. multi-touch.

Obviously for many applications gesturing with your fingers touching the screen is still preferable. But adding support for sensing at an altitude, and sensing for altitude, opens up new possibilities. Think of it as multi-touch going 3D.

And besides, it looks magical. :)

They already have this... called optical multi-touch, the latest Dell multi-touch display as well as the HP Touchsmart use this.

They use cameras rather than a touch sensitive display.

It's less accurate and rather annoying... for instance, it happens quite frequently that you get your finger close enough, then change your mind and the optical sensors still register that as a click. Frustrating.

Oh boy, my ACD is just an oversized iPhone shape!

I'm gonna cry :p

Forget the shape, wait for the keynote to see the real deal, the software, the UI and the interaction whit it.

I dont think you get my point...

The front end is design exactly like the iPhone down to the home button. If Apple wants to send the message that this is a completely new device that youll NEED even if you have an iPhone, then they will fail miserably if they couldn't even take the time to design it as a new device.

Yes its all about the software it it will probably do amazing things, but if it looks like an oversized iPhone then the market its designed for (not us fanatics) will assume thats its exactly what it looks like and will not bother buy the "super-sized" version of what they already have.

Actually, i'm also thinking: "I have an iPhone, why I need to have two, a big size and a normal size?"

But like I said, let's wait for the keynote.

I really hope this thing can view and store PDF..

There is a lot of truth to what you are saying. I think that Home Button is now the thread between the iPod Touch, the iPhone & tomorrow's iPad. I think tomorrow they are completing a family between these three devices. Half of me agrees with you and the other half agrees with Apple keeping their products having very similar looks to one another like one big family. Know what I mean?

I disagree.

The iPod Touch isn't an iPhone but it looks very similar. If Apple created a tablet device that looked radically different from their existing multitouch devices, then you'd have both brand and user confusion.

Apple have been 'training' us to use multitouch devices for a few years. Now, they'll add some more multitouch features to a familiar-looking device. People will lap it up because it works and looks similar to an iPhone, but performs a different function.

This is the same reason that the device will be linked to iTunes. Everyone understands how to dock an iPhone to iTunes to get it to update, Apple won't be changing how it works now.

Similarly, this is why the UI won't be radically different. If you're after some space-age, fancy-pants UI, you're not getting it. You'll be getting an updated iPhone OS. Its all about conditioning your customer base... and Apple are VERY good at it.

three other products that look like "oversized iPhones"
1 - iMac
2 - Apple LED Cinema Display
3 - Uni-body MacBook Pro (top part)

apparently when someone sees a black bezel they think of iPhone. i'm going to start spamming messages that say "looks like an oversized iMac" etc.

Yes exactly.

I'd personally like to know what people were expecting? I have a feeling that if it didn't have that button there wouldn't be anyone saying "oversized iphone".

i think they chose the same design because it 'works', why change it when so many of us love the look of our iPhones/iPod touch?

Also, will it have any USB? :S running iPhone OS, etc it prob won't right? :S

I do think it's funny that when given the most plausible image yet, the debate just gets more fantastic and people get less logical.

"I don't want a freaking giant iPhone!"

What's an iPhone if not a miniature tablet computer?

"It's running iPhone OS! I don't want that crap!"

Long story here, but to cut it short google "information appliance". In summary, iPhone OS isn't just a phone OS, it's an OS for using applications. You guys have to get over the whole desktop OS paradigm... it's not the future for mobile devices. Desktops are messy, humans are messier, and when you put the two together you get a big drain on memory and CPU resources.

"I don't want to have to buy a 3G contract!"

Nobody has said you'll have to. Just because it has a placeholder for SIM connection, doesn't mean it needs activating like a phone. Given that it's not a phone, the odds are in favour that you won't need a SIM.

"Glossy screen = NO THANKS"

Yeah, I said the same about the unibody MBPs, and I really meant it. So why do I own two now? :p

Fake Bezel

Nice, I see it now. I thought it was two words. So like arn posted, are we going with this ####

as the actual bezel? Seems to match the ear piece and home button layout we are currently looking at.
I think the above image is fake...
I think the story image is real... and that the 'alcove' at top surrounds either a front facing camera or second home button. The 'riveted' frame I think is a decoy.

I do also thing there is a chance of two tablets... 'one more thing'

Both the 'iPad' and 'iSlate'. One being either smaller or lesser with media rich features whilst the major 10 inch being the robust mobile 3G tablet.

Morning campers

Today is the dawn of a new epoch for consumers everywhere. A new oversized iPhone with the ability (drumroll...) to play Farmville! This is so sick. No more sitting in front of my iMac shepherding my flock. Now I can lie in bed with my oversized iPhone and get some serious farming in! Apple have pulled the rabbit out of the hat with this one. A zillion facebook users can't be wrong. Way to go APPL!

Ah, the last minute leak. classic. It feels like we play the same little dance at every one of these events.
