Right, and I think that's ultimately what's going to happen. Version 1.0 will just be a big iPod and it'll be another 8 years before we can actually use the thing to do something useful. It's just a little disappointing because we've heard rumors about the tablet (and there is evidence they've been working on it) back to 2002... I guess I was hoping they had spent THOSE last 8 years making the "future" device and that we didn't wait this long just to get the minimalist product. You know, to really blow our minds about what is actually possible with a tablet and exceed expectations. I guess we'll see in a few hours, but I have my doubts.

I think you're right (unfortunately!). They'll have put *some* thought into customising it for the bigger device I think, but the first one won't be perfect or they'll have nothing to talk about next year. They've always done this. The iPhone was actually a classic example, originally coming without 3rd party app support (it's only been a few years, and it's already become unthinkable).

8 years might be an exaggeration, but if you're waiting for customised versions of Photoshop (and the necessary battery+processor squeezed into what will no doubt be a ~5mm thick device), some amazing new intuitive way of video editing etc yes I think it's going to be a few years yet.

Who knows, all will be revealed later on but I know the rumour mill tends to set itself up for disappointment if people let their imaginations run a little too wild :) Evolutionary rather than revolutionary is my theory, for the time being, but perhaps acting as the next stepping stone if they do want to take themselves fully down the centrally-controlled touchy feely apps route.

Well, off for a controlled leak...

Looks like you do need a cell provider. I'll have to think about it before I consider getting one.

Just curious... How is that any different than any laptop computer or iPod touch anyone has ever owned? To quote an earlier poster, be sure to let us know if/when you find a netbook or other 3G/4G enabled device that includes free carrier service.

No offense, but the carrier requirement hardly seems like a dealbreaker. Just stick with WiFi. And if you're already a Sprint or Verizon customer, just grab one of their portable 3G or 4G hotspots and you're good to go. Probably cheaper that way anyhow.

thats IF it absolutely is on other carriers.

to use it on WiFi, you have you be in certain places...

Have you already seen the iSlate-Commercial:

(sorry about the 15sec commercial in advance)

http://www.stern.de/digital/homeentertainment/apple-neuvorstellung-mysterioeser-islate-werbespot-im-netz-1538694.html

Although I doubt the name will be iSlate (iPad sounds nicer to me), the commercial looks fine - probably not true because theres just nothing to get addicted to...

THat looks like something Apple would do, but the "So much fun to be a finger" sounds super awkward :D

Exactly.. reminds me of the creative-ness.

why the eff is there a home button??? Jesus, this really might just be a gigantic iPhone, and nothing more..

I was right about the silver gradient though, a la iTunes 9.

(Check previous posts if you don't believe me)

It's not that I don't believe you, it's just......well......not that interesting.

There's no difference, but I don't know a lot of people who own two laptops and pay for two separate 3G plans. With the Tablet, if we're asked to pay for another data access plan on top of our "unlimited" iPhone data plan, we will have to do just that. On top of the cable/dsl/whatever internet plan you already have at home, the cost of access for these devices starts to become a little ridiculous.

I hope there's going to be a video with Johny Ive telling us about the way they designed and machined it - with all the earnest seriousness of someone who has found a cure for cancer. Love that guy.

I fear that this device will outprice most potential customers.

I'm afraid we'll see a $599 with contract deal, and then a $999 no contract, wifi-only-or-find-your-own-carrier-in-the-gutter deal. It happened with the iPhone, and it'll probably happen with the new iTabletProduct.

But if the features outweigh the price, then I'll be buying with the contract (so long as the contract is reasonable).

Don't misunderstand me people, i'm just another huge Apple fan but..

i see the tablet falling next to AppleTV and MBAir with an iPhone UI.
iTunes store???
App store??
Book store??
Movie rentals??
Sitcom rentals??
What else?
Port everything from the iPhone for a much bigger screen?

And that's all. a huge (regarding to an iPhone) fragile piece of equipment you paid $600-800 for...

This means pure consuming experience instead of making something honestly useful.

For god's sake, in order for ANY mobile device to be useful it has to be CHEAP ENOUGH. I'm tired of babying so much crap around me.

I think the tablet is going to be the 1st portable fanfare for NON creative people.

Just my opinion though... which might also change in a matter of hours :DDD

It's just something else for naysayers to complain about. Any 3G connectivity with decent bandwidth and usage will obviously cost us, as it would with any other device with decent web capabilities (Kindle and Nook aren't even in the running as far as that goes).

I think there will be a very large market for "a big iPod Touch" with a deeper interface and specialized apps. Most likely a lot larger than for netbooks with physical keyboards. Personally, I'd be buying this if all it ended up being was a media player/web browser with a 10" touchscreen. Anything else they add is a bonus as far as I'm concerned. I think we can predict with certainty that it will be locked into the iTunes/App Store ecosystem, and I don't see that as a bad thing either.
