I just realized I would turn off notifications as well.

I would still get them on the apple watch so no issue for me.

Yeah, but they gotta have some goodies held back for updates.
I look forward to trying this and get the feeling I'll toggle off* Wallpaper and Notifications.

* Grammar police: is toggle off a word?
That's what I'll be doing once released, I tried AOD for 1 day and turned it off, I didn't enjoy the experience.

Sounds like a useful feature, but I really wish there was a setting that made the AOD work as its name says (i.e. it remains on all the time). Rather than deciding after a period of time to make the display go blank. Why the hell do I want the display to go blank after a period of time if I have enabled AOD

Apple makes the reason/excuse amongst other things of:

"If you haven't used your iPhone for a while"

Also in my experience, when AOD makes the screen go blank, it does not learn from my use patterns and does not turn the screen on or off accordingly. In my experience it just makes it go blank, and it remains like that until I touch the screen.

I for one can't wait for this to be implemented so I can disable the wallpaper. I constantly have to check that the display is not awake when I put it in my pocket otherwise I'm finding the LED on. I have never had this issue with any other iPhone, but the only way to tell if this is off or awake is to check for the flashlight and camera icons on the screen first.

I think disabling the raise to wake would solve this too, but I like that feature.

Doesn't it kind of defeat the purpose of AOD if you can't see notifications? I get with the wallpaper, but seems the feature is useless without being able to glance down and see notifications (and yes I get you can leave it on, just seems dumb to even have a toggle).

That's a shame. They had it right to begin with, and did it better. I don't like seeing them kowtowing to users who's only feedback is "AHHH DIFFERENT MY ONLY POINT OF REFERENCE IS ANDROID SO THATS HOW IT MUST BEEEEEEE."
First of all, they are giving you choice. If you like it the way it is now, great, keep using it like that. Nobody forces you to change anything.

Second of all, I have to disagree with you. No, they didn't had it right to begin with. The whole point of an AOD is to provide the essential information a user could need at a glance. Which is: time (and date), eventually the % of battery, notifications.
Having the exact same screen as the normal screen, with its wallpaper fully living there yet dimmed, is not a crucial information a user needs. Even the widgets aren't needed.

It's not about the only point of reference being Android, it's about the fact that for once Android got it right from the beginning. That screen is supposed to be the most minimalistic screen because in fact nobody wants his screen to be always ON (despite what its name says) or looking like the phone is in use. The point is mimicking a state where the screen is OFF and providing crucial information only.

Considering that, I personally would love an AOD where ONLY an icon for notifications appears. No time, no date, no battery. Just the icon of Messages if I received a new text.

EDIT: I attached what I consider being the closest to the perfect AOD on an iOS environment :

iPhone_AOD.png

Only time shown + the last notification received. The little "drop shadows" under the icon indicates more notifications.

This is how it should have been from the start.

Good stuff! Love the AOD feature. Happy more custom options are being offered.

More options is great. But what’s the point of AOD if one disabled both wallpaper & notifications? Just to see the time/date? Weather at a glance, seems wasteful unless a major storm front is inbound and you desperately NEED moment by moment info - like a hurricane snow storm earthquake, or similar for evacuation which a big wide spread telco alert like Amber would be done.

Still options is great.

I do love glancing down and seeing my cats so often, though.
I feel ya. Having the option to control opacity level should’ve been here from the start. The colour options and type of standard text for time and date is lame - a slight reason I returned the 14 Pro.

At least Apple listens and reacts quickly to user feedback now. Before it would have been part of iOS 17.

Says logic... What's the point of seeing your wallpaper or your fitness rings? Objectively, what benefit do you see in it ?

Reasons:

Wallpaper - photos of one’s family or pets. Helps reduce anxiety or stress per a long or strenuous working day. Maybe the anniversary of a lost family member or pet ! That’s self explanatory!

An Android user complaining about this 1 function coming for a. Land of “so called endless user options” really shouldn’t be complaining Ona. Land where minimal end user options is just opening up. Seems hypocritical of the iOS platform from an Android platform premise.

Fitness Rings:
Many people want to track their health and working a corporate job or on family or friend visits may not just check the time (in relation to a gym closure time vs when ready/available to go) yet also how much further to attain that daily goal.

Questioning this may possibly be fitness isn’t your focus at this time in your life or you’re not understanding the dedication many put into their workouts, the sacrifices they’re willing to take to achieve their fitness goals/regimen.

But those or just possible reasons in answer to your question with some opinions that may not apply. Cool?

Nice! The iOS team has been really responsive to feedback. Not sure if it is always like this or I’m just paying more attention now that I have an iPhone.

I think we are missing the point here. OR we have totally different visions of what a AOD should be.

For me (and apparently for the vast majority of people) an AOD is just a dead screen with the possibility to look at the time and know if there are unseen notifications without having to interact with the phone.
If your friends birthday is that important, then he/she should be the default wallpaper in your lock screen. But that's not even a point of debate, since Apple DOES provide the option of having the wallpaper. And if your fitness rings are so important, I'm sure you can spend a few seconds of your time to go check the app.

But at the end of the day, I think we agree on the fact that Apple should be more flexible and give us options to customise our AOD a little more. In that scenario, if the fitness rings are your thing, I'm sure you'd be able to have them in your AOD...

When I saw this article I thought I’d jump to this forum to see the cheers from everyone. I had read previous posts where people requested these features.

I’m surprised at the number of responses where people would still like something different.

This is why I have empathy for Apple engineers and designers. Always On is one feature yet look at the number of options and changes just this relatively small group would like.

Imagine if Apple tried to add all of these customizations and then do that for every feature.
