I would have to think that the top port would be for a micro/mini USB port. Hasn't Europe mandated that all mobile phone devices must use a universal charging style, in which one of micro/mini USB was elected?

I would have to say the upcoming iPhone5 would also feature a USB port as well, as I don't see Apple offering a different model only for European markets. That would most likely go for the iPad as well.

It would be interesting to see how they incorporate the proprietary 30-pin connector along with the USB. USB for chargin and 30-pin for syncing? Or elimination of the 30-pin altogether?

I'd love to have the miniDVI port.. If the iPad is going to be used for Keynote and stuff, having a miniDVI port would be awesome... plus with having the port on the left side (as with the current MB's) seems to make sense...

But who knows... it could be something totally different, or just another case that will bite the dust once the iPad 2 is released.

Serious question....

.....can someone explain the benefits of an SD card slot? Thanks!

I found this online but its from the SD Memory Association and would prefer to hear from the general (tech) public:
-Ultra-compact, rugged removable storage for media-rich digital content
-Market leader and de-facto industry standard
-Widely available in the marketplace from numerous manufacturers
-Solid state, reliable, interoperable and easy to use
-High-capacity storage with several classes of high data transfer speeds

Well if the iPad wasn't popular enough in business already, Mini DisplayPort would give it a definite win.

Steve might have been right when he said that the Playbook would be DOA.

It would save people $30 from not having to buy an accessory for the iPad and Apple would just make it standard like they do on the MacBooks (Pro/Air) and iMacs. The use of an SD Card Slot is not for additional storage, but to make it easier for people who want to take a picture with an actual camera, then upload them to the iPad and not have to sync with a computer (cuts out the middle man).

Even if only half of them are true, this is still 1 unhappy first gen iPad owner. We really did get screwed...

nice troll :) BTW Same with the iPhone 4. I must have fallen under some spell, what was I thinking! Don't get me started about the iPhone 2G. Were we all mad in 2007? What is the world coming to? Or rather, what was the world like then?

Back in the day I paid $200 for an analog mobile phone with a FIXED antenna about 20cm (8") high sticking out of it. Man did I ever get screwed.

Looking forward to your next troll

That sure looks like a great place for an omni-directional microphone, as seen on the iMac and the new :apple:displays.

Sorry to burst your bubbles :)

Why did you burst it?! I like my bubble intact, thank you very much!:p

In all seriousness, I think you may be correct about this one.

While I completely disagree with his post, I'm just wondering why you think that poster is a troll? Because you don't agree with his viewpoint?

Who cares about SD Card Slot and Minidisplay Port give us USB with a proper filesystem finally.

What exactly did you expect?

You are an early adopter of a breakthrough gadget - do you understand what that means? Did you not look at the evolution of the iPhone?

You have had a year of use out of a revolutionary gadget that has a massively high resale value. Sell and upgrade if you want the latest functions. Simple.

more intrigued about the rear camera - is that aperture big enough not to foul a flash?

Clearly if someone buys something, they have to know that it will get updated with something better. I mean... DUH. I guess common sense isn't so common these days.

I'd say the irrationality of mKizzo's post makes fobfob fully justified in his reply. :)

Anything but MiniDisplayPort, anything but that. For Christ's sake, a PS/2 connector would be more useful than a MiniDisplayPort connection. Apple needs to cut the crap with these damn standards that no one else in the world uses.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (iPhone; Opera Mini/5.0.019802/22.414; U; en) Presto/2.5.25 Version/10.54)

No you didn t get screwed
You were impatient knowing full well that the next revision would be better
You have an excellent product

As for the additional slots:

SD stick to show photos and videos
To family and friends

Mini usb

Wouldn t Apple change the charger to mini usb as they agreed to do for Europe?

No not necessarily, the EU standard only applies to mobile phones, and in addition to that, the standard allows manufactures to ship a proprietary->miniUSB adapter with the product and still be in compliance.

Pretty stupid to assume mini display port. We already know that Apple have to (by law) add a MicroUSB port to the iPhone in Europe. Apple being Apple will use it across all iDevices to keep that consistent look. They are hardly going to ship a little converter for it....its too messy.

Plus which, USB is a lot more useful than a proprietary dock connector (yes, before I get bitched at - I DO know the pin layout of the dock connector, and I DO know it can do audio/video directly if the device supports it, and has USB connectivity).

As much as I hate the European Union, I like the idea of every mobile device (be it music player, phone, portable game player, etc) using the same, open connector...it makes perfect sense...why should we have to pay out for custom cables that provide the exact same functionality, if not less!

Once again, no Apple does not have to add a miniUSB port to the iPhone or the iPad. The standard says that a company can ship a product with a charger adapter and still be in compliance. There does not actually have to be a port on the device itself.

The new port on the top center is obviously an IR port so that you can use the iPad as a remote control for everything in your AV cabinet. It would also allow you to control the Apple TV since the WiFi-based Remote app can be a little choppy at times (commands get delayed and/or the scroll is very unpredictable).

Could be a mini USB port. Apple is now required to put it into the next gen iPhone that is released in Europe. Could be just for charging

Seriously do people read anymore????

As I have already posted twice in this thread, NO Apple is NOT required to have a miniUSB port on the iPhone or any mobile device that it makes. 1) The EU charger standard only applies for mobile phones. 2) manufacturers are permitted to supply a miniUSB adapter with the device instead of having a miniUSB port directly on the device.
