Even if only half of them are true, this is still 1 unhappy first gen iPad owner. We really did get screwed...

I know how you feel, I bought a macbook pro 3 years ago and it doesn't even have a quad core i7 processor!!! Apple screwing everybody AGAIN!! There is absolutely no such thing as progression is there?

Yes a chance.

This thing has the chance of becoming a super-video system for recording all your "big moments" through life, replacing a lot of video cameras and video editing computers for the average Joe.

A better mic might be in the plan.

We'll see, but you would have to admit a USB or display connector up top center is just... ridiculous. Why not put it low on the side where the cord or connector won't look like a freaky tophat and loop of nutty floating around the minimalist form of the pad in the dock? Esthetically the placement of connectors dead center top make no sense. Maybe Apple finally broke away from that limiting factor of good taste.
Considering that the microphones on all of the other iOS devices are about the size of a pinhead and work just fine I highly doubt that they would go to a large, high-quality mic because practically no one would want to use an iPad as a "super-video system" (it's way too big to be practical for that purpose and where are you going to put your 20:1 zoom lens and anti-shake mechanisms -- how is it going to be "super" without those features?). IMO, it's not a microphone port -- although it could share that area with the IR port which I've already detailed. In any case, I'd also say that it is not a USB port (of any kind) and it's not a mini DisplayPort.

It's an IR port just like I've already said, and if you like you can put one of those pinhead-sized microphones in that same area.

Frankly, however, I suspect that these cases are just a mock-up or guess by someone in China so it's probably nothing.

You could have fooled me...given all the articles about them on here

Once again, no Apple does not have to add a miniUSB port to the iPhone or the iPad. The standard says that a company can ship a product with a charger adapter and still be in compliance. There does not actually have to be a port on the device itself.

Actually, it is much worse than that.

There is nothing in that "agreement" that enforces manufacturers to implement micro-USB as a charger. It is optional.

The new port on the top center is obviously an IR port so that you can use the iPad as a remote control for everything in your AV cabinet. It would also allow you to control the Apple TV since the WiFi-based Remote app can be a little choppy at times (commands get delayed and/or the scroll is very unpredictable).

+1 on this one. I can't imagine why we would need a mini display port when we have a dock connector that can provide video out. What we need is an IR port. That would put the high end remote control companies on alert about their pricing. The higher end touchscreen Crestron remotes are around 4-5x the cost of an iPad and have 1/1000th the functionality.

What's there to hate? If you have a grudge against north korea I would understand it, but the EU, what have they done against you? Your country benefits from it, just like every other nation in it. :)

Yeez... Really?
.
I hate to go off topic, but you really have no clue...

The UK public does not benefit from the EU. Instead we pay £150 million a week for some rich Belgian guy to introduce stupid laws which are completely unsuitable for being used across such a vast number of countries due to different ways of life. If you can list me three actual benefits to the average Joe then please feel free. I have yet to find a single one.

It doesn't exactly help matters that the UK is hated by most of the countries in the EU either...

Seriously do people read anymore????

As I have already posted twice in this thread, NO Apple is NOT required to have a miniUSB port on the iPhone or any mobile device that it makes. 1) The EU charger standard only applies for mobile phones. 2) manufacturers are permitted to supply a miniUSB adapter with the device instead of having a miniUSB port directly on the device.

I still say this is a microUSB port. As I pointed out in my first post (you quoted me before I was finished), I am fully aware that the EU is allowing an adaptor to ship with it...but I cant see Apple doing that - its cheap, ugly and defies the point of the whole thing.

Either way, Apple MUST either:

1) Stick a microUSB port on the iPhone
2) Provide an Adaptor with the iPhone

So, lets address both options:

OPTION 1

If Apple place the microUSB port directly onto the iPhone, it would make complete sense to carry this across to other iDevices. It'll keep the consistency that we all know Apple loves, and it'll make it much easier to hook up to iPads. Future proofing its connectivity if you will.

It would also allow them to get the shuffle (and maybe even the nano) even smaller due to the smaller connectivity port. Heck, they could even drop the headphone socket in favour of a USB based one - it was a bit impractical to do so with the big dock connector, but microUSB would be ideal for this.

OPTION 2

If Apple were to include a small adaptor of sorts it would obviously be the quicker and cheaper option...explain to me when Apple has ever been about taking quick cheap options over reengineering a product to get it just right?

In addition, it would mean that for every iPhone forever more, they will have to include this stupid little plastic thing...something nobody wants.

and about 1/5,000,000 of their customers..

Again, that agreement is optional. There is nothing that enforces manufacturers to include micro-USB to charge their devices. It is all done in "goodwill" by the participating parties.

Are you serious? You can't IMAGINE how awesome such a pad would be as an all-in-one? There is nothing cumbersome about it, and the screen is far better for recording. Most cameras are small and fussy and hard to see what you are shooting most times. You also can;t pop the video direct to editing, direct to net.

Video super-system FOR THE AVERAGE JOE is possibly the greatest expanded use of this device.

How many people really use zoom? I almost never do. You can do it electronically to a small scale. Anti-shake mechs are now software driven, not mechanical.

Sure, it might not be a mic, but it will need a good set of mics. The only serious drawback of the central mic is that a hand can block it when holding.

The top hole is definitely for the collapsable FM antenna, and on the left a crank for battery charging in a pinch.

I'm really hoping this could be the much hyped Light Peak!

I'm hoping for mini USB, not display out.
Display out could be done via the 30-pin or USB with a specialised cable, which Apple will charge $45 for and everyone else will charge $4.50

If the iPad 2 has a retina display, dual core, SD, front and back camera and USB connectivity, I'll certainly be buying one...

...and I don't even want an iPad :D

you guys kill me, the hole top and centre is likely to be the 'new' on/off switch.

Then what is the point of on/off switch that is to the right of it? There is definitely a hole in these cases for the switch you are talking about and it's in the same position as the existing iPad.

Get your eyes checked dude, there is definitely a new hole that is puzzling and hence the discussion.

It became non-optional the moment Apple signed the agreement...they agreed to do it, nuff said.

LOL! Good one! :p

I don't understand why a person would go out and buy an ipad now with all this stuff leaking out. Might as well wait until this new one comes out

Yeah, that's not the case though.

There is nothing legal binding in that agreement, trust me. It is optional to implement or even use the micro-USB charger and currently, Apple has opted-out.

You are right, but, it still COULD be a mini USB port....personally I think its for the not often mentioned 'Stargate Wormhole Multi Dimensional Teleport Induction Button'.

They stopped putting large ugly ports on top of any portable product ages ago. It's a fake. You'd be mental to have something that points out to everyone looking at it. Apple's designs a beautiful, not ugly mock ups.

Enjoy your ranting, Dude.
