Maybe that extra dock connector people were talking about a while back is actually an SD card slot or a display port. That makes so much more sense than two dock connectors!

power/home button

It is a hole for power button guys. It has been relocated to the top middle.

...and maybe it'll double as the home button. I think I'd like that, as I too often accidentally push the home button where it is currently. Also, I'm hoping for an active bezel with programable gestures, even if the feature has to be optimized by software like Magic Prefs or Better Touch Tool (for Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad).

Seriously do people read anymore????

As I have already posted twice in this thread, NO Apple is NOT required to have a miniUSB port on the iPhone or any mobile device that it makes. 1) The EU charger standard only applies for mobile phones. 2) manufacturers are permitted to supply a miniUSB adapter with the device instead of having a miniUSB port directly on the device.

-Don

Correct. That's what will happen. And to the one that said they won't ship an adapter because it's "too messy",it's a lot less messy than redesigning your product just because some bureaucrat says you have to in order to sell it in what is a(significant)fraction of your market.

The rule is simply that you have to be able to use a standard charger with the phone. How you achieve that is (thankfully)up to you, including an adapter.

lol if the rumors are confirmed the iPad 2 will be a bastardized frankenstein monster. Amazing horse power yes, but ugly as hell.

Even if only half of them are true, this is still 1 unhappy first gen iPad owner. We really did get screwed...

How did we "get screwed"? I can never understand this attitude. We got a great device that works as advertised. Should technology stop moving forward? Will our iPads stop working the day the new one comes out?

Why in the world would an iPad have a rear facing camera? That's so impractical.

Because having a camera right there is a lot more convenient than having to carry & coordinate another camera. With it, you can take pictures/video, scan barcodes, do "augmented reality" stuff (ex.: instant translation of written languages), etc.; yeah it's not as convenient as on a small/pocket camera/phone/iPod device, nor as good quality as a dedicated SLR or camcorder, but it's right there now with no effort. Without it, you can't do those things without extra gadgets and adapters and effort.

Hey, if it's cheap and tiny and easy to add, then there's no reason not to.
Just because you can't think of a use doesn't mean nobody else will. I think it's a great move.

seems like there could be a ********* of business applications for that camera that most seem to ignore entirely...

Who knows what applications they come up with for that camera? It doesn't cost enough money to leave out and limit the potential moving forward IMO...

The last thing you will ever see in any apple device is a micro/mini usb slot, I still hope for normal USB + filesystem.

Wow! THat's really great, considering the source!

We all know Apple shares all their plans with these cheap case makers!

More rumors for the rumor mongers all brought to you by the continued irresponsible reporting by this web site!

This is just another no nothing piece of information!

Blah D blah D blah!

Give us something better than these fourth party maker rumors who are just trying to get their name in the press!

Home Button

The hole on top is where they are relocating the home button to.

Bingo. Well put. I don't see why brnmbrns et al think that just because they can't imagine a practical use for something, (A) nobody else can either, and (B) it's just not worth adding a $10 part to a $500 product.

brnmbrns, there's a reason darn near every cell phone has a rear-facing camera, despite poor quality, inconvenience, and impracticality. Ya think that reason might apply to iPads too?

Umm...

one of those might be for the MicroSIM?

I doubt it - if you bought a 3G iPad, the need have the SIM accessible is probably moot enough to not warrant putting a space on a case for it. Same reason cases don't expose the SIM slot on the iPhone.

As has been de-constructed several times on this site already, the current two-part iDevice charger meets the requirements already.
part 1: cable with 30-pin dock connector -> USB A plug
part 2: country-specific mains plug -> USB A jack

Nothing has to change.

That is, even if the "signing" of this agreement was binding (which it isn't).
Or if applied to things other than phones (which it doesn't).

There is no need for Apple to include a micro-USB port OR a new adapter. None. Zilch. Nada.

Please retire this argument from your arsenal.

Thanks, please drive through.

Also, a micro-USB port would only allow the iDevice to be used as a device, not a host. USB is asymmetrical. You can't plug flash drives, printers, etc into a device port. Those are also devices. You need to plug a device into a host. The host port is the full size USB "A" port (the flat rectangular one on computers). The full-size device port is the "B" port, which is the squarish port seen on printers. Or, use one of the smaller ports -- the micro or mini USB ports. Both are device ports, used to hook devices (hard drives, cameras, phones, etc.) into hosts.

Your absolutely crazy, if you can do without your iPad sell it now. If you have a loss after you sell it pay the difference. Seriously as a first Gen owner we bought what was advertised. I can't remember a time Apple stopped supporting the previous generation, Unless its a big revamp that they couldn't.

EU ruled adapters are OK.That's what Apple plans to use.
And I agree, with Facetime it will need a mic. That's the other port.

It has a mic and it works well. It's certainly as good as the iPhone 4's mic.

It's definitely not IR. IR is dated technology, and to put it in one would mean committing to including it with all future models. That's ridiculous. Remotes should be WiFi or Bluetooth (e.g. PS3 remote). Those are based on RF and do not require line-of-sight to operate. They can also support higher data rates, allowing for more information to be transferred and a better experience.

I stand by my original assertion: it's a full USB port.

Yes, people can read, but some can't comprehend that Apple (required or not) will not want a miniUSB adaptor as it is too messy and easy to lose. Better to build it in, consistently across all iOS devices.

An adapter is not needed. They're in full eu compliance already.
