They stopped putting large ugly ports on top of any portable product ages ago. It's a fake. You'd be mental to have something that points out to everyone looking at it. Apple's designs a beautiful, not ugly mock ups.

Enjoy your ranting, Dude.

When did I say it was a port either? I am simply saying there is a hole there and it's what we are discussing. It's definitely not the sleep/wake button like you suggested, but I also agree that it would be stupid for it to be a port. The only logical explanation I can come up with (if it is not fake, lets just say) is for it to be a microphone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-gb) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

In case anyone hasn't said it:

My money's on micro/mini USB. If Apple are having to add it to the iPhone for Europe it makes sense that they'd add it to the iPad as well so one charger fits all.

Edit: Oops, someone has said it before. Ignore me.

I know they can get away with simply supplying an adapter but none of us know yet which route they'll go down. Personally, I'd prefer a second port to having to carry an adapter with me all the time.

iPad purchase.

My dog knocked my iPad 3G off of the kitchen table and with the iPad not having a case on it, managed to destroy my valuable investment. (bad Fido!)

I was wondering ... should I go ahead and purchase another 1st gen iPad or wait for iPad 2.0? Would the iPad 2.0 have significant upgrades etc to warrant waiting? I have an 11" Air, an 17" Pro, and an iPhone 4 but I still miss my iPad.

Thank you in advance for your input. :apple:

Just wait. I know the wait will be hard. I sold mine in anticipation of the 2nd gen and maximizing profit on my end, but I'm holding out. The 2nd gen if rumors are even slightly true will be a huge upgrade. :D

There's no real information about an 2nd generation ipad, just speculation.

I'm sure the ipad2 will have upgrades. Would they warrant waiting? Depends entirely on what they end up being (which isn't known), and whether they'd be worth it to you to wait (something only you can decide).

In other words.... think about in what ways the current ipad didn't meet your needs, what you wish it would have. If any of those match the seemingly likely upgrades, then you'd do better to wait.

It'll be hard. I know everything is purely spectulation - but what rumors will, with certainty, come into fruition?

Why is there nothing on MacRumor's Buyer's Guide about the iPad?

@deeddawg

I was pretty happy with the original iPad. You know, except for it breaking so easily. :p

Perhaps something a little lighter wouldn't hurt. Any rumors on the iPad 2.0's weight?

They don't update the buyers guide for new products until a product gets updated. Since there has been no update to the iPad yet, there is no need for a buyers guide entry. It's not like it would say anything other than "Next update: No clue!"

Everything is just speculation at this point. Come this time next year though, the buyers guide will be more predictive and probably say "New iPad coming soon, don't buy."

Have already seen this

I saw cases like this last week when I was walking around the electronics markets in Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei--although it was only one or two stalls that were selling them. They are being sold for 30 rmb for one (of course much cheaper if buying in quantity).

Power button

It is a hole for power button guys. It has been relocated to the top middle.

I thought that, but given this isn't a cellphone, I would be surprised if Apple bothered to even attempt to conform to the European standard.

Be surprised:)

They were part of the group that agreed to established this standard for Europe and it will spread to USA.

As everybody wrote the standard is for cell phones, however since Apple tries to be as considerate as possible to the environment, they will IMO put this connector into all the smaller Apple chargeable devices.(iphone, ipod, ipad etc.)

Having had many devices one can only agree that it is very frustrating needing adapters , different cables a charge for this phone a charger for that phone , add the different automobile chargers and it's a mess.

Even when I try to recycle a cell phone nobody wants the chargers or cables, so more e-waste.

Totally unnecessary.

Now if somebody would get rid of all the bricks which clog up the powerstrips some manufactures still ship with their products..................

If it were a mini display port that might make the higher resolution rumors a little more credible. As in, it's not the actual screen that has that resolution but what it's capable of outputting? Probably not but it's just a random thought. I'll wait and see what Apple gives us.

I'm thinking either the mic or the power button ideas sound more practical though. Hell even a micro USB port. Who knows though?

I would have to think that the top port would be for a micro/mini USB port. Hasn't Europe mandated that all mobile phone devices must use a universal charging style, in which one of micro/mini USB was elected?

I would have to say the upcoming iPhone5 would also feature a USB port as well, as I don't see Apple offering a different model only for European markets. That would most likely go for the iPad as well.

It would be interesting to see how they incorporate the proprietary 30-pin connector along with the USB. USB for chargin and 30-pin for syncing? Or elimination of the 30-pin altogether?

EU ruled adapters are OK.That's what Apple plans to use.
And I agree, with Facetime it will need a mic. That's the other port.

Might as well wait... it won't be long before the new one is out. I would. I think iPad 2.0 will have some significant upgrades.
