It’s lipstick on a pig. At this rate, they probably felt the need to change something just for the heck of it. Their design team is probably bored out their minds.

Do you want a redesign for the sake of having something different? I'd rather prefer Apple to perfect their current design and material choices, rather than changing it constantly which in turn requires a significant retooling investment and ultimately, you as an end-client bear the cost of all of this. Furthermore, even if Apple completely changes the design, who cares? The vast majority of people will put a case on top of it right after unboxing and will never appreciate it. Also, there is a vast market of third-party accessories and Apple should be careful what it decides to change because it may ultimately lead to certain accessories no longer being supported and some clients may decide to hold on purchasing the new device because lack of compatibility with already purchased chargers, stands and so forth. In essence, drastic changes should be avoided. Finally, Apple's design team is not working only on the external design of the device but it is also involved in designing the software, so I'm not sure that they got bored or lazy in the recent years.

I really don’t like it, plus going back to aluminum is a notable downgrade, it is a softer material and dents much easier and deeper when you drop it.

Seasoned leaker Sonny Dickson has shared more dummy models of Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 series, with the latest lot revealing a noticeable shift in Apple's iPhone Pro model design that goes beyond the much-talked-about new rear camera bar.

Dickson points out that the iPhone 17 Pro dummy models feature an outlined area on the back, beginning just below the camera module and extending to the bottom of the chassis. Dickson says this is "where the glass will change."

According to Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the iPhone 17 Pro models will use a combination of materials — specifically, a glass section for the logo area integrated into an overall metal chassis. This explains the red areas on the iPhone 17 Pro models we saw in a previous CAD image.

According to The Information, Apple has chosen a half glass, half aluminum build for its high-end devices to increase durability. The glass would allow wireless charging to continue to be available, but a partial aluminum frame would be less prone to breakage.

Apple's current iPhone 16 Pro models feature a titanium chassis – a change Apple touted as a key upgrade when it debuted with the ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro. With the introduction of the ‌iPhone 17‌ lineup, Apple is reportedly planning to bring the entire selection of devices back to aluminum.

Consistent with rumors and previous CAD images, the dummies depict Apple's embrace of an elongated horizontal camera module along the top of the back of the iPhone 17 Pro models and the iPhone 17 Air, but not on the regular model. The dummies also appear to have a smoother transition between the edges of the camera bump and the back cover, reportedly owing to Apple's use of a new glass-and-metal splicing material process.

Today's dummies also indicate that all iPhone 17 models – including the all-new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air – will feature MagSafe. The new design will constitute one of the most significant visual changes to Apple's high-end ‌iPhone‌ models in recent years. The new lineup is expected to arrive in September.

Does anyone know if the base iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display too just like the pro models and 4K/120fps video recording?

I don't think this is real. Stupid design, either you cover the lenses or the flash/mic with greasy fingers.

There is a reason Apple places the lenses and flash/mic in one same corner.

I'm relieved that I find the back of the Air very unappealing, as there will be zero temptation to try one, regardless of how remarkably light and thin it turns out to be.

Is there a practical reason for the new camera bumper? Is it just to have a change?
Nope, and there’s a laundry list of reasons against it
I can’t stand this render, it looks terrible and it won’t work.

I think we're all in for a surprise as to why there's that larger black space at the top for the camera area. Maybe there's something else hidden behind there.

That zoom that’s been rumored the last few years

Love the coverage. This is reminding me of the Internet circuit 2009 through 2012, when the rumor mills were really rocking and rolling with new designs and leaks.

I like the mockup idea in the original post. It makes me wonder with this design if the cameras could actually be Mag cameras, as in you could buy another or better camera and it snaps in place on the back and connects to the iPhone.

Why I know this won't happen is Apple would not want to make something that makes it easier and cheaper to upgrade your phone so you could keep it longer. I can still dream though.

They need to have a heck of a reason to downgrade from Titanium to Aluminum. I’ve gotten used to having Ti on my phones now and not having to worry as much about scratches.

After heavy advertising the Titanium, why would they return to Aluminium on the Pro models? It scratches so easily 😭
Apple Math: Cheaper to make from Al than Ti = More profit for Apple = More money for Tim Cook

Is there a practical reason for the new camera bumper? Is it just to have a change?
1) If you lay it down on a desk, it would not wobble.
2) Apple probably likes the look of the Google Pixel phone. May translate to more sales.
3) More uniform look
4) Sell new cases
5) Users will complain if the same phone body ships year after year without any changes

1. Will be interesting what the expanded bump out has between the cameras and flash.
2. I wonder if the lower glass panel on the Pros might enable replacement of glass and battery below it more easily.
