What does a big bar provide in terms of value to the user?

Depends what's under it, I'd guess. Maybe the lens/sensor system needs more room (remember the front and rear cameras, FaceID and LIDAR are all clustered at the top of the device), maybe the rumored glass is there for better antenna reception of some sort. Maybe by jamming more stuff in the bump there's room in the phone for a larger battery. Some Pixel phones use a vapor chamber for heat dissipation (though apparently it's because their chips overheat more readily than Apple's) so maybe that's part of the answer. But to me that last one seems least likely of all, for several reasons.

If all these renders/designs pan out, then we'll see what's under the hood later in the year when we get teardowns.

It’s lipstick on a pig. At this rate, they probably felt the need to change something just for the heck of it. Their design team is probably bored out their minds.

Which phone lineup has consistently changed in that period? Even the Galaxy looks the same the last 3-5 years.
For me, this design is perfect, no need to change it.

Improve the camera, under the hood hardware, screen, notch, touchID, get the iOS right, Apple Intelligence to work... no need for a new bumper or design upgrade, for the sake of it.

I think we're all in for a surprise as to why there's that larger black space at the top for the camera area. Maybe there's something else hidden behind there.
Don't hold your breath on that idea. The renders make it look like there is a lot of space between the cameras and the flash/lidar. In reality, you could barely squeeze another lens in that space. It's really tight, especially on the standard Pro. And if these really are the frames, there won't be anything going in that space.

Does anyone know if the base iPhone 17 will feature an anti-reflective display too just like the pro models and 4K/120fps video recording?
The Pro models don't have any better anti-reflection than the standard models for the 16. But according to MacRumors, the answer is yes, it is coming to both phones on the 17.

What in a hell happened at Apple? Who green light this? Back to aluminum and uneven ass design ala iPhone 5 and 6? Jeez I guess I have to make some space on my 12pm to keep it for another few years 🤦‍♂️

Two part back is growing on me with the credit card glass portion. I'm sure Apple will make it look better than renders. The wide camera island, ehh, less so, but I want to hear if it's functional and gives us any major improvement. Is the pentaprism getting larger? If there's nothing new behind it inside what's the point

But otherwise I feel like this is a "let iPadOS be light so macOS can be heavy" moment, the Pro will be more Pro than ever, looks like a thicc boi, because the Slim exists for users who would also pay that premium for it being Slim instead of Thicc

As it stands, there doesn't seem to be any reason for that hideous camera island. There's no way any company would just extend a camera island across the whole phone just for a dollar store new look. Even if they put a small screen in there, it would be totally useless because of its size. I'm still wondering can this really be it? Lol

Mobile phone envy? Whatever floats one's boat. Maybe in high or junior high school?

At least with the long horizontal bump, I suspect there will be less hand-wringing over iPhone wobble. Though I imagine if someone exerts a few pounds of force on the upper left or right corner, they can get it to wiggle a little. Just another thing to cause massive unhappiness in one's life.
Came here to say the same. Sadly it’s not a youth thing either. I’m over 40 now and know of a lot of people who can barely afford groceries but always make sure they have the latest Pro Max. Good for me as a longtime shareholder I guess, but otherwise makes me cringe.

Depending on how far the lenses protrude from the island, it can prevent wobbling when on a table.

I think what bothers me the most, especially on the Pro Models, is the fact that we still have the three individual camera lenses that are pronounced. I wonder what the phone would look like if the lenses were all covered by one section of glass so that you didn’t see each individual lense? I kind of like the Pixel 9 Fold Camera where you have the two horizontal glass bars that cover the lenses.

I thought the rumored Air would have a titanium frame to prevent bends, but now MR is saying all the phones will be aluminum?
There are many types of aluminum. The same goes for titanium. I wonder what type of aluminum the iPhone 17 Pro/Max will have. Some older Apple iPhones and iPads were 6000 and 7000 series aluminum.

Regardless though, I will be using a case.

Can't say I'm excited that we're going backwards in materials for the Pro devices. Why switch to titanium only to go back to aluminum a couple years later? Titanium must be harder to bond with the glass or something. Still, this reeks of the iPhone design team being all over the place.

Ok, yes, the Pro camera bump is comically large and makes no sense.

BUT

Does a switch back to aluminum mean we might actually have some FUN Pro colors for once?! Trying to look at the bright side here!

Do you want a redesign for the sake of having something different? I'd rather prefer Apple to perfect their current design and material choices, rather than changing it constantly which in turn requires a significant retooling investment and ultimately, you as an end-client bear the cost of all of this. Furthermore, even if Apple completely changes the design, who cares? The vast majority of people will put a case on top of it right after unboxing and will never appreciate it. Also, there is a vast market of third-party accessories and Apple should be careful what it decides to change because it may ultimately lead to certain accessories no longer being supported and some clients may decide to hold on purchasing the new device because lack of compatibility with already purchased chargers, stands and so forth. In essence, drastic changes should be avoided. Finally, Apple's design team is not working only on the external design of the device but it is also involved in designing the software, so I'm not sure that they got bored or lazy in the recent years.
So you work for Apple....
