Hanks in an interview called the straight to ‌Apple TV‌+ release "an absolute heartbreak" because of the difference in picture and sound quality between an in-home television set and a movie theater.

This is only really true of optimum seating position in a top end theater with laser projection, advanced sound, etc.

But more than 99% of viewers won’t see it in those conditions. I think a good argument can be made that even a decent home theater setup (not that expensive these days) is a better experience than the average movie theater.

I’m guessing Tom Hanks mostly gets to see movies in premium scenarios.

After watching the movie, has anyone noticed that the movie doesn’t save to your watch history?

Waiting for the French version to be available... At the moment, the audio track is only available in English. The rest of the world is waiting for dubbed versions. I know... I speak English perfectly. But when I want to watch a movie, I prefer to watch in my language, when it's available. I know some will say I'm narrow-minded. But to these people, I'm asking: if your first language is English, what do you prefer? Watch a Spanish of a German movie in its original language with subtitles or wait for the English version to come out?

I speak only English and refuse to watch dubbed. I always watch in native language.

Sub, never dub!

To answer your question, I would opt for subtitles. I watch a lot of foreign films that way.

Sorry but I was disappointed with the movie I watched on the home theatre it sounded okay in Dolby Atmos but what was the point in the end of him turning around and going and sleeping in his bed was the end doesn’t make sense to me driving around in the ocean in a boat looking to blow something up exciting not.

I can understand his disappointment, he wants the audience to see it on a big screen with sound and I'm sure he receives compensation for it's box office. My preference is to watch it on my home system which includes sound that's run through my audio receiver. I cannot remember the last time I went to a movie theater, it was not a great experience.

Good news for both Apple TV+, demonstrating that hits can attract new subscriptions (à la Hamilton for Disney+), and studios, demonstrating that big budget films can at least still attract a large and perhaps comparable viewership.
What kind of watch numbers are we talking about? I didn’t see it listed.
That’s cause they’re not listed.

I noted they weren’t listed. That was the point of my post. The statement made by MR about the numbers is rather meaningless. Not much substance to the article.

"[T]he film is said to have a 'viewing audience commensurate with a summer theatrical box office big hit.'"

If it's a hit, it should be easy to substantiate this statement by providing the data. Personally, I'd love for the statement to be true. Perhaps more studios will release for home viewing movies they've held up.

Here's how I ended up watching Greyhound:
Plugged my iPhone into my hdmi adaptor on my Sony kdf tv. (Tom your right, sorry that's all I have.)
Opened the cbs app to watch star trek discovery with ads and the first ad was for Apple TV + featuring greyhound. I said that was stupid of them and I closed the cbs app and opened my Apple TV app and watched greyhound.

Didn't follow the book exactly. They could have left it open for a sequel with another voice taunting him over the radio for his next crossing.
I wonder how much of that 70 mil Tom got?
How to I set the audio not to be descriptive audio. I have to keep switching it off.

I enjoyed it. Could have been a touch longer and a bit more character development but I thought it was good.

Since STD and Picard are absolute trash, you did yourself a favor.

The number 72,200 presented at the end of the movie was a shock to me !

I thought I knew my History well, but apparently NOT well enough !

I'd be interested to know the financials in terms of what theaters pay to show a movie vs. what Apple is paying. If the studios are happy with the financial aspect of opening up more theatrical releases to streaming on day one, COVID has forever changed the way many of us will watch first-run movies. I hope the studios play the long game and keep the streaming option available once theaters are open again en masse.

Covid hasn't changed the way people watch first run movies.

What movie is going to bring in half a billion from streaming? Much less the legs to get tens of millions for several weekends.

It's not financial beneficial for them to stream movies. The moment it goes to streaming a crystal clear copy is available illegally. And you aren't going to get a billion dollar movie with the longevity that exist now.

Since when do they publish "substance" here? LOL. I noticed the "comparison" in the headline and kept looking for a comparison. Never found one either, so you're not alone.

Regarding the movie, it was entertaining from an audio/visual standpoint but was completely lacking from a story standpoint. No character development to speak of. If this actually made it to the theaters, I would guess it would have had a huge opening weekend but would fade fast. It would not have been a massive hit.

Did anyone else notice that the picture seemed slightly vertically elongated? Most noticeable in 2-3 person full body shots. Looked like they didn't quite get the movie to TV conversion right. We watched on an LG OLED 55.

I was not that crazy about the movie. There was not a scene in it with half the power of that first cannon shot out of the fog in Master and Commander. Seemed to me they made it in a way so that actors would never have to be on an actual ship, not even in a giant tank. All their scenes on a sound stage (which didn't move very much for a ship) and then all the sea shots were graphics or models or maybe stock video. Two units that never interacted except in the editing room.

It was interesting to see an ASW movie from the POV of the destroyer, rather than the sub.
