So, according to Apple, THIS is a great use of widgets:

They must be joking.

It's beyond absurd. This was the most exciting iOS release ever, for just this reason, and they snatch away the customization that made it great.

Not without Jailbreaking, no.

I think he can actually, if he has the .ipa, but his friend will have to register his device with the account the app was purchased under.

Not that I'm defending Apple's actions, the difference is kindle's widget opens up its own app, not any user assigned app. Or action. Most of the widgets open up their parent app. when interacted with. I can actually see where Apple made the distinction, even though it's a stupid one!!

I don't care for the reasons why it was pulled although it's still as fishy as something really fishy smelling of fish.

But it's the manner in which it was done..... They (Apple) reviewed the app, granted it entry to the app sanctuary of the "It's our way or the highway App Store", let umpteen users pay for it and then pull it.

No wonder Android owners take the P out of the iPhone.

I've heared on the grapevine that very shortly Apple are going to stop allowing left handed people owning an IPhone as it could potentially have a knock on effect on how the widget home screen is accessed, but on the other hand........

Yes, you can use it normally. Consider yourself lucky. But if you have a 6 Plus (like me) you are stuck with a max of 8 icons in the widget due to a bug in the original version. He had submitted a fix for this but it never made it through.

Actually, it is a glitch, but it can be bypassed (did it on my 6 plus). Drag an icon from the bottom row down past the bottom row, and a new row will pop up (in launcher app). You have to fill that row, however, to have it appear on the widgets. It also, for some reason, won't let me have more than 5 rows of apps there.

It has happened before and will happen. Sometimes some review rules aren't being applied by all reviewers and things get through that shouldn't and get pulled later, sometimes the rules aren't specific enough and get adjusted and something might get pulled because of that, sometimes it seems that a new rule might be needed for whatever reason (because it was overlooked originally or not considered or something new shows up that needs to be addressed in some way) and things can get pulled based on that. Again, nothing new or surprising really.

In one case the app widget can open its own app or do something within its app, in the other case it deals with other apps. The difference is fairly obvious. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but there's clearly a difference and for whatever reason one of those things (opening other apps) is something that Apple has decided won't currently be allowed.

So in theory, Apple doesn't want a widget to open a program unless its its own program?

Twitter widget only opens Twitter
Facebook widget only opens Facebook

I get that and I'm trying to understand what's so bad about letting a widget open different apps.

All I see is these developers continuing to develop new apps but for the Jailbroken community.

Time to get my wife to send me a cake with a file in it.

Seems like that's the case. Up until iOS 8 Apple didn't even want widgets at all. I guess baby steps.

Seems we all want too much too soon.

But are the iPhone faithful going to patiently wait for the j,k or even the LPhone to get a smidge of customisation other than changing the wallpaper?.

Many people aren't looking for more or don't really care strongly enough about it over many other things that they like about iPhone/iOS. And surely there's quite a bit more than changing the wallpaper even before iOS 8, and especially with iOS 8 (even if it still doesn't offer 100% or even 99% what everyone wants).

"Launcher" permanently removed from the app store

Since there is an app that does indeed deal with other apps, I.e it opens other apps and allows quite an variety of customization options for app launching.
It seems to me like it is the placement in the dropdown menu(widget) that is the issue for Apple, since Launch Center does not place itself there.

Launch Center Pro by Contrast

Just my observations and thoughts.
Damn shame i only found this thread after the Launcher app was pulled.. (Didn't know of it before hand) Seems i (and many others) missed out on a great app :(

Yes because I do not like the alternatives. Patience is a virtue ;)

Color me cynical but it sound like Apple has plans to build this functionality into iOS at some point.

Some good valid points raised in this thread, great community.

I know it's marmite for some but I'd just like the option to add my own little tweaks to the look and operation of my iPhone, just hope I'm still around when they finally give us the option.

Until then I'll continue to use what I feel is one of the best apps released on the iPhone without the need for Jailbreaking.

I'll second that, it really is a great app!! Now if only BiteSMS was native... we can all have dreams right?!?!? (dreams of locking his texts, from prying eyes)

Who cares about people who don't want this extra customization. No one is forcing you to use it. For those of us who do want it (and enjoy everything else about apple products) it is frustrating to see it and then have it taken away.

That's not really what that post was in reply to.

That said, Apple has their own ideas of what they want to have and don't wan to have--that's how it's always been--and in this case they don't want to have this type of functionality offered a by a third party app through a widget. Again, that's not to say it's right or wrong, just that's how it is, and it's hardly new or surprising in any way really.

as stated above this may appear soon in ios natively as apple has hired jailbreakers before cause of their good work, sure this isnt a jb app but the same concept can apply

(anyone remember comex, i think hes the one that made the jb app for the first type of banner notifications that started in ios 5?)
