Do you have ANY other evidence that Apple plans to do something other than "stay tuned"?

Precedent. Specifically the coma issue.
No public apology - just fixed.

When the CEO say "stay tuned" - maybe its a good idea to do just that.

Lets see what we are staying tuned for - before we start jumping to conclusions.

Heck - if you trust the guy enough to buy a whole new type of £500 phone off him, why not give him a chance to fix any issues?

Cmaier, don't waste your keyboard on that clown.

No - listen to this one.

Many other problems were not fixed in various Apple devices.

Apple has publicly stated it does not intend to fix this. Why do you have so little trust in Apple that you refuse to take them at their word?

Name two that were as high profile in terms of seriousness and units sold.

This is the big seller for the year, you can bet they have their best minds trying to find a simple fix first, before the more drastic options are rolled out.

The last thing they want is a reason for people to criticise what is otherwise a pretty splendid achievement.

Because what the marketing guys tell the salesmen to say is one thing.
What the CEO says carries more weight.

If he says 'stay tuned' - why should we not assume there is something worthwhile to stay tuned for?

Cracks in the cubes comes to mind. Dying time capsule power supplies come to mind. I'm sure there have been other problems as well.

If he says 'stay tuned' - why should we not assume there is something worthwhile to stay tuned for?

If he says "there is no reception problem" and the solution is "just don't hold it that way," should we not assume that 's Apple's official position? Those seem MUCH more direct and clear than a nebulous "stay tuned" (which probably means "stay tuned for our explanation of why there is no reception issue.") You completely discount his (and Apple's) clear and concise statements ("there is no problem" "don't hold it that way" "all phones do that" "we will not give free bumpers because there is no problem") and rest your entire argument on two words that could mean anything, and that immediately followed Steve saying NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THE PHONE.

And all of that would be fine with me - you're entitled to your opinion. But instead, what you do is accuse everyone else, who are relying on the clear and concise statements made by apple, of somehow being irrational. When your entire argument rests on arguing that "there is no reception problem. stay tuned" means "there is no reception problem. There is some other problem. We have a fix in mind for it. We won't tell you what it is or when it will arrive, but it will be great," you cannot possibly think you are the rational one and we are being hysterical.

You said take Steve at his word. Trust Apple. Well, we are. Steve said there's nothing to see here. Apple says no fix is forthcoming, and it's user error. We trust that is Apple's position, because that's what they state their position to be. Assuming anything else in light of actual statements to the contrary is irrational.

yeah, good luck with that lawsuit. This is apple, not toyota. This is a scattered incident but does not have the numbers to be a product defect. I've tried every way possible to replicate the signal loss by holding the phone and can't get mine to drop from 5 bars. And my 3gs only got 3 bars where I live. Iphone 4 is an improvement.

I hear Toyota is giving out free Bumpers... Oh SNAP!

Good. He has said 3 things:

1. "Don't hold it that way" - which is the correct technical workaround for the observed unwanted phenomenon. Not pretty, not a fix - but its simple and it works and is expressed concisely.

2. "there is no reception issue" - which could either be a lie, sophistry or that the attenuation issue is caused by something else other than reception.

3. "Stay tuned" - which means that we should wait because a further announcement will be made when more information is known.

Today he said it's all just rumors and bad reception areas.

yeah, good luck with that lawsuit.

What lawsuit ?

BTW, every phone is affected. The thing is, the phone suffers a 20 db attenuation. However, the way the bars are programmed in iOS4 could mean you never drop a bar since 5 bars goes pretty low in the spectrum of signal.

iPhone 4 is the worst offender in the "touch antenna, lose signal" category.

"You may be working from bad data. Not your fault. Stay tuned. We are working on it."

Today's quote. Again "stay tuned," but this time even more evidence that "stay tuned" doesn't mean a fix is coming, but rather means they are working on trying to prove that there isn't a problem. The entire email exchange, where steve repeatedly denies any problem and says it's a bad reception area makes it even more clear.

They are just going to change the bars so the five bar region is smaller, so that dropped bars don't seem as extreme.

And explain how no other technology company goes swaggering around getting victimized by fake email exchanges? If this proves anything it's leading economic indicators are .... wait a second <epiphany> ... I'm selling this stock before it tanks... brb, I must now go make the single worst decision of my life.

I don't understand a thing you just wrote, or how any of i relates to my point.

Sort of along the lines of self-depricating humor, which I don't get all that much either. I suppose it wouldn't help if I relayed a story a friend told today how he was happy to get an Apple Genius appointment quickly because he told them he tried the death grip and his back light stopped working? I believe what I might be deficient in is a solid foundation in smileys. among other things.

(fyi, I thought you thought the quote was accurate, but appears you were using it to make a point, irregardless of its fiction)

Yeah, didn't matter if it was his quote since I only used it as another datapoint same as his earlier statements. All of which still tells us nothing.

But nothing, it seems, is increasing now at a measuable and predictable rate. I found a nice clear analysis that appears to explain all previously mentioned legitimate concerns and give a simple and elegant prescription for what might just lead us out of this mess (I had to try it a few times to get it to work):
