That's an interesting theory but if not a new CPU (even an A16 would be deemed an upgrade) then what are they doing that's worthy of replacing the 2022 model if not replacing the A15 CPU?

If the bog standard iPad only got a price cut last time (and that comes with A14 CPU), could it get a bump to A15 with 6Gb?

And if that's the case then AppleTV with no CPU change (except maybe for more RAM? The precedent being that the iPhone 14 got a version of the A15 from the iPhone 13 Pro - with 6Gb RAM) suggests something else - maybe we're about to see that rumoured variant with a camera inside a sound bar?

Mind you, on that theory there's 5 iPhones coming up in the next few months with the same CPU (assuming it's the A18), so that suggests the much rumoured SE4 will indeed have the A18 - although it could be a binned version of course).

I honestly think the rumours are conflating two devices. I think the 'home accessory' is going to be a home device with camera like the echo show and the soundbar being something similar to what Roku did.

A soundbar with a camera sounds like a super weird product. Although they have put Facetime on Apple TV so maybe some kind of camera support makes sense for that.

Not sure why I would need a screen. One of my other IOS device would do nicely as a screen. Like Ring Security Controller. Use an app, put the controller wherever it fits. Will see what comes out.
You could always use VoiceOver <grin>.
How do you get the video/sound to the iOS device?
I’m possibly missing some Apple technology.

The article is talking about a Home Accessory and Apple TV.
I’d prefer a fully loaded Apple TV which already has a history and HDMI.

This is actually a great idea.
I feel like the reason their speakers don’t take off is because for most, you will need two to get good sound and at $300+ each it is a hard sell for many, especially with them not having Bluetooth and the woes that come with Siri. A soundbar could do the job of the speakers + the Apple TV (and could incorporate hdmi in/eArc so it doesn’t rely on Airplay which can be finicky.

Apple is definitely releasing some kind of HomePod spinoff. I did a survey for them a while back and one of the questions referenced a display on the HomePod.

I get where you are coming from....

But integrating ATV into just one soundbar isnt going to solve much. :(
There are so many bars even from the same manufacturer.
And I've bought a number of them over the years.
Each has strengths and weaknesses and different sound profiles.

Audio purists still loathe the soundbar approach but convenience outweighs sound for many people.
And home environments are different to showrooms.

The public largely see a plug and play wireless subwoofer as about all they want to do.
Even adding separate rear speakers (even wireless) is too much of a stretch.
Hence we get all the audio trickery of bouncing made up signals off ceilings and calling it Atmos.
It can sound somewhat convincing at times.
Or at least pleasant with more feel than stereo.
Other times it can be a muddy mess with murky speech.

On top of that, Netflix audio is so bad on tvs people of all ages watch with subtitles.
With a good soundbar, it can sound good. But badly mixed audio is hard to improve later on.

Add in hearing perception and deafness and it's like the Holy Grail. You wont build a device that suits everyone. :(

AirPlay does have some issues.
But anything wireless will. But less wires makes for happier installs.
We've even seen Samsung release Atmos Wireless (which is lossy).

As always, audio has many standards and some will passionately argue which sounds best.
There was always a group who argued they could hear the difference between speaker cables that cost $100 a meter. :)

For some use cases, having a device always be in one place is valuable in and of itself. Such would be the case with a home hub with a screen, for example.

If I leave an iPad lying around, god knows where I’ll find it the moment my kids get their sticky hands on it and now how do I dim the lights in my tv room
Smart switches, I hate the smart tech that requires your device and can’t be controlled through conventional means, that’s not a smart device imo

Hoping the new AppleTV is just a cheaper version of the current one with streamlined features. Streaming content is barely 4K UHD + Atmos, and anything beyond that is not even remotely close to what most TV hardware or bandwidth can display. Honestly, it’ll probably be a match to the current iPhone chipset that can handle AI. Not sure what AppleTV AI would even do, but hey, they need to keep that price justifiable.

And having to use voice, and remember what every device is called and the control setting it uses... a nightmare the more you add.

"Siri turn the Kitchen Bench light on to 50% Light Blue..."

Walk in, press button. Done.

Remote app use is great when you are away and want to make it look like you are home.

I'm glad to hear references to a new Apple TV. Want one but would rather wait for an updated one.

having just bought a new one, I'm not sure what Apple TV is missing that that can't be addressed on the software side

maybe cheaper?

They might be bringing back Apple WiFi router I think it was called the apple airport
I would LOVE to see AAPL go back to making Airport routers. Given how dependent the entire ecosystem is on WiFi, AAPL really should focus on getting us reliable high speed WiFi.

Gods forbid if Tim Apple ever gets Siri to accomplish something more useful than turning on a light or playing a song. Gee, how about self-diagnosis of self-help with various software/hardware issues?
In my experience siri is nearly incapable of playing the correct song. Yes, it can technically play songs, but good luck getting the same song you ask for…

Because very few people are going to spend $500 on an Apple TV. An Apple TV with an M-series chip is a Mac mini.
Apple TV with M chip might not be necessary.
In a way, the mini can probably do everything ATV can, just with a Mac interface. Apple controls everything.
They don't pay someone else for anything. If they didn't need so much profit, products could be priced more favorably.

Sounds cool. A home-based device with a screen should have a lot of utility.
I have an iPad above my desk connected to the surveillance cameras so I can work and monitor the front door for packages and people. The great thing about the Apple ecosystem is that it allows being connected to the same mouse and services where I can interact with it without reaching for it. I can imagine a lot of apps being created for such a home device.

You also need a $1000 iPhone to play music on your $300 speaker where Siri laughs at you anytime you make a basic request. Non wonder they are a tough sell.

I miss airport a lot. I hate that I pay to rent a router from my ISP and still have to remember to manually back up my mac to an external drive.

Just more proof they have become so disconnected from what people want! They should be developing a folding iPhone!

I still think Apple should make an all-in-one Time Capsule/Airport/Apple TV device. I know this isn’t that but if I say it enough maybe someone at Apple will realise it’s a good idea.

Honestly, I don’t really care what the actual device ends up being. The important thing to me is that Apple appears to be making a firm commitment to making HomeKit/HomeOS actually work. There’s a massive opportunity here for Apple to be the leader in secure smart home tech.

But if I were to make a wish list, the device would be a dedicated home hub that’s also a wi-fi router.
