Apple's new M2 chip is up to 20 percent faster than the M1 chip when it comes to multi-core performance, according to leaked M2 benchmarks from the upcoming 13-inch MacBook Pro that were discovered on Geekbench today.

The M2, which runs at 3.49GHz compared to 3.2GHz for the M1, earned a single-core score of 1919, which is roughly 12 percent faster than the 1707 single-core score of the M1 13-inch MacBook Pro. The M2 earned a multi-core score of 8928, up about 20 percent from the 7419 score of the M1 model.

Apple has said that the M2 chip is up to 18 percent faster than the M1, so the Geekbench 5 test is right in line with Apple's claims.

As for the Metal benchmark, the M2 chip scored 30627, a notable improvement over the 21001 score earned by the M1. The M2 chip offers up to a 10-core GPU, compared to the 8-core maximum of the M1.

The M2 chip is available in the new 2022 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro. Apple has not provided information on when the MacBook Air will launch, but the new MacBook Pro will be available for pre-order starting Friday, June 17.

Didn’t Apple say it’s up to 35% faster, but at a higher power consumption? If the benchmark is utilizing this type of workload it‘s disappointing, especially if the 20% is drawing more power which will turn into earlier throttling on the fabless MBA and less batterie life.

EDIT: Never mind, read that wrong, this is CPU only.

Yes, these new M2 MacBooks could have worse battery life under load than the M1 MacBooks.
M2 MacBook Air should throttle quite a bit, especially under GPU load.

I've been saying that the M2 MBA and the base 14-inch MBP should not have much difference in CPU performance. M1 Pro still wins in graphics performance though.

While 12% single core performance increase is nothing to sneeze at, most MBA users won’t notice the difference in speed as most won’t be doing multi core tasks anyway. The other hardware upgrades are going to be more noticeable.

And speakers, display quality and so forth. I upgraded from a M1 MBA to a base 14" MBP not for the CPU but for the GPU, XDR screen and extra ports. The fact the 14" can use two monitors out of the box was a big factor as well.

I already felt the CPU speed of the base M1 MBA was more than good enough for 95% of uses and I edit 4k video, create 3D animation, develop mobile apps, edit raw photography and did graphic design with it.

AMD has been doing about 15% IPC per generation which is quite a bit higher than 20% multithreaded; but they obviously started from a lower place and have different design goals.

Edit: Butchered that quote 🤣

That is actually insane. If you follow other mainstream CPU. They do not get a 20% increase per generation
Actually they do, when increasing the clock speed by 10% and adding 20% more area. Intel have done this for many years on the tock generations, and on the ticks they reduce the process size. I hadn't realised the clock was so comparatively slow on M1, but this leaves scope for incremental speed increases for at least a decade to impress Apple fans with "amazing" increases. When they reach 5Ghz these will be really snappy chips, they already do a lot per cycle and when that cycle is shortened they'll be able to do a lot really fast!
