It’s interesting to read ‘the notch’ comments on sites like this, but outside the tech world, for anyone that’s owned the latest iPhones with a notch, I’ve never heard it mentioned by anyone. Simply because consumers probably don’t care and they see the greater picture of how convenient face ID is, which overrides the aesthetic of a ‘cut out’ at the top of the display. If Apple decides to minimize it, so be it, but it’s never been an issue affecting the iPhone anyway whatsoever.
the same can be said for Touch ID which to me worked much faster and better. There are many situations where faceid isn't wonderful. only great when using the phone directly in front of your face.
We had no choice but to jump into faceid. We didn't ask for it. The bigger screen makes it better yes but I still prefer Touch ID after owning the x and the XS max for almost three combined years now.
Same thing with the notch. People put up with it because its all you can buy with a newer iPhone unless you want to buy old hardware with horrible top and bottom bezels. So people put up with it because they have no choice. Ive had numerous friends ask about the notch when the phones where new its not like its invisible. It does cut into the UI a lot with things especially video and games.
To me there's a big difference between people not complaining because they have no other choice in iPhones so most won't complain about it because it won't change anything. To people that actually complain but still nothing comes out of it and we still end up buying the newest iPhone because we have no choice.
Im sure most everybody would "prefer" a full screen phone with touch id under the glass and Face ID under the glass to what we have now.
This is a transition point in technology. We will get there soon.

really only should matter to people that go case less

Like me. The design and shape of the iPhone is beautiful and should be openly displayed. That’s how they designed it, not to be wrapped in some other shell, otherwise the phone would be flimsy plastic like all the old flip phones (and yeah somewhat similar iPhone 3GS and earlier).

(Speaking for my iPhone SE which currently remains the most unique iPhone design ever made; the ONLY iPhone in that shape and color: 4” rose gold)

I mean with a smaller 5.4" iPhone we basically have to expect the notch will shrink at least somewhat.

I love the notch, i’m pretty happy to see it still in iPhone 12 design! Smaller is better for sure, maybe more space for control center/system icons.
BTW I don’t like idea of widget in home screen, I would be more iOS/clean to have them only in one page as it is now.

Easy solution... Don't put widgets on your home screen. And those of us who want to, will. It's wins all around.

I know more people without cases than with. If the phone was ugly like the 6 than I’d hide it, but it’s too good looking to hide away. Probably the best looking iPhone since the 4/4S. The camera bump just seems lazy. I’m sure there are challenges with it meeting the thinness demands. But it spoils what could have been a perfect device.

I just want 1080p video on my $1800 MacBook.
Absolutely ridiculous they can put 4K 60FPS on the front facing camera of a $700 smartphone (iPhone 11), and can’t put 1080p in a top of the line $1800 MacBook.
It's far easier to put a high quality camera in a smartphone because you have a lot more thickness available. Trying to physically fit a large sensor (and appropriate optics) in a few mm thick screen enclosure will be a huge technical challenge that will no doubt be addressed in the future.

Not to mention most video conferencing applications will hammer video quality anyway... this is basically a non issue.

the iPhone is already perfect now, otherwise apple wouldnt release it. In fact, I would say its not thin enough. iPhone has always been about thinness and how cool it looks.

I guess the lid is too thin to host a better camera. Phones are thicker, so the selfie camera can be high quality.
Even the 16'' MBP has the same 720p camera, so I don't think it is a matter of containing costs, they could afford 1080p or even better camera if they could manage to put them into the lid. But either they make the lid thicker, for this sole reason, or they design it with some sort of bump in the middle to have more room for the camera. I wouldn't say no to the latter, would look weird maybe but with more and more remote calls being made these days having a better camera would help.

I was highly considering getting the new Air, but WTF is that web cam? Especially now where most of us are working remotely, that is beyond unacceptable.

Pretty much. Oversimplified, more resolution requires a larger sensor for all else to be equal, which requires a bigger gap between it and the lens for all else to be equal (i.e. it's thicker). Unless you want a camera bump on your MacBook screen (or a 1080p camera with tiny pixels and extremely poor low light results) this is as good as it gets.

There is only one thing that is missing from the iPhone 11 - a TouchID sensor integrated in the display. FaceID turned out to be useless in Corona times. Either you have to use a short/weak password or you have to remove your mask constantly to unlock your phone. Many Android phones already integrate a touch sensor into their display.

I would immediately drop my iPhone 11 Pro for a SE2 that integrates a fingerprint sensor into the display and drops that ugly notch.

I am a true believer in the 3 years upgrade cycle for the iPhone and I always go for the top if the line model.
My path was 4s - 7 plus - 11 pro max

I will break the rule when a model gets a drastic change and dramatic improvements overall but that seems to be relevant over this period of 3 years usually.

iPhone 12 will for sure be interesting but If it stays within these boundaries of design I see no compelling reason to break the rule.
I am pretty sure the widgets and other functionalities related to iOS are going to be available to 11 pros for a while.

That awkward moment when everyone realizes the back of the new iPhone was shown for years.

The 'widgets' remind me a bit of Windows Phone's live tiles, which was actually quite a nice balance between organised and dynamic. Looking forward to this feature if legit!
I'm not sure how I would feel about that. Live Tiles was visual cacophony, with too much happening everywhere. It was visual overload. If Apple found a way to streamline it and reduce the visual clutter, then it might be useful.

Also, is it my imagination or is the bezel in those drawings a lot wider than current iPhones?

That could look pretty cool being able to mix widgets in the home screen among icons. Lots of info at a glance stuff. I was a huge windows fan (still am!) and this is the stuff I miss.

Apple will never get rid of the notch, it was put there by design. They moved away from the iconic round home button and had to come up with something else. Of course everyone else copied them but still. Also in a year of owning a notch phone I haven’t once noticed it while using it. Except when I come here and read the odd complaint about it
