I'm just waiting to see what the M4 Max brings us. Please, some good GPU bumps this time. PLEASE.

The packaging is last year’s box, an obvious red flag.

This wouldn't be the first time that Apple has reused old boxes for new Macs. In fact, it's happened many times before. They even put new labels over the old ones in some cases.

Some people cling onto that box art theory way too tightly. The ignore the new Quick Start Guide and power adapter packaging. Apple has reused the same box art several times.

People realize these devices are activated using VPNs, right?

The irony is these VPNs and free tools have been pushed by U.S. government agencies like Open Technology Fund.

can u connect to vpn at the activation stage of the apple device? i think no, cause it's either Lte/5g/wifi connection allowed at the activation stage. although the possibility of connecting to VPN and then sharing wifi on mac may work. but the reality is that most of people who have money to buy apple products in russia now mostly too dumb to do so

Yeah, you download the VPN app on iPhone. MacBook connects to iPhone via hotspot. Who doesn’t know how to do this?

People who have money to buy Apple devices in sanctioned regions can afford to ask/pay the store clerk to do it.

Worst case scenario is these devices are preactivated in Turkey, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. where they originate from anyway. Then shipped to Russian customers and resellers.

I would just like to know if I can run 3 external displays with the lid closed on the base M4.

You know something has gone horribly wrong, when leaks of this magnitude are not even the same level as iPhone 4 leak event back then, when on the surface, it would have been far more serious and impactful.

probably some shipments were stolen. ruzzkies in the mix, so no surprise here.

I really wish MR would stop sensationalizing this and trying to put this leak on the level of the IP4 leak. These are hardly comparable. This appears to be a stolen carton from a warehouse. And this product hardly has the anticipation from the public of any iPhone release- let alone the massive and first major re-design that was the IP4- which was inconceivably left at a freaking bar by some irresponsible employee who in hindsight never should have been given access to that device. The IP4 leak also lead to massive security and policy changes with in Apple. I am sure they are investigating how this happened as well but it's hardly going to have the same impact. This leak, if real, basically amounts to some updated specs on a product box. Stop Click-baiting FFS!

By the way, the iPhone 16 also appeared in stores a day before the start of global sales.

It's an intentional leak because no way these are sneaking out of secure manufacturing site without Apple blocking their device IDs and wasn't YouTube blocked internally there? It gives their country positive PR and in return generates interest for Apple against Intel Lunar Lake that competes on battery life and performance with M3/M4 at significantly lower price.

Makes complete sense.

Apple probably said, "Let's leak our latest product to one of the most sanctioned countries in the world. Make sure they speak Russian."

"Oh and while we're at it, make sure the reviewer looks as much as a Chechen fighter as possible. We wanna make a good first impression!"

He definitely looks Russian and not Chechen but even Chechnya is ruled by Russia.

As for your other posts regarding VPN use:

https://9to5mac.com/2024/09/28/apple-cooperating-with-russia-to-remove-vpn-apps-from-app-store/

With YouTube and VPN blocks internally and blatant lack of manufacturing security and lost device blocking, it doesn't make any sense except for concerted intentional leak.

All someone has to do is change their country selection in the App Store from Russia to U.S. to download VPN apps.

Russia has some of the most sophisticated software guys in the world. I doubt a simple block will stop them.

We don't know if it's still possible to activate these M4 MacBook Pros today. We just know they activated them a few days ago, maybe earlier this month.

Given how the supply chain works, and the volume of interesting material flowing through it prior to a major Apple release, I'm if anything slightly surprised that warehouse-side thefts of soon-to-be-released products like this apparently is don't happen more often.

On the other hand, if you did manage to steal a pallet of MacBook Pros a month before they're supposed to go on sale, I have to question the wisdom of trying to unload them now. Get your hands on one unit? Sure, unload it for a big profit and/or get some attention. But get your hands on 200 of them and the calculation changes.

Yes, you might be able to get 3-4x retail for some of them, but are there enough YouTubers and tech me-firsters willing to buy obviously stolen goods at extremely inflated prices to sell more than a few at that markup? And even if there are, you're painting a huge target on your back, whereas if you just waited a month and settled for retail it's just a run-of-the-mill theft that's going to generate vastly less attention--and if there's anything I'd think you don't want as a thief, it's attention.

Then again, criminals aren't exactly known for making great cost-benefit decisions.
