Highlights of iPhone 4G:

OLED display

Matte Cover

The above two hardware upgrade might be saved for next gen.

Apple could not only wow us with same techniques like battery life & better camera.

It is reasonable to keep the OLED and Matte cover for next year since the software still the reason Apple keeps the fans

Hmmm I have a feeling they reacted to Palm released the pre and decided to just keep the 3G enclosure so they could get it out quicker.

I bet we'll see an update before xmas that has a Matte finish.

Don't worry guys, an insider source tells me that Apple will soon be unveiling a new "unibody" iPhone carved from a solid block of obsidian (black volcanic glass) harvested from the heart of an inactive volcano.

The unibody iPhone will be marketed as the "iPhone RAZR", with the tagline "Hot as magma, cool as Fonzi". It will retail for $1.00 (along with a 3-year contract with Cricket for only $108.00 a month).

Here's what happened

Steve Jobs is obsessed with two industrial design enhancements: thin and shiny.

In Steve's absence, the voice of reason throughout the company concluded that a matte case would be easier to grip and show less scratches. However, Steve just happened to pop by from his sabbatical and nearly bursted an appendix when he saw the iPhone 3GS wasn't shiny. So he ordered them all back to be polished by June 19. That's why the phones weren't ready at WWDC.
;)

What a great story! :D Probably true too.

Oooooooohhh shiny!

Anyone how is smart would put a good case on it. I had mine naked and sexy for a while until my 6 y/o cousin threw it while playing with that light saber app. I now have a nice crack in the screen :(

I agree. Anyone who is smart will use a case with their iPhone. Fortunately, the iPhone comes with a case included. It's shiny plastic and wraps all the electronics into one nice little package. I prefer this case, which is permanent and designed by the engineers at Apple, to anything I've ever seen a 3rd party come up with.

There is no need to increase the bulk of your phone with a 3rd party case. It doesn't need to look brand new at the end of using it for 1-2 years. You might get less for resale value, but if there was an accessory that made my phone thinner I would buy it. That's essentially what I'm doing by not protecting it with an extra bulky case.

The lesson here is to not give your expensive electronic device to a six year old so he can swing it around like a maniac.

well, it is possible to replace a screen and casing right?

will it be possible for this case to be an upgrade for both IPhone 3G and 3G S?
'Head to your retail Apple store and get your new Matte casing!'
just crappin', don't mind me

actually i was just thinking if it is possible to replace ourself, why not ask who actually manufacture this casing to start selling to ppl for us to do a self-upgrade lol

If Apple did switch cases near launch it was probably influenced by the decision to keep the 8 GB 3G. People who buy it are not immediately recognized as having a "lessor" phone. One can buy the $99 phone and look as cool as someone who buys the $299 phone. I think it is a smart move.

Just another evil plot...

My guess is that they left it out so that they could include it into the next iPhone, which will most likely release next year. That way they can say, "Hey! You have an iPhone... Oh wait, you have that old ugly 3GS one. Too bad. We just released the newer, faster, and sexier iPhone 3GM (Matte). So if you want to be cool like everyone else, you'll need to upgrade to this one... What's that, you're still six months away from being upgrade eligible because you upgraded to the iPhone 3GS? Well that's okay, just give us another $100 and we'll let you have this one.":D

Something tells me you're don't qualify for an upgrade.

The reason:

The reason they pulled this concept at the last minute is quit obvious it leaked and apple was not happy about it..... Or the simple part. the rubber coated backs like on all phones Ive ever seen have one thing in common with each other and that is that they peel and once they start peeling they don't stop and before you know it you have a worn out looking piece of crap,..... so maybe after test driving one of these bad boys apple realized that allot of returns would be being made shortly after selling these models and saw the loss in money they would suffer and all the unhappy customers they would have... for what i feel is a cool idea but not a logical one for apple to make for such a high up the line type of device rubber back not going to happen...:apple::apple:

That would be sooo awesome. Like opening a surprise present on Christmas that you knew nothing about before hand...

Sucks that people would probably take Apple to court over it.

if by awesome, you mean one of the following:
1. False advertising
2. Instantaneous lawsuit
3. Funny
4. Really crappy for those people who think it looks horrible.

then yes, you are right... TOTALLY AWESOME. ;)

quit obvious? I'll overlook the typo and just point out that there is no way you could possible make that statement w/ any degree of certainty.

I found it hard to finish your paragraph.

My thoughts:

Apple hasn't announced iPhone 3,1. Anyone else catch that?
Possibly a matte OLED (maybe iChat) iPhone pro ish thing released holiday season. For some reason the 3g S doesn't seem like a TRUE sequel. My guess: 32gb iPhone pro with iChat and oled screen and matte case for around 600 dollars Christmas time. (or 500 if at&t drops price of unsubsidized by 100)

Ya and frog's asses aren't water tight.

Something tells me you're don't qualify for an upgrade.
How'd you guess, LOL. Seriously, the most simple solution from both Apple and AT&T's part would be to either (A) Have AT&T bring the upgrade commitment cycle down to 12 months, or (B) Apple shouldn't release a new iPhone but about every 18 months. Many customers (myself included) were extremely confused at how Apple and AT&T would offer the pricing for iPhone customers this go around, on account of how they handled the situation for the 3G.

Then again the look of the iPhone is pretty classy, so why mess with a good thing.

"Why mess with a good thing" has never been the way Apple has thought. This announcement was sad on so many levels, this being one of them. What makes Apple unique, and a company that I love, is that they always change what works... this time they didn't, and it was really discouraging.

I was telling someone about the iPhone 3GS today. She asked me what was new about it, and I said video. Immediately her face lit up, and she said "Wow! So you can video chat on the iPhone now?". I said "No... now you can take videos." "So what?", she replied, "every other phone in the world can do that."

I think that just about sums up my feelings for iPhone 3GS, including the 3.0 software... its just playing catch up to the rest of the world. Video recording, copy and paste, MMS, Voice Command... these are all features that should have been included day one, and if not day one, at least in iPhone 3G. I think this product release may be one of the worst in Apple's recent history, and it saddens me that Apple has seemingly halted innovation simply because they don't need to innovate to sell phones. Hopefully Apple introduces something fantastic by years end... something like the original iPhone to excite and energize the fan base that right now is pretty dull. Whether it be the rumored iTablet, or amazing Apple TV developments, or something else completely, I think anyone can agree that Apple needs to do something... because just bumping specs of a phone, and adding features that should never not have been there in the first place, not changing the design whatsoever, and then acting like this product is revolutionary is just not gonna cut it.

I'm pretty sure you are the smartest person I know right now. Thank you for your comments, seriously... I COMPLETELY agree with you and you articulated what I've been telling people for days.

Don't call it a new phone, call it a minor upgrade... it seems like this will be the black sheep once you go back and look at all the iphone generations.

oh man, you must not have kids... HAH! Or for that matter, you must have never MET a child!

It really seems like Apple held back from what was originally planned (and the rumors of early Spring) due to rushing releases because of fear of competition and the economy. It seems as if Apple made some rush decisions 4-12 weeks ago. As I mentioned in another thread, I believe Apple was going to announce BR (8.2 w/ Blu-ray references, would have coincided with new Pro lineup, etc.) but didn't, perhaps because it wouldn't have been ready in time. I also believe Apple was going to use the matte case, but didn't, perhaps because it wouldn't have been ready as soon. Also, the $99 3G seems like a rushed decision to quickly eliminate Palm from the game immediately. SL is shipping without Marble and BR support, perhaps so it could be out before Windows 7. At the $29 price point it will seem like a bargain compared to Windows 7 upgrade and full prices.

Apple slashed prices across the board.

Apple was scared, but now that it's far more competitive in terms of notebook pricing and phone features, I expect Mac marketshare to increase and iPhone marketshare to sharply increase. In the Fall when the 64GB iPod Touch is released, Apple was maintain its already huge PMP marketshare and ward of Zune HD.

Apple definately rushed the iphone out in time for the pre. Its obvious because they didn't even wait to release iphone 3.0 until the whole MMS and tethering situation was taken care of by att.

In my fantasy world:
Apple has a better Iphone planned but it wasn't ready for the wwdc and that they just released the Iphone 3g s so they could stay ahead of the market while they are trying to finish up on the super awesome "Iphone Video" with a front facing camera, oled screen and matte case, for a release in the christmas season, which will be presented by none other than steve jobs.
