Step by step...

I'm pretty sure you are the smartest person I know right now. Thank you for your comments, seriously... I COMPLETELY agree with you and you articulated what I've been telling people for days.

Don't call it a new phone, call it a minor upgrade... it seems like this will be the black sheep once you go back and look at all the iphone generations.
It seems like an incremental strategy.. not too much, not too little...
For example they didn't want a stampede of people from 3G to 3Gs including developers, also allows the platform to remain the status quo..
Perhaps future multi-core cpu's, next gen may be ramped up over the next cycle along with other products in parallel..
The next cycle will probably proove more to be a major...

Do we know whether this 3Gs was generation 2,1 or 3,1?

I suspect there is more to come somehow..

so what happened?

So, we can speculate all day long about 'What happened' and 'What might happen' but, again, we have ZERO clue about what happened. Anything we can even guess at is baseless for the most part. Don't get me wrong, I like to hear creative speculation as much as the next guy, but what are the facts?

Let's take a look:

Can Apple produce a phone that does video chat?
Undoubtedly. In fact the first generation iPhone was VERY capable of taking video at 17-23 fps.

Can Apple produce a phone that utilizes 4g?
Undoubtedly

Could Apple have put this all on the FIRST iPhone?
Undoubtedly

If you ask me (Which no one is, which makes me a HUGE hypocrite), the iPhone 3G S's development was COMPLETELY bottlenecked by this little company we like to call AT&T.

Every time Apple comes up with something cool they have to say 'Hey AT&T, you guys ready for this or are you still sitting around with your thumbs up your asses?"

While I'm HIGHLY disappointed in the development of the iPhone 3G S, I got the sense that Apple was JUST as disappointed. Could you read it on their faces?

absolutely agree, see my post about AT&T not being ready for what Apple has to offer. Just wish they didnt call it an new generation of phone... it is JUST an upgrade, so why market it as the new generation. Doesn't matter if its 2,1 or 3,1... it's how they talk about it. This IS there 'lates and greatest' and is promoted like the NEXT generation... ie... a new name.

Don't know if you guys remember but about 2-3 months ago there were reports of Apple purchacing a whole load of 3mp Camera lenses and 5mp camera lenses. Well the 3mp's have clearly been used but whats happening with the fives?

Onward...

Do you think that the black besel that was listed on the Chinaontrade web site recently was the real deal?
Maybe it is actually for iPod Touch 64gb...they just didn't know it yet...or maybe just trade spin..

Yes AT&T have been pretty lame about providing services.... perhaps also the negotiations 'leak' or 'spin' was meant to prompt AT&T into getting their acto together...maybe too late now... AKA - Apple and Verizon in iPhone Negotiations for 2010?
Here in Aus we already have those services up and running with all carriers... tethering, MMS.

I think Jobsy has yet to show his whole hand on this matter though...

after working China for 3 years, that could have been ANYTHING. Anything for PR sake... That being said, I have NO way of knowing what that was... shoot... that could have been the bezel for a cd playing in a new Lia Bao SUV in China for all I know. All I know is that AT&T NEEDS to get replaced and I'm hoping some nice competition will get their acts together.

My guess for the leaked pic:

Maybe it truly is from Apple and was "supposed" to be leaked - the new iPhone has seen major _interior_ updates, so maybe they just wanted to see how people would react on that matte/rubber case for the next overhauled iPhone?

Yes the keynote did give that slight tinge of not-so-fantastic... and having to say that once AT&T get these services up and running would have been a big dissappointment for the board in having to skirt around the topic during the keynote... artfully dodging...

They will see the sentiment in the market and be clipping AT&T's heals no doubt.

Matte case ordered...

Hi there,

Last monday we ordered some of those MATTE cases for the iPhone 3GS with our Chinese supplier. We were told these cases will NOT fit the iPhone 3G, but are only meant as replacement cases for the 'soon to be released' iPhone 3rd generation.

We'll let you know as soon as they're in.

Look mate, it's Apple that make it. AT&T only supplied the network. If Apple wanted to put all those things in they would.

How about a 13" MacBook Pro with FW800 and an SD card reader?? Now there are hundreds of people sitting there with MacBooks saying "mine doesn't say Pro" and getting really upset.

AT&T are responsible only for network obligations. Apple thinks that they needed someone to break into the cell phone market, but the iPhone has been a huge success. Once they're free... we'll see what they do.

Highest bidder wins.

Exactly.
The other thing to remember is that the iPhone is also available in other countries, not just the US. That means different telecommunication companies...

hmm interesting,
just what i said like an hour ago.
keep me updated, message me :D

i doubt its possible but i just to see how this is gonna work xD

I think the iphones look exactly the same because of AT&T... I think AT&T screwed them over so they decided to just release something that would still be interesting but nothing too dramatic because A: they didn't want to loose momentum of sales B: they didn't want to loose any iphone users to the pre C: they didn't want to drive a ton of new people to AT&T.... so they had to walk a fine line. my guess is that as soon as the contract with AT&T is up they will drop them like a bad habit and release a new iphone with video chat, with 4G, with background apps and other craziness...hopefully they will make it super easy for people to switch to another carrier.

stupid at&t

P.S. I DONT think it was rushed I think it was on purpose...because they had an iPhone TV ad and everything already made for this phone. I think they decided it was easier to keep making the same cases for the time being and wait for the contract to expire.

I Must Find This Case

I have been following this rumor for a while now, and you are all missing something: The earpiece is mounted way higher on this phone, with what appears to be a small forward-facing camera below it. See the picture and zoomed in picture below to see what I am talking about.

The names of the image files (154413-chinac_425, for instance) include the word "chinac" - I don't see it unreasonable to interpret this as an image file sent from a manufacturer in China.

It is likely that this is an authentic case (the fact that its serial numbers correlate to numbers released only recently also support this theory).

PLEASE PM or e-mail me if there are any updates about this:

NOTE: This also makes sense, because although on the outside, the 3GS appears identical to the 3G, the internals are different, and by examining the picture below of the INSIDE of the back of the phone (also from the series of matte photos released) there are etchings to accommodate the different hardware housed inside of the phone. The 3GS likely has a different hardware configuration on the inside, meaning this case might not fit on the 3G.

Notice how they didn't even demo the iphone or hold up one to show the audience during the keynote. They weren't very excited about it....something's up.

Or, more likely, given the way the Apple logo and text were applied to the iPhone 3G, this is the case, but lacking the clear coat.
Agree, this image is probably the raw substrate of the case, which has been printed on and is yet to receive its clear polymer (or whatever it is) coating. If you look at the back of your iPhone you will see that the printing is underneath the clear coat.

As there have been some indications in this thread that the 3GS might not be the full story, i'd like to pour some fuel into the fire:

Wasn't there an Apple media event scheduled for the end of June? Coincidentally Mr Jobs is said to officially return towards end of June and it would fit the picture to have _him_ announcing the "real thing" (i.e. iPhone Pro or whatever it may be called).

People may now claim that Apple is trying to move away from Steve Jobs being the public anchorman and that this would make the speculation above improbable. Well - the assumption of Apple moving away from SJ as identification figure is pure speculation as well (or did i miss some official statement of Apple on that?) and so i consider the above a feasible speculation :)
