Even though lots of people are using their Mini as a HTPC, Apple doesn't make any attempt to push this feature. Apple want you to buy a Mac and the :apple:TV for your home theatre set up.

I just don't see Apple making improvements to the Mini which will move it into :apple:TV territory.

:apple:TV is already far behind from competition. If Apple doesn't intend to improve this product in the near future, then features like HDMI and Bluray disk drive, are significant factors for the Mini if Apple wants to gain some share in the HTPC market.

If the design allows me to put in at least 4Gb RAM, has at least the nVidia chip used in the Macbooks and allows you to hook up 2 displays (non-mirrored) then I'm pretty much sold. And a decent enough Core 2 chip...

Not too worried about internal storage drive issues as I would use firewire and NAS drives for anything other than program files etc. Yes Apple, please keep firewire in the Mini as it is really, really useful. And please put it back into the next Macbook too!

Don't care about what the thing looks like either, really. I'm just excited about being able to hook up 2 monitors of my choice to anything other than a Mac Pro at last!

Mac mini and a display?

Do apple really expect anyone to buy a mac mini and the 24" display?

mac mini top spec: 2ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb £629

24" LED Display : £635
Total: £1264

Or you could buy: 2.8Ghz, 2gb ram, 320gb 24" Imac Total £1125

I know you don't get LED backlit, but the kind of person who buys a mac mini would not notice that much.

So i dont see why the mac mini should not come with a much more powefull prosssesor (i.e. 2.8 Ghz), or just merge the 2 products together into a headless mac, like the idea thats been circulating for ages.

A Headless mac could sport a wide range of prossesors, from 2.66 Core 2 up to a 2.8 or something quad core?

Makes more sense to me?

Oh and make the displays a less redicolous price..

This should get a bunch of people very excited.

looks like it might be the first "new" mac I plan on buying. My past 2 were used.

I was thinking of getting a used Mac Mini off eBay and building it up to these specs:-

Mac Mini £200
2Gb Crucial RAM £24 667Mhz
Leopard £89
2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo £80

That would have no super drive, limited to 2Gb RAM, only 1 monitor output and might be fiddly to put together.

Now if the following specs are the entry level:

Mac Mini £372
2Ghz
Superdrive
2Gb RAM 1066Mhz (upgradable to 4Gb at time of purchase for £50 at MOST)
Dual display support
160Gb HD (7,200 rpm option?)

I think with the extra performance of the GPU, Snow Leopard and the faster system bus, this system would be perfect for me as an entry level Intel switcher system.

Now if Newertech would just bring out a Firewire "Universal Drive Adapter" with the Oxford chip set, I can use any one of the 7,200rpm drives I already have as recording volume, saving a fortune on an external case and then it's just the Pro Tools LE 8.0 upgrade I'd need after that.

It's looks the same as the old one. I'd prefer ditching the DVD drive, slimming it down and using a 3.5" HD.

Superdrive
2Gb RAM 1066Mhz (upgradable to 4Gb at time of purchase for £50 at MOST)

That might be close to the specs for the next mini, but it won't be that cheap.

The pound has dropped 25% in value compared to the dollar since the last mini came out. If anything, expect the price to increase when the new models are announced.

I would have to disagree with only having 2.0GHz.

The cheapest model of the current iMac has a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and they are getting ready to upgrade it. The current Mac Mini has a 2.0GHz processor. Why would Apple use the same processor speed after this long period of time that the Mac Mini hasn't been upgraded.

The amount of Memory though is perfect. And I'm glad to see that it will probably have DDR3 instead of DDR2.

2GB is not perfect.....4GB (or capability to go to 6GB like currrent iMacs) would be perfect :)

When???

Roll on Tuesday the ??th of ???

At least this stokes the Mac Mini fires, which helps keep its profile up in Apple's eyes.

No FW 400? No HDMI?

I love that it comes with Firewire 800, while the MacBook is stuck only with USB. Apparently, Apple has designated the MacMini a 'professionals' device but not the MacBook. Meanwhile, even some cah-cah netbooks come with hig-speed eSATA sockets.

Also, why on God's green earth would you need 5 USB sockets on the MacMini?!! Let's see: 1) printer; 2) iPod/iPhone dock; 3) possible wired keyboard (though if the MacMini is supposed to be minimalist, do you really want a wired keyboard?); 4) possible wired mouse (see 3); and 5) scanner (and that's only if your printer is not multifunction). Besides, in these days of 'living in the cloud,' shouldn't many of these peripherals (i.e. printer, NAS, etc) be on our wireless networks?

This has to be a joke, right? Whoever is responsible should be Steved ASAP.

Let's see....printer, wireless keyboard (but USB dongle), wireless mouse (but USB dongle), ipod dock, external hard driver (with two more USB ports), scanner, Elgato USB TV tuner, USB flash drive(s), USB scale (from a great deal at Radio Shack years back to weigh my ebay shipments), digital camera, Logitech Harmony remote, Garmin GPS unit, webcam to name a few.

I was thinking about it last night. I don't know if the pic is true or not, but why would someone make a fake mockup after 500+ days since last refresh of this product.

I hope its real. Like most of us I want to put this in my living room.

I also don't care about the looks, whites not that bad for a desktop b/c you don' touch it that often like a macbook. Plus it would match my Wii.:D

$550 is a fair price for any mac.

$550
-$169 Mac OS X & iLife 09
