You said that they only had a Blu-ray player. Problem solved.

I'm truncating my argument to fit your situation and you're abandoning the situation. This makes it difficult for me to keep up. :p

Ok you solved half of my problem, for a 30min movie you can use dual layer DVD. But as I said many times you want to burn movies you have on your computer that last more than 1 hour (actually most of the times).

And what about if you want to play, let’s say your recent honeymoon video you have edited on your Mac, at a friend’s place where no PC or Mac exists but only a Blu-ray player? I don’t think that everybody uses computers for watching movies in the living room.

In those situations, I whip out my iPhone and plug it into their TV with the AV cable...even friends with Blu-ray players are impressed, and the video quality - while obviously not 1080p - is more than good enough given the portability.

Everyone has different expectations, but for me I have zero need for portable media above and beyond what I can take with me on my iPhone - the quality I expect in my living room from the Apple TV, and the quality I expect when taking content with me tend to be different, and in an absolute pinch I can always burn a DVD

It's all about the question: Do you want to move to the HD world or not? If yes then you need a mean like Blu-ray. If not, DVDs, ipods etc. are just fine to move around your videos.

First of all, you do NOT need Blu-Ray for HD movies. Blu-Ray is just a plastic disc that holds files. These files can also be on a hard drive, streamed from a network, etc.

Second, let's get back to the Mac mini topic please? Just because some people use a Mac mini as a living room media center doesn't mean the other 95% of Mac mini users want a stupid HDMI port in the back.

exactly!!! thats why people invented DVI-HDMI ports, or MiniDisplay->something->HDMI. i dont like HDMI.

Ok but don’t forget that the Mini is not a single desktop computer as it is not also a dedicated media center. It is a mobile desktop. You can move it around often from your home desk to your office or to your living room or to other places. When I connect it to my big flat screen in my living room I use DVI to HDMI convertor + an optical cable for the sound. It is not that there is no other solution, but if it had an HDMI output port this will make things easyer in such a cases and I don’t think it is such a big cost for Apple to add this port.

fair enough, but what percentage of users are doing what you are doing? i think the number would be somewhere around 10% (for mini only). most other users use a computer monitor, i.e. VGA/DVI. thus why DVI is the best option IMO.

p.s. i also want a mini for a media server directly plugged into the TV (just waiting for the update) but i still dont think HDMI = the best option.

I am not sure if only 10% of the Mini users connect their Mini to their big flat screen, even if not constantly at least form time to time, but I can tell you for sure that if there was this HDMI output port, this percentage would be increased significantly. I am not speaking about replacing DVI port with HDMI, I say to add one more additional output port.

I am not saying that HDMI port is indispensable but for sure it is not a bad idea considering its low cost and easy implementation.

i think the number would be around 10%, its just like saying how many MBP/MB users would actually utilise the full 4GB of RAM (out of those people that configured their machine with 4gb of course).

i see your point, HDMI would be a lot more of an attractive to potential buyers.

my biggest problem with the photo is that it looks like the back is white plastic and I don't buy that. Apple is pushing the whole all aluminum for better recycling hard. I see ads every day about the ecofriendlyness of the mac I just can't see them releasing a mac mini that isn't all aluminum, same for the time capsule, airport extreme and apple tv (unless they had to go with plastic for mechanical reason

My biggest problem with the picture is that I tried to plug a monitor, keyboard, and mouse into it, but it still would not function as a computer.

This means that since the picture wouldn't work, I am in the position of waiting until the new Mini comes out and appears in stores for sale. Which could be forever from now.

Looks like those of you who confirmed the picture and video was fake owes the forum member an apology. Be a man or woman and say "I'm sorry". :D
I don't have to because I believed the picture was real. :)

LOL..

Being a member here for many-a-year, I have seen so many "fake vs. real" shootouts.
And as always many Photoshop-experts claim fakes... In all these years I have seen very believable stuff turn out to be fake (and vice versa), but lately the "leaked" pics and movies are more real than fake.

Must admit some do acknowledge their mistake, but most stay awfully quite.

My motto is: if you're not sure don't categorically state "FAKE". I like the discussions, but usually these threads turn into a war...

Trust me, with next "leaked" pic, there will be battle of the unknown again... and probably loose some members after their shame become unbearable :D

Yes, we are obliged to say I'm sorry because someone somewhere on a forum showed up with a picture, and no other reason to beleive it was real.

I take it you were the kid that always stuck it in others faces when you scored a point higher on a test too?

So much for the photoshop experts, those who thought 5 usb was impossible, those who thought 2 display ports was impossible, and the alignment of the ports was wrong.

For me, the interesting facet of these photos is not to scrutinize them at 400% and look for incorrect shadows, or demand better quality photos (which is realistically asking a lot, since probably most of these shots are done surrepticiously without time to arrange good lighting and grab your Canon 5D from the car.)

The interesting thing is to consider whether the proposed product really makes sense- could it really be a plausible new Apple product- and try to deduce from that what might or might not really be introduced.

ROTFL. I knew those alleged "PhotoShop experts" would end up eating crow...... don't hear much out of those "experts" today, do we?

Hey, we expected faster processors, more RAM, and a bigger hard drive.

We weren't pessimistic enough. That's what this amounts to. So what that we didn't account for Mini DVI? The real hardware is worse than we had imagined.

Here here.

Today's Mac Mini refresh blunder has inspired me to put together a Hackint0sh HTPC together, in an HTPC case, for less than the Mini if possible, but certainly more powerful & feature-complete. I already have a power supply left over from an old build so that's one component I won't be needing.

I'd like to see your parts list when you get it. I've scoured for Mini-similar components and haven't found them. The closest was the new nVidia 9400 board, but it is not hackintosh-friendly.

What PS is that?

so anything that isn't exactly how YOU want it, for what YOU want to do with it, even though you and your goals are a total 180 from the market clearly designated for the item in question, is some kind of epic fail.

Not... really a one eighty.

The Mac Mini is well suited to being a home theater PC, save for a few omissions.

Being an HTPC is only about a 40 degree angle away from the intended market.

Apple won't make the Mac Mini into an HTPC because they want people to buy the Apple TV, and people will, as soon as we get an Atom/Ion combo in there for 1080p support.

but the goal if the mac mini is NOT to be a HTPC. As you pointed out, they have the apple tv. so they are not going to upgrade the mac mini to be worthy as an HTPC, which is what YOU (and pretty much everyone else on this thread) wants them to do. so when they don't, you call the mac mini a disappointed, a failure etc.

You wouldn't judge the Watchmen movie as a romantic comedy or a thriller because that's not what it is. It's an adaption of a comic book and a dark film noir style comic set in an alt universe for the time it was written (the 1980s).
So stop trying to judge the Mac Mini or any of any company's systems by what you want and look at what they are trying to do with it.

The Mac Mini is and has always been the machine for those that don't need a lot of kick or upgradability. The people, typically PC switchers, that have all the other bits and just need the computer part without having to spend the money to buy all the rest.

So did they achieve that goal. did they create a well spec'd 'beginner/light user' mac that is also cost effective for the parts that are included. etc.

if they don't achieve that, then yes it is an epic fail. anything else is just folks like you trying to make a cat bark
