I would be interested to see this in person and test it out though I would not be the beta tester and buy one right away. If the rumored starting is the actual price, I don't want or need one that much to spend that kind of money for it.

You're right. If it was Apple the first to come out with this, we would see comments like "Apple leads in innovation", "just take my money", "can't wait", (feel free to add phrases), etc.

Yes you might see those types of comment after the product is demoed.

After the keynote later check other tech comment forums and see what the general consensus is then.

This looks neat! Although if it folds inwards this would mean you would always have to unfold it to use it, which imo isn't as useful. Still, it's an amazing step forward.

Comments are salty as hell. I can't even imagine how loved would be Apple for doing this. It's a breakthrough tech and it's just sad some of you can't accept that.
You're on an Apple forum, are you really surprised? If you went to a Samsung/Sony/Microsoft forum you would see the same sort of behaviour.

It's a breakthrough tech
foldable phones are no doubt the future
IMHO the future is AR (glasses), not mechanically stressed screens.

How about both? Meaning a foldable phone that has a display on the outside as well.
So a full screen outside and an even bigger screen on the inside - good for manufacturers, bad for device cost.

Call me a skeptic, but a stressed fold is a weakness in any application and I just see broken / worn-out phones in no time. [...]
I'll definitely keep my eye on this, but I'll stick to rigid displays until I have real-world proof these things can last!
QFT!

How durable will be internal components that cross the fold be?
Especially as - if it's one screen that gets actually folded and not two separate screens that align in opened state - the pixels are so small and fragile that I can't imagine how they would survive continuous mechanical stress from folding mid- to long-term.
Laptops are hinged, but they're opened and closed far less often than a phone over the course of a day.
And laptops don't fold across the display.

As I said above, I see AR glasses as a more viable solution for big (virtual) "screens" with small physical device footprint. I will closely follow the presentation and reviews of Samsungs solution, but also keep an eye on longer-term experiences. Perhaps Samsung can convince me of the robustness of their folding screen tech, but for now colour me sceptical.

Depends. Many times it seems like Samsung is just hastily throwing it on the market because they know apple or someone else is working on something comparable.
Samsung have been working on curved displays for many years. They showed off their first curved display in 2013 and you can bet they have been working on it for years before that. Samsung have been working on this for years long before Apple. However let’s just say they are only releasing their foldable phone now to beat Apple to the punch ;)

I think, it's time for a dumb phone
The article discusses one at length. :p

This seems like a classic example of ability over practicality - it exists because they wanted to make one, but doesn’t seem to serve any practical or functional reason. Phones fit the hand. Want something bigger, use a tablet.

Oh well, time will tell...
My father calls that “a solution without a problem.”

I have read many articles here at MR of rumored new Apple products and the quotes I wrote is where I got it from. Those quotes are said before, not after, the actual new product coming out. I take more note from actual users who have used a product longer which come from their experience. Some comments are objective and subjective so I just have to filter them out. Whether you or anyone else like or don't like Samsung, at least look to see what folding display can offer or capable of doing. It will cost nothing, just your time, so either it's for you or it's not.

I think you forget where you are, the comments for an Apple folding phone would be scathing and would include but would not be limited to: there's no dark mode, Steve would have never let this happen, Tim Cook needs to go, a plastic screen, scratch gate, foldgate... etc

Time will tell.

I have no dog in this fight, I don't need Samsung to "win", I don't need Apple to "win". Some posters here really do seem to need that in their lives.

It is interesting tech. Period.

Tech evolution also has its version of "survival of the fittest".

If Apple takes this up a year or so from now and make it work — great!
If Samsung manage to make this work — great!

Does it have a future? Let's wait and see.

But don't just dismiss things out of hand because it is not branded Apple, Inc.

This is the best comment I've read so far and I don't think there will be others that will be close. You are fair, open-minded and unbiased. Thank you.

This tech is cool, and probably the future of smartphones. These first ones probably won’t be super great, but future ones will be. I’m really not sure how anyone can judge this particular phone either way having not seen it demoed or used yet. I don’t think it’s particularly fair to judge it as “useless” just because it doesn’t run iOS. I also don’t think it’s fair to blast Apple for not releasing one yet. I imagine Apple is just doing what it always does and waiting to make sure they can get it right if there proves to be a market for these.

My whole problem with this thing is the brand. I have had three Samsung kitchen appliances and one Samsung TV break before they were even 5 years old. And I mean BREAK. To the point where they weren’t worth the cost of fixing and weren’t under warranty anymore. My son has a Samsung tablet that makes a strange, unexplained hissing noise 24 hrs a day. So yeah, I don’t trust this phone not to eventually break. I think Samsung is a very unreliable brand. So when I say I’ll wait for Apple or another more reliable brand to do one, that’s why.

This would be incredible for those who love to read books and carry a minimal amount with them especially when traveling. If Apple made one Id be down assuming they did it right and keep it thin/light without sacrificing battery life.

If it was a phone the size of an SE I could do basic phone stuff on then open up to something the size of a XS Max then I’d be interested.

I dont understand how the screen can withhold all the bending at the same place over and over again. Must stress a lot on the screen where it folds.

personally i dont see the use for this, seems clumsy.

Thought that notch (or whatever it is) looked familiar. The clues appear to have been there in the 5G prototype

Yes, yes, yes. +3 internets for you.

Awesome concept! Something different about it. Let's be honest, nobody gives a damn about 10% faster CPU, 20% powerfull GPU, a bit better camera and 5% better battery life, that's why sales of the smartphones starts to stagnate. There is a huge need for a new technology, for a inovative gadgets.

That is what a sheep would do. It’s a free world, we can hold companies to account when the sell phones (Note 5) that are a fire hazard and won’t admit wrongdoing. They could have killed people. The same (insane) execs are in charge now. Never forget their customers were treated like this. If Apple did this I’d blacken their name too. You don’t treat your customers like this and expect no retaliation.

Who’s being the glitch, sorry, the sheep here

Interestingly enough, while many may disagree, I don’t feel that I have a great need for gadgetry. Personally, I’m a bigger fan of pragmatics and embrace better camera and battery. Each to his own though.

For the average consumer, there is a not an allure for incremental improvements every single year, the only real major change with the iPhone aside from the factor, was Face ID. But in terms of offering something entirely different, this is the type of change that I think the smart phone industry needs. It Doesn’t necessarily have to be from Samsung, Apple, LG etc., it’s just the fact that we’re seeing something different that has the potential to bring change.

I remember years back, when the smart watch for Apple was discussed before it even launched, it was heavily chastised that it would ‘fail and flop’, now, it’s one of the best selling smart watches in the world, where it’s starting to gravitate towards health features like EKG, fall detection, etc. Point being, a foldable display doesn’t register with others imaginations, because they don’t have experience with it. It’s OK to be skeptical of something, and some don’t like change, but being that this seems like something that will be a reality in the future, this _could_ change everything

Cool concept, but I’d be worried about how this functions as a pocketable phone. The tablet side is the easy part, but unfortunately Android doesn’t have any tablet software. Seems like a mediocre version of both slapped together. I’m interested to see the software hands on, but I’m sure it’ll take a few years before such a concept makes sense from a hardware and software perspective. I don’t think I’d ever be in the market for such a device.

When Apple is first to market some new technology, they are innovative and everyone is copying them. If Apple waits to release larger phones, usb c, oled screens, etc, they are sagacious and they “do it right”.

But seriously, competition is good for the consumer. If Samsung makes a great foldable phone, it only means that the Apple version will have to be better.
