This is sad if true, as kills off all wired headphones, dongles, etc that we have? What about fast charging?

Are they going to make you buy airpods or create some weird magnetic headphone dongle?

Just seems like a bad idea getting rid of the port.

I see the appeal of it for charging, but these other issues are big i think.
If they don't get out of the stone age with their 7.5W wireless and don't add somewhat of range to wireless charging by then, there is no way I am buying a portless iPhone. Plus they need to add more wireless charging stations publicly, and what about CarPlay?

I can't imagine Apple going portless on any device after abandoning their own wireless charging mat.

Plugging your phone into a high-speed charger for ~30Min is so much more convenient than wireless.
The only reason why people might speculate they'd go wireless is to save component space but the devices have been getting bigger on average so it seems like a moot point.

I use wireless charging extensively with my iPhone 8 and it’s been transformative. To the extent that it annoys me that my iPad doesn’t have wireless charging. the ability to have it trickle charge whenever I drop it on the stand just makes it so easy. BUT, I’ve also had many times in the past when I’ve gone out for long afternoons of playing Ingress or Pokémon Go, which eat batteries. The solution that everyone uses is to carry an external battery and a cable, to keep the phone running long after theninternalmbatterynwould have run out.

If Apple removes the ability to charge from an external battery using a cable, it’s going to be massively annoying, and may effectively kill some uses of the phone. If it becomes a matter of charging through a magnetically attached cable connected to the Smart Connector, that might suffice, but nobody who needs to use the phone for longer than the internal battery can last, is going to put up with holding a Qi charging pad against the phone while they’re walking around.

Again, I love wireless charging - when I’m home or at work. Where I can have the (comparatively slow and inefficient) charging pads sitting around and plugged in, and habitually drop my phone on them to trickle charge. But wireless charging with a pad constantly held against the back of the phone (and losing power from the external battery in the transfer process) won’t work while walking around with a battery pack in one’s pocket.

That’s exactly what’s going to change, they’ll enforce USB-C connector on all devices.

If you have some time to spare, I’m sure you’ll find The Verge retracting from the same statements you’re making.

No my statement is correct as is . Right now there is NO directive and therefore NO LAW requiring USB, just a trade agreement.

Now yes its true the EU has a consultation that ”may” move to a directive but that then needs parliamentary approvals and ratification in the 27 . And even then technical specifications would not preclude use of adaptors or indeed other power transfer solutions

I think iPhone needs a massive leap in battery performance before going totally wireless. As long as people need to top up during the day, they’re going to need the ubiquity, portability, and low-cost of wired charging.

Terrible news for the iPhone! No ports in 2021! I guess I have to buy the 2020 iPhone 12 Pro if it is release in a 5.4” size!

Apple should just have additional model with lightning included and charge the buyer an additional $200 for the option. $500 more for a USB-3 port. Apple smart connector for $700 more. Not all cars have wireless charging pads built-in to them but have usb connectors! I go for a lightning port iPhone 13 for $200 more then a port less model anytime! Power users will gladly pay additional $500.00 more for an usb-c port too! To Apple fanboys, $700 more for smart connector iPhone 13!

I'm going to disagree with this rumor. Last year, the USB consortium (of which Apple is a member) agreed upon a standard to allow manufacturers to produce USB-C ports that are restricted to certain types of cables. A DRM of sorts.

This is one reason why Apple hasn't added USB-C to their iPhones yet... because they couldn't control/license the connection. With that change to the standard, they can now do that.

I expect the iPhone 12 to replace the lightning port with USB-C.

Wireless ?! drop it on the Qi pad and it magically charges

How do drop it on a Qi pad when you are asleep? At least with a cable you can plug it in before you fall asleep.

Smartconnector still can charger device (unless they will change something) so just another cables and another reason to buy them.

It’s useless if it can disconnect falling from 3 feet or less.

Not going to read 10 pages. People use the port to plug in countless accessories for musical instruments, photography, etcetera. How do people use battery extenders anymore?

Function = form.

Please remember that, Apple.

Unless Apple develops a way to make wireless charging just as fast as wired, this is a ridiculous design choice. I’m not buying it.
Plus they need to add some range and public accessibility and a reliable CarPlay adaptor.

Smart Port will only be an addition unless that holds strong enough to keep the cable attached when using the phone.
I don't think Apple will go fully portless for one very simple reason: A wireless charging only device can't be used properly when charging. The usability score of the device would drop near zero...

I don't know why a complete wireless format is what, if true, Apple is aiming for. I think a port is necessary for charging and wireless charging is not practical nor convenient outside of a home. None of my vehicles have wireless and to force users to purchase wireless charger is added expense that I don't need to spend and same goes for battery packs. I still connect to my desktop to load my music and other things as well. There is no reason to do away with this port.

They haven’t abandoned it, it’s still being worked on.

In apple’s eyes they expect everybody to already have a wireless charger by now.

It already exists. Just because it’s not on the iPhone it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist or the world is waiting for Apple to do it.
Doesn't matter if it exists if it isn't for iPhone. And we have been waiting almost three years for them to even move past 7.5W when other have had at least double for years.

I'm not opposed to portless iPhones, but what does this mean for Carplay? I just bought a car last year that has wired carplay, and I'd hope there will be a 1st party solution if Apple chooses to remove the ports on their iPhones.

All the main leakers have said no way it’s happening.

Exactly. I wonder how many phones previously saved by the lightning cord will be broken now.

I wonder what their plans are for the vast majority of CarPlay-enabled vehicles that don’t support wireless CarPlay.

The only positive that I can see coming from this is that we finally get a first-party USB-to-wireless adapter for CarPlay vehicles.

Yes please. I would love an Apple Carplay dongle. The 3rd party solutions are good, but lack a certain polish for me.

Apple went to USB-C on their 2015 MacBooks and then the iPad Pros. They should have gone to USB-C on the iPhone X in 2017. What a shame.

It will be refined by the time the iPhone goes portless and be more efficient as well as fast.
No you're not cheating physics. Every time you're converting energy to another form you will generate heat. Making room temp superconductors would be a good way to reduce heat with wireless charging, but we know we won't be having that anytime soon.

Looks like you couldn’t even manage to read the first few paragraphs of the article either, which clearly suggests replacing the port with a smart connector.

Very interesting move...

I prefer the Lightning headphones for listening to music so I guess I'm going to have to use my AirPods all the time once Apple discontinues the ports...

I wonder if they will continue to make Smart Battery cases
The Smart Battery cases charge through lightning, but maybe they could make wireless. But hopefully they can fix the efficiency by then. I had a wireless charging Mophie that was horrible. The full power of the case would only charge my iPhone like 30%.

I'm sure they will make a rather expensive first-party USB-to-wireless adapter for CarPlay for that :)
