One advantage to lightening is Apple doesn't have to worry about whether a user has a charge cable, charge plus data, etc. USB C. If a cable is Apple certified, it works.
Not necessarily though.. I've had certified 3rd party cables fail or not always work properly. So I usually only use Apple cables now. It can depend on the quality of the chip.
USB-C doesn't require a chip on the cable = less issues

Like there's "newish" Lightning adaptors etc for audio and stuff that people would have spent extra on...
Just another Tim Cook money grab probably to up sell a wireless pad
I will be the same with smart connector which can send data and if they don't make any changes charge device. Another cables to buy to your home car etc.

Does that include the iPad Pro 30W charging via USB-C or the 96W charging via USB-C for the MBP?
I’m talking about for a phone. However there are phones that can charger faster than 30W with wireless charging such as the Huawei P40 pro.

Ummm, don't be so sure. Apple has a very strong bias towards form over function. A phone with no ports will certainly look lovely. Practical? Not so much.
Probably anytime soon like notebook for Pros only with USB-C.....oh wait ;)

Forcing only wireless charging is an environmental crime.

The energy losses over millions of Phones will be massive.
This is a huge point.

Add in another environmental disaster is that it will cause more batteries in the landfills. Wireless charging degrades the battery faster (uneven charging rates, high heat), so they will be replaced and discarded sooner.

Definitely not the same as using your device freely, charging with a cable...

Didn't say that it was and I mentioned that I still charge with a wired cable sometimes.

That's still a much worse solution than just having a longer charging cable and being able to use your phone exactly as you would if it weren't plugged in.

If I was playing a game I'd definitely want the long cable method. If I'm working and my phone is charing on my desk I can still answer text, email, etc while the phone is charging wirelessly on my stand.

This falls right in line with the 'not gonna have EarPods in the box' rumor for the upcoming iPhones. Apple has to get you use to not getting any headphones this year, so you don't expect AirPods in the box next year when there is no lightning port.

For me that would be okay, as I don't use them. I either throw them in a junk drawer or just leave them in the iPhone box. I can't speak to how many other people are that way, but if there are many, then that is an environmental waste.

Many of the benefits of USB-C over lighting have been stated over and over again (such as faster charge speeds and faster data transfer rates), and I agree with most of them. However, I believe the reason for Apple continuing to stick with lightning is likely because Apple ultimately believes in a wireless future. They flat out stated as such during one of their keynotes even (can't recall which one offhand).

One thing that’s missed on the Lightning Vs USB-C discussion is video out and USB data at the same time. Lightning can’t handle it because it doesn’t have video out lanes, it uses the data lanes to transport the Airplay feed to the adapter, then it converts the signal to HDMI. So, you can’t use USB because it’s busy transporting the video file from the device.

The iPad Pro already features the HDMI signal over USB-C. You may ask, why would you need that on the iPhone?

I’d say, I need that for video monitoring and recording, I need that to edit in LumaFusion with mouse on an external monitor if it’s the only thing that I have access to.

And that would be revolutionary for an entry level iPad, if the next update makes an advance in the external display field.

Wireless charging is poorly energy-efficient. It will raise energy consumption unnecessarily. I look forward to the technology to improve, but with the climate crisis, perhaps not the best idea at the moment.

Port-less is not coming anytime soon. Wireless charging might be the most useless technology of recent times.

Truly wireless charging doesn't exist, but if you are saying "inductive charging is useless" - you are wrong. Inductive charging is great. Sticking cables into small ports sucks - I will never go back to that.

Not interested in wireless charging, personally; too inefficient of an exchange. With a typical loss of 10-15% over wired, how happy would you be if everything electrical in your house suddenly lost that much more just getting the energy from the wall to the device? To rephrase, how happy would you be if your electric bill went up 8-10% per month just because you didn’t feel like plugging anything in? In a world where the goal has been to maximize the efficiency of energy use, this seems out of place at best.

Everything in your house is not a mobile device that you carry around with you outside.

We are talking a phone here, not your refrigerator or central AC...

Didn't used to care quite as much, but now with a USB-C iPad Pro and a new 2020 13" MBP I wish they would move to USB-C for the iPhone. Sucked to have to carry around Lightning (iPhone), an Apple Watch charging cable, MagSafe (before I got the new MBP) and USB-C charger cable whenever I travel. So now down to 3, would like to get down to 2!

On the future iPhone 13 how would I do wireless charging while flying on an airplane? I would still like a charging port even with the wireless charging feature.

This would end my iPhone relationship, as a die hard Apple user, unless there is an in the box and free way to integrate with CarPlay with both of my existing cars that I plan to keep for the next 10-15 years.

I am still a little concerned about the iPhone possibly going totally port less next year. As a world traveller, i like the convenience & universality of the simple & small lightning & usb charger while traveling. If anything, I wish Apple would give all their iOS devices usb-c charging ports. Then i could use the same charger for my ipad pro & iphone.

In theory a port-less design seems simpler. But then you have to bring a flat wireless charger...which you have to plug in the wall anyway. The ones I’ve seen are not as portable as a regular wired one either. Plus i’d still have to bring a regular charger for my ipad while traveling.

I get that Apple is an innovator. A pusher of new technology. And i do appreciate that. I usually welcome change. But this seems like it could be a pain. Perhaps down the road airports and coffee shops around the world will all have charging pads everywhere. But we don’t live in that world now...and won’t be for awhile. I just see this as being annoying for someone who travels a lot.
