I'm going to wait for some reviews and some benchmarks. I'm not buying this thing for games if it can't keep up.

tvOS, just like iOS and MacOS fully supports cross-platform engines such as Unity & Unreal, but Apple would have to make a push similar to AppleTV+ in which they lure AAA Studios and secure/finance exclusives to truly get the platform going.
One of the obstacles to AAA games on Apple operating systems is their pricing structure. iOS/iPadOS/tvOS don't support prices in the range of $60-$70 per game, so developers/publishers don't view them as financially worthwhile for ports.

Why do people get these when you can get a perfectly good firetv or Roku for under $50? Plus with the firetv, you can sideload stuff on it.
Because Apple TV is better. I have a Roku in my room but I'm going to get one of these so that I don't have to anymore. Will move my old 4k into there and have the shiny new one in the living room.

Buttons on the remote:
TV volume - check
TV on/off - check
TV input switcher - not yet. Planned for the next update in 5 years.
Don’t most TVs switch input automatically using CEC? I haven’t used the input button or the tv remote in years.

Long story short… back in the days of the Apple TV 1st gen, I ripped my entire media collection. And put it in iTunes on an old Mac mini. The Mac has been upgraded a couple of times (it’s currently a repurposed 2013 MBP w/ external drives. I upgraded to a 4K a few years ago when I upgraded my living room TV. It streams media well to the living room, den, bedrooms. Etc, is simple enough for the non techs in my household to use.

Yes, but if they admitted that then some of these people wouldn't have anything to gripe about.

TV on off could use CEC, I don't think there is any chance to use input switcher since AppleTV itself is a device, the TV itself must choose. If you have CEC enabled HDMI port, when you tun on AppleTV it turn on TV, same for turning off.

The input switch part is needed, Apple could have just added USBC port and allow HDMI hub to be attached and then allows the apple tv to control sources. Bose soundbar always messes up sources

Should I assume these will go on sale tomorrow 5am local just like air tags did? Sure hasn’t updated yet

I think a new Apple Home Theater Gaming product is coming, but I think it’s a mistake to assume it’s going to be an Apple Tv. Less of a Roku, more of a Airplay 3.0 wireless surround sound Receiver merged with a game Console. To make all that work, they’ll need to also relaunch Homepods as Theater-Pods and launch the Sub-Pod which will use the iphone’s built in microphone for easy calibration just like Elac subs but better.
Gaming and wireless sound system doesn’t mix.
people have gone theaters with 9+ speakers surrounding them now. Apple won’t release a Bluetooth audio gaming system. No way they would. They’re wirelwss products work well with people that don’t have home stereos and dedicated systems. If apple was to release a gaming system It would be gaming focused. Nothing to do with sound. Definitely not laggy Bluetooth audio sound either.

User experience. Better app control. Better Integration with HomeKit/airplay. Actually polished apps not generic apps that work decently. Ability to play dolby vision and atmos from streaming. Infuse(much better than plex). I can go on If you’d like.
50$ devices are 50$ devices. They do some things. not too well.

Apple fan through and through, but I absolutely despise the current AppleTV remote. The remote alone drove me to Roku, then the fact that I can get 3 top of the line Roku Ultra during Christmas time for the same price as one AppleTV.

That said, I will be purchasing the new one tomorrow. I hope the remote is leagues and bounds better than the last, otherwise it's going back.

Getting real tired of hearing about Prosser's "predictions".

oh look, except he and about 3 other people have said the same thing today.

you, and people like you, need to learn how to get over yourselves, or find someone new to be violently angry about.

eARC only applies between a TV and a receiver. AppleTV is neither.
Wrong
"So if eARC is a feature to send audio to a device then why would the Apple TV support it? Because this is how Apple will allow users to send audio coming from other set top boxes like a cable box, PS5, or Xbox Series X to their TV via HDMI and then from the TV to the Apple TV via eARC over HDMI and finally from the Apple TV to HomePod. eARC support on the Apple TV allows users to use HomePod, when set up as home theater speakers, for not only audio coming out of their Apple TV but all their home theater audio needs."

With proper HDMI-CEC, the inputs should change as needed, and the Apple TV and TV should share on/off and volume up/down commands, so the input switcher button and TV on/off button aren’t really necessary.

It’s just time for me to upgrade. My HD Apple TV will be 6 years old this autumn. I need a new one. Looking forward to it!

I can airplay anything from my iPhone, iPad or Mac to my Apple TV. I’m subscribed to Apple Arcade and I can play my games on my Apple TV. I can do the apple fitness plus workouts on my Apple TV. It works with Apple Music, it shows my iCloud Photo Library. I can set my HomePod as the audio output for my Apple TV. I’ve bought thousands of TV shows and movies from iTunes and I can watch them seamlessly on my Apple TV.

I’ve always been a fan of the Apple TV. I’ve had one since 2009.

What time do preorders go up tomorrow, UK time?

Just after a remote*. I expect they'll sell 10x more remotes than new ATV4K's, heheh.

*I don't actually hate the current one since putting it in a rubber case(!), but still
It’s 1pm.

I can't believe they have released a product that is almost exactly the same as the previous version. First apple release i would categorise as aweful.

1.Still only 3 Bluetooth connections (no good for zwift or multi Bluetooth apps)

2.Remote does not have an accelerometer so it cant steer like the older remote (although more user-friendly)

3.No air tag support, even though the main use case from the ad is a remote control.

4.No spatial Audio support

5.No Audio out fur using with hifi or DAC's

6.Graphics increase is minimal
