Pill shape makes sense, I have said all along Apple will not use a pinhole design since that is an Android feature (flaw) and Apple needs to retain a unique and iconic look for the iPhone. Everyone knows the notch means it's an iPhone, the pill shape will serve this same function.

But plenty of Android phones have pill shaped cutouts. It houses two RGB lenses, one for UW selfies.

The just changed the display for the iPhone 13. (Albeit very minor)

I personally see Apple running with that display for another 2 years at least.

This. They can put it in the side power button like with the iPad Air
I’ve had the iPad mini 6 for a couple weeks now and have come to despise Touch ID — it’s super awkward to align your finger across the power button, and if it’s a dry skin day or you’re an hour since taking a shower just forget about it.

Don’t really get the outcry to bring Touch ID back to the iPhone. Face ID is fast, reliable, and with an Apple Watch works even when wearing a mask. What more do you want?

That would be a worthy upgrade from my 12 Pro Max. The notch never really bothered me, but to get that much area back on top that would hopefully be used for more icons/symbols would be nice... Oh maybe battery percentage OMG. lol.

Not everyone can/will wear an Apple Watch. Also, authenticating things like bank apps and logins/passwords still require authentication even with a watch.......

And obviously because it seems masks aren’t t going away at least in the US Touch ID as AN OPTION in addition to Face ID would give more flexibility.

Only Pro devices are expected to use the pill shaped cutout. Mainstream iPhone 14 is expected to retain notch. Also makes sense to have dual front cameras for Pro devices.

This feels more likely to me than the hole-punch rumor - Apple can shrink the notch further yet still have a distinctive look.

I'm not too sure if the technology is even out there for the HD camera under the screen display. What about all the other sensors? They are all going to be under the screen too. This reminds me of Series 7 Apple Watch rumor from last year 😂
There are multiple phones with cameras under the screen. Although it solves the problem of notches/hole punches etc the quality of the photos suffer.

Pill shaped front camera design first appeared on Android-based smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S10+, Oppo Reno 3, OnePlus Nord, Huaweim P40... Only difference is if Apple does it, the pill shaped camera will be centered vs being place off to the side.

iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a pill-shaped camera cutout at the top of the display, with the notch removed, according to tweets shared by leaker @dylandkt, who has proven to be a reliable source of Apple-related rumors over the last year or so. To accommodate this change, the leaker said Face ID hardware will be moved under the display.

While it has been widely reported that iPhone 14 Pro models will not have a notch by reputable sources like analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, this is the first time we've heard about the possibility of a pill-shaped camera cutout at the top of the display instead of a circular hole-punch cutout that was originally rumored.

Face ID moving under the display has likewise been rumored previously by display industry consultant Ross Young, who has proven to be a reliable source of display-related information for future Apple products. Last year, for example, Young accurately claimed that the new iPad mini would feature an 8.3-inch display with the home button removed.

Not really, putting it in the center is the innovation here.

Why a pill and not a smaller notch, the same width as this pill?

With the pill, you’ve got wasted pixels above it, making this essentially a tall notch for no reason.
This. Put the front camera, ambient light sensor and proximity sensor in the notch and hide the flood illuminator, dot projector and infrared camera under the display.

Touch ID is also fast and reliable, and with hand lotion works even on dry skin days. ?

I can unlock an iPhone with Touch ID even if it's laying flat on a desk (or bed) that's an arms length away from me. With Face ID, I'd always have to pick up the phone.

Probably because the TrueDepth sensor hardware is above the pill shaped cutout containing the one or two RGB camera(s).

We know Face ID is under the display, which means it’s outside the pill cutout. The display surface on top of Face ID probably has lower resolution, which means it’s still usable for status icons and clock but not great for other elements.
