Probably because the TrueDepth sensor hardware is above the pill shaped cutout containing the one or two RGB camera(s).

We know Face ID is under the display, which means it’s outside the pill cutout. The display area on top of Face ID probably has lower resolution, which means it’s still usable for status icons and clock but not great for other elements.
That would mean the hole punch is VERY deep into the screen. Even more of a nuisance than the current notch.

I wonder why Apple has reengineered the notch on iPhone 13 to make it smaller, to finally get rid of it only a year later. Not complaining at all if it’s true, but I find it strange
They did not reengineered the notch at all. They just move the front speaker to the top edge phone just like what other punch hole phones have done. I think the components in the notch area are still the same. I think they make the notch narrower just for the sake of having some recognizable changes in design. Since that narrower notch doesn’t provide any significance benefit at all. Everything functions the same as before.

This is only for the Pro models, apparently. The regular models will still have the notch.

This is awesome!

I’m glad that the front facing camera is going to be built into the screen and take up less space on this year’s iPhone

That will allow Apple to put more useful information in the status bar on the top of the iPhone

I’m definitely planning on getting the iPhone 14 once it’s released this September
not the camera...but the faceID sensons..like dot projector infrared etc
the camera cannot be under the display with good quality...the hole punch IS for facing camera

This is just like the iPhone X vs 8 again. Pro models get the new design language.

That’s interesting that Apple has a separate sensor specifically for the face ID that’s not included in the front facing camera, I always thought that they were the same thing

Potentially, yes. Some elements of the TrueDepth package might also be above and to the left and right of the pill shaped cutout. I’d expect that upper 1/4” of the display to be lower resolution or different in some way to make the under display TrueDepth sensor work.

If there's going to be a cut-out and it is pill-shaped Apple could make the selfie camera very good.

I don't really get the idea of the punch hole for iPhones. As the black border around the display isn't that thin and is already used for the speaker/mikrophone this could be further advanced in order to get a minimal notch. Just move the damn camera next to the speaker/mikrophone or split the speaker/mikrophone into two and place the camera in the middle.

Don’t you think it’s time for the notch to go away though? It just seems outdated.
No. As I've said before, the notch makes it instantly recognizable as an Apple iPhone. It's like the :apple: logo.

A hole punch or pill shaped front camera design just blends in with the flood of Android smartphones.

Yeah. I'd take a notch over a pill or hole punch. I don't get the hate for the notch. Personally, I have zero problems with it.

The notch limits the number of lenses Apple can put at the top without the notch becoming a thick top bezel.

The pill allows Apple to put more than one RGB camera lens at the top. Cameras have been increasing in number on the back but have remained frozen on the front. A “Pro” device can’t have just one front camera in the future.

so a bezel?

Would think the display would be the easiest to confirm down the road with manufacturing partners being told final design and accessory makers.

While it has been widely reported that iPhone 14 Pro models will not have a notch by reputable sources like analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, this is the first time we've heard about the possibility of a pill-shaped camera cutout at the top of the display instead of a circular hole-punch cutout that was originally rumored.
When the hole punch rumors first surfaced, I don’t recall the actual rumors themselves saying “circular”. I think that was an assumption by those reporting on the rumors (“well that’s how other companies have done it so of course Apple will do it that way”). A ”pill shaped” hole is still a hole, and a round hole would be the worst possible shape if there’s more than one sensor - there would always be wasted space (and thus a needlessly larger hole) around multiple sensors positioned in a circular cutout.

Touch ID power button and remove Face ID components to make room for additional front camera. Done.

Money. Small shaving down on the notch will bring more sales. They would make it smaller to bring on more sales instead of one year just removing it completely. Even if the technology was there to remove it the best idea for apple to do is to make it smaller over time to get people to upgrade for jus a smaller notch.

It wasn't much of a re-engineering. All they did is move the speaker up to top of the phone and then moved the other components closer together.

Move it to the very top of the screen, so it could be a micro notch. Seriously. It would be less distracting than 5 mm down.
